Chornobyl at 40: Settlers and horses survive Russian drones, contamination | Russia-Ukraine war News

Oslyak had just finished a night shift at ChNPP on April 25, and had returned to Pripyat and their cosy apartment, with its wall rugs and soft lighting typical of functional Soviet style.  He slipped into bed next to Nikitina and fell into a deep sleep. At 1:23am, explosions rang out across the night sky. The city stirred in the night, and some residents woke to the blasts and an unfamiliar light on the horizon, but Nikitina and her husband remained asleep. In the plant, molten fuel burned through layers of concrete and steel towards water beneath the reactor, threatening an even greater explosion. Firefighters and workers responded, unaware of the danger, climbing onto the roof and into the wreckage as radiation surged beyond levels that humans can handle. Two Chornobyl plant workers died that night as a result of the initial explosion, and a further 28 personnel and emergency workers called to the site would die in the following weeks as a result of acute radiation poisoning. But in Pripyat, as Nikitina woke on …

GWM was among the first Chinese car companies to enter Europe, making a notable debut with a range of electric vehicles at the 2021 Munich car show. However, the company subsequently struggled to gain significant traction. As part of its renewed European push, GWM plans to commence sales in 13 European markets within the next 12 months. “We don’t want to be the loser in any market in the world,” GWM International President Parker Shi told reporters at the company’s technology centre in Baoding, China. “We’ll come back and we will go with the right product.” While more recent Chinese …

A visual guide to Artemis II and previous missions to the moon | Space News

Monday, April 6, 2026, is one of the most significant days for human spaceflight in more than 50 years. At 13:56 EDT (17:56 GMT) Artemis II mission is expected to break the record for the farthest distance humans have travelled from Earth, originally set by Apollo 13 at 400,171km (248,655 miles). The crew is expected to eventually reach a maximum distance of 406,773 km (252,760 miles) from Earth at 19:07 EDT (23:07 GMT) as they perform a lunar flyby aboard the Orion spacecraft. This means Artemis II will travel about 6,602km (4,105 miles) further into space than any human in history. What is NASA’s Artemis programme? The Artemis programme is NASA’s multi-decade mission to return men and women to the moon for the first time since 1972, establish a long-term base there and eventually enable future missions to Mars by crews. The programme is currently divided into five missions: Artemis I, II, III, IV and V. Artemis I was the inaugural uncrewed test flight, which launched on November 16, 2022, and lasted 25 days. It …

Earth in rear-view of Artemis II astronauts | Space News

Published On 5 Apr 20265 Apr 2026 Artemis II astronauts have crossed the halfway point between Earth and the moon as they race towards a planned lunar flyby, and NASA has released the first images of Earth captured from inside the Orion spacecraft. As the astronauts settled down to sleep early on Sunday after rounding off the fourth day of their 10-day mission, they were nearly 322,000km (200,000 miles) from Earth and 132,000km (82,000 miles) from the moon, according to NASA’s online dashboard. The United States space agency published photographs taken from the capsule, including a full view of Earth showing a glowing orb of deep blue oceans and swirling clouds. The four-person crew is expected to swing around the far side of the moon early this coming week, a manoeuvre not attempted in more than 50 years. The next major milestone in the journey is expected overnight from Sunday into Monday US time when the crew is due to enter what NASA calls the “lunar sphere of influence”, the point at which the moon’s …
