A Cozy Sapphic Fantasy, a Murderer in the House, and More New YA Books for April 29, 2026

Heir by Sabaa Tahir Aiz grew up in the Kegari slums. She’s seen terrible things, and that’s part of why an old trauma has filled her with enough stamina to seek revenge. But her temper gets the best of her, and she finds herself in prison before she’s sought that revenge. Sirsha was banished from her own community because of a crime she committed. It’s not nice being an outcast, but she’s turned her luck into tracking and working with the elements of Earth. She’s desperate enough, though, to take on a job that requires hunting down a killer who has murdered children. She can do it, as she’s got the skills, but she keeps getting distracted by someone else. Someone charismatic. Cute. Deeply inconvenient. Quil is to become the prince of the empire the moment his aunt steps down. He’s not especially excited, in part because he knows power is not good and in part because he’s the son of the most hated person in the empire. But with an enemy threatening the survival …

Spring has sprung, and whether or not you’re able to spend time reading outside, hopefully you’re at least getting some fresh air through open windows as you sink into a good book. It’s a very big paperback release week in the YA world, which you’ll soon see below. Some of them are paperbacks that are following hardcover releases, while others are paperback originals–something that I continue to think we need more of, as they offer the same kind of direct appeal to teen readers that books which release simultaneously in hardcover and paperback do. There’s a really nice range of genres and voices represented this week, too. We’ve got a take on Chinese folklore, a house haunted by missing teens, inventions that conjure demons, and so much more. New Hardcover YA Releases This Week A Song for the Dark by Brooke Archer Blackridge isn’t a safe town. For the past 20 years, a kid has disappeared over the …

Horror has a lock on making sapphic love seem trivial

Horror has a lock on making sapphic love seem trivial

In the tropey world of horror, few have it worse off than the bumbling, buxom straight ladies literally tripping over themselves while attempting to escape a slowly approaching killer. But if you pause those scenes and look to the moonlit lake at the back of the frame, you may notice a rising contender, the situationally queer women written into the script to make out just once, and real quick, before something violent and horrific happens right as things are about to get good. It’s already been well-established in horror that if two characters are romantically connected, and those characters are shown engaging in anything more than a brisk kiss on the lips, one or both of those characters will end up being an insane murderer, or hacked into pieces before the credits roll. Now, snap your fingers and turn both of those characters into women and, though the established trope may remain the same, the twist of the knife will now be that the duration of their romantic connection need only last as long as …

My Most Anticipated Sapphic Horror Books of 2026

I’ve been a scaredy cat my whole life, with horror movies giving me nightmares for weeks. And yet, some of my favourite people love horror. So, I keep dipping my toe in the genre, despite the risks. I started by incorporating some queer horror reads around Halloween, and I was surprised to find a few I loved. Over the years, that has turned into a month-long horror reading marathon in October. Now, it’s spilling into the rest of the year, too. What can I say?: there’s nothing like a sapphic gothic novel. At this point, I’m forced to admit that horror is one of my top genres—in fact, the majority of my most anticipated releases are horror or horror-adjacent. Here are three sapphic horror novels out in 2026 on my TBR, from a dark necromantic fantasy to a historical boarding school gothic to a YA Faustian bargain. All Access members, read on …
