Trump scraps Scotch whisky tariffs ‘in honor’ of King Charles

U.S. President Donald Trump repealed tariffs on a key U.K. export on Thursday, after a state visit from King Charles III and Queen Camilla appeared to help mend transatlantic relations dampened by a series of political standoffs. “In Honor of the King and Queen of the United Kingdom, who have just left the White House, soon headed back to their wonderful Country, I will be removing the Tariffs and Restrictions on Whiskey having to do with Scotland’s ability to work with the Commonwealth of Kentucky on Whiskey and Bourbon, two very important Industries within Scotland and Kentucky,” the president said in a Thursday Truth Social post. “People have wanted to do this for a long time, in that there had been great Inter-Country Trade, especially having to do with the Wooden Barrels used. The King and Queen got me to do something that nobody else was able to do, without hardly even asking!” he added. Brown, 22, had been due to star as real-life gymnast Kerri Strug in Netflix’s Olympics drama Perfect. The project – which was announced last September – will no longer be going ahead at the streaming giant after the Stranger Things star left due to creative differences, two sources have confirmed to Deadline. Brown was set to portray Strug, a member of the 1996 “Magnificent Seven” USA gymnastics team. At 18 years old, the Tucson-born gymnast helped take her team to first place after she performed the vault on an injured ankle. The moment has become a touchstone of Olympic history after Strug’s coach had to carry her off the mat when her ankle gave out – but not before she landed perfectly. Her coach had to …

Vermicomposting: How a DIY worm farm can compost food scraps, paper or a whole kangaroo

Vermicomposting: How a DIY worm farm can compost food scraps, paper or a whole kangaroo

Compost worms can make quick work of food scraps and other waste Rob Walls/Alamy Worms. I’ve got a few. I split my time between a small inner-city apartment in Sydney, Australia, and a wild property that was once a farm, before it was abandoned in the 1970s, four hours to the south. They are opposites in almost every way – one thrums with the incessant noise of a big city, while the other moves to the beat of the wilderness: kookaburra choruses, deafening cicadas and, at night, powerful owl hoots and the gurgling, zombie-like calls of brushtail possums. But the one thing both properties have in common is that they each boast a cranking worm farm. The one on the farm is huge and deals with the organic waste of an entire household, while the one in the city is small enough to fit on a porch and easy to set up – suitable for anyone. On the farm, I’ve continued to let nature take its course on the land and use it as a …

The Repair Shop scraps Bob Monkhouse segment over ‘inappropriate’ jokes

In the BBC show, specialists help to fix personal items and heirlooms brought in by members of the public. But when the late comedian’s handwritten quips, dating back to the 1960s, arrived in the barn, they were considered too offensive by the show’s production team and the segment was scrapped midway through filming. It was reported by The Sun that the item was being repaired as part of a Monkhouse tribute episode, but it’s understood this is not the case, and the segment was merely scrapped from an ordinary instalment of the show. Bob Monkhouse’s joke books were deemed too ‘inappropriate’ for segment on ‘The Repair …

Major airliner scraps all flights as fuel prices surge – full list | UK | News

The Iran war has claimed its first major European aviation casualty after Scandinavian Airlines became the first significant carrier on the continent to axe flights in response to rocketing fuel costs. SAS — which operates as the national carrier for Denmark, Norway and Sweden — confirmed on Tuesday it was withdrawing a substantial number of services from its timetable, blaming an energy market upended by the Middle East conflict. “Given the ongoing situation in the Middle East, including the sharp and sudden increase in global fuel prices, we are taking measures to strengthen our resilience,” a spokesman said. “One such measure is a limited number of short-term flight cancellations.” Hundreds of departures have been pulled this week, with the airline focusing the cuts on brief internal Scandinavian hops where alternative services exist. SAS is one of the continent’s busiest operators, connecting roughly 25 million passengers to destinations worldwide each year. Threat to European aviation The decision has amplified fears that the Hormuz crisis could snowball into a sector-wide emergency across Europe, reports the Telegraph. The …

UK scraps offshore wind tariffs, saving manufacturers millions

UK scraps offshore wind tariffs, saving manufacturers millions

British manufacturers will save millions of pounds a year when the UK Government removes tariffs on offshore wind energy components from 1 April. Offshore wind tariffs will be removed on 33 industrial goods through a new measure to support progress towards the UK’s clean energy superpower mission. The measure will also enable British manufacturers to produce components at a lower cost and allow reinvestment in the clean energy sector. Offshore wind: The backbone of the UK’s clean energy sector This investment in the UK’s largest source of renewable energy is vital for addressing the climate crisis and building the UK’s energy security. Offshore wind is 40% cheaper to produce and maintain than new gas projects, according to the LCOE industry metric. This follows a record 8.4GW and £22bn of offshore wind investment secured in the January 2026 Contracts for Difference Allocation Round 7 – enough clean energy to power the equivalent of over 12 million homes. This includes Berwick Bank in the North Sea – the first new Scottish project since 2022 and one of …

Carlos López Estrada revealed during a recent Reddit AMA that the studio was not moving forward with his planned musical, “It’s dead, sadly,” the Mexican filmmaker wrote in response to a fan asking for updates on the project. “I say ‘sadly’ because I actually thought there was something really special (and original!) there. Some truly extraordinary music we had figured out for it.” Estrada added: “I keep daydreaming about doing it independently with different characters.” The Hollywood Reporter first reported in 2020 that Kari Granlund had been attached to write a script for the feature, a live-action and CGI hybrid. Ed. Dept. Scraps “Unconstitutional” Race Preferences In Federal PhD Grant Program

Ed. Dept. Scraps “Unconstitutional” Race Preferences In Federal PhD Grant Program

Authored by Jennifer Kabbany via The College Fix, The U.S. Department of Education has agreed to rewrite the exclusionary race-based eligibility rules of a federal student scholarship program, resolving a lawsuit filed against the program. “That means the McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program–a federal program distributing roughly $60 million annually to help students pursue graduate education–will no longer discriminate based on race,” stated Young America’s Foundation, which had sued the Biden administration in 2024 over the program. The lawsuit had alleged the program excluded Asians, Arabs, Middle Easterners, non-Hispanic Latinos, some Africans, and whites unless they meet a limited exception for first-generation low-income students. Instead, it supported primarily black, Native American and Pacific Islander students, according to the complaint. “The McNair Program’s race-based provisions are unconstitutional, should not and will not be enforced, and are subject to a planned forthcoming regulatory change to rescind the race-based criteria,” according to YAF’s Feb. 17 motion to dismiss, with which the Education Department agreed to by not objecting. U.S. Department of Education press secretary for higher education Ellen Keast confirmed the changes in a statement to Fox News: “Consistent …

I would’ve loved to deliver on the Future War I had planned in seasons 2 and 3, but I’m also very happy with how it feels contained as is. “Maybe someday I’ll do a big thread about the plans I had for the …

Carney scraps Canada EV sales mandate, but earmarks funds to aid transition

Carney scraps Canada EV sales mandate, but earmarks funds to aid transition

Prime Minister Mark Carney on Thursday cancelled a mandate for all vehicles sold in Canada to be electric by 2035, while announcing a multi-billion-dollar plan to support EV production. The announcement marked another departure from policies backed by his climate-focused predecessor Justin Trudeau, but Carney said he wanted to incentivize EV production while bolstering a Canadian auto industry hammered by US tariffs. Since replacing Trudeau last year, Carney has also scrapped the former leader’s carbon tax on individual households and advanced plans to build a new oil pipeline from Alberta to the Pacific coast – infuriating environmental groups. Asked Thursday if he still considered Canada a leader in the fight against climate change, Carney said: “Absolutely.” He stressed his climate policies would be focused on “results and solutions”. WatchDonald Trump threatens 100% tariff on Ottawa Trudeau had passed legislation mandating that 20 percent of vehicles sold this year be electric, with a 60 percent target by 2030 – benchmarks that faced criticism from automakers. While he pivoted away from those mandates, Carney stressed that the future strength …
