Muchova edges teen Mboko to reach first Miami Open semi-final

Muchova edges teen Mboko to reach first Miami Open semi-final

March 24 : Karolina Muchova needed all of her experience to hold off rising Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko 7-5 7-6(5) on Tuesday, booking a place in her first Miami Open semi-final in a match she admitted could have gone either way. The 29-year-old Czech secured her fifth WTA 1000 semi-final berth in a hard-fought contest that lasted one hour and 47 minutes. “It was very close, basically one point at the end. It can always change in tennis. I’m just very grateful I was able to win the last point,” Muchova said. The opening set was a tight affair, remaining on serve until 5-4 when Muchova found herself in trouble at 0-30 before reeling off four consecutive points to level at five games all. She then capitalised on a shaky service game from World number nine Mboko to edge ahead, eventually converting on her third set point to take the opener. The second set proved no easier, with both players holding serve all the way to a tiebreak. Muchova seized control with an early mini-break …

Semifinal Win Puts LIU In. Tennessee State Qualifies for the First Time in 32 Years

Semifinal Win Puts LIU In. Tennessee State Qualifies for the First Time in 32 Years

The first automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament came a little bit early. Long Island University claimed the Northeast Conference’s berth by beating Wagner in the semifinals of that league tournament Saturday. The Sharks will play in the NEC men’s title game Tuesday night, but their opponent (Mercyhurst) is ineligible for the NCAAs because it is still a reclassifying Division I institution. When Mercyhurst topped Stonehill to advance to the championship game, that meant the other semifinal between LIU and Wagner — Brooklyn vs. Staten Island — would determine who reached the NCAA field of 68. Later Saturday, the Ohio Valley Conference awarded its automatic bid when Tennessee State won the OVC Tournament with a 93-67 rout of Morehead State. LIU will play in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2018. Tennessee State, the alma mater of Oprah Winfrey, hasn’t been in since 1994. Neither program has won a game in the Big Dance. Elsewhere on Saturday, Texas A&M and Texas Christian helped their at-large chances on a day when plenty of other …

Score and match updates from today’s T20 World Cup semi-final

Their defeat also came in spite of the considerable advantage of winning the toss, allowing them to chase as the dew took hold. Only twice in the previous 14 T20 World Cup knockout matches played under lights had the side batting first won. While England would hit 15 sixes, they still fell four short of India’s tally of 19. Seven of these came off Jofra Archer alone. With the new ball, Archer’s pace was exploited by Samson, either side of Brook’s drop. When he returned later in the innings, Archer leant upon his slower balls, which sat up in the pitch, just as they had against Nepal and West Indies earlier in the World Cup. The contrast with the supreme Bumrah, who had the chutzpah to execute a series of yorkers and only conceded 33 runs to Archer’s 61, was uncomfortable. Sam Curran, with his much-vaunted moon ball, was treated almost as brutally. Tournaments are natural backends to careers. This match might well prove the last international appearance for Liam Dawson, whose solitary over leaked …

Ice hockey-Canada play defending champions Finland, US meet Slovakia in men’s men’s semi-final showdowns after OT drama

MILAN, Feb 18 : Overtime drama defined the men’s Olympic ice hockey quarter-finals on Wednesday, with favourites Canada and defending champions Finland surviving to set up a semi-final clash, while the United States also needed extra time and will meet Slovakia in the last four. With NHL players returning to the Games for the first time since 2014, a much-hyped final between the U.S. and rivals Canada is still on the cards, while Finland continue their defence and the Slovakians aim to reach their first gold-medal game. Both semi-finals are scheduled for Friday at Santagiulia Arena. Canada came in as heavy favourites and their group stage performances only furthered their status as they knocked five past both the Czech Republic and Switzerland, conceding one goal, before taking France apart in a 10-2 thumping. As group winners, Canada ended up meeting the Czechs again in the quarter-finals where they found themselves 3-2 down late in the final period, but levelled the game before Mitch Marner scored the winner 82 seconds into overtime. Wednesday’s drama may have …

Djokovic rolls back the years to beat Sinner in Melbourne semi-final – Sports

Novak Djokovic came back from behind to qualify for his 11th Australian Open final on Friday, taking down reigning champion Jannik Sinner in a five-set epic. The ten-time Melbourne champion will take on Carlos Alcaraz in Sunday’s final. The Spaniard outlasted Alexander Zverev in the earlier semi-final, eventually coming out on top after a gruelling five-and-a-half hour match in which he struggled with cramps. Friday’s draw for the Champions League play-offs handed Paris Saint-Germain a familiar foe, as the holders were paired with league rivals Monaco for the February double-header. The winner of the all-Ligue 1 tie will face either Chelsea or Barcelona in the last 16.  Marseille will look to bounce back from their dramatic Champions League exit as they take on Paris FC in Ligue 1 on Saturday. In the matchday opener on Friday night, Lens provisionally reclaimed top spot from Paris Saint-Germain with a slender win over Le Havre. Former downhill Olympic champion Lindsey Vonn is now a doubt for next week’s Winter Olympics after crashing while competing at the Crans-Montana downhill …
