‘Shameful’: How controversial AFCON final descended into total chaos

A missed Panenka in the 24th minute of stoppage time, a team storming off the pitch and ultimately a second Africa Cup of Nations title for Senegal. That, though, barely scratches the surface in telling the story of a truly extraordinary AFCON final on Sunday night. Pape Gueye scored a brilliant extra-time winner to leave Morocco devastated in front of their home fans in Rabat. Either side of that strike, total chaos ensued. Here’s what happened – and all the fallout. For 90 minutes, it had been a typical cagey, tense final. It remained goalless heading into eight minutes of stoppage time, at which point the mayhem began. Senegal thought they had won it when Crystal Palace winger Ismaila Sarr nodded into the net on the rebound after Abdoulaye Seck’s header had hit the woodwork. However, the whistle had already gone as the referee deemed Seck to have fouled Achraf Hakimi. Replays showed that to be a harsh decision, with Hakimi going down under minimal contact, but the quick whistle meant that VAR could not …

Senegal fans dance in the streets after Africa Cup of Nations win

DAKAR, Jan 19 : Overjoyed Senegalese football fans set off fireworks and danced in the streets of Dakar into the pre-dawn hours on Monday after their national team secured their second Africa Cup of Nations title in the last three editions. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye declared Monday a national holiday after the final whistle sent jubilant supporters out to mob traffic roundabouts throughout the seaside capital after Senegal’s 1-0 victory in extra time. The match was full of drama, with Senegal coach Pape Bouna Thiaw ordering his players off the field when Congolese referee Jean-Jacques Ndala awarded a late penalty to hosts Morocco. The 14-minute delay ended only after Sadio Mane coaxed his teammates back onto the pitch. Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy then stopped Morocco star Brahim Diaz’s Panenka-style chip from the spot, and midfielder Pape Gueye netted the winner in the 94th minute. While Morocco coach Walid Regragui said afterwards his Senegalese counterpart’s behaviour “wasn’t classy,” crowds gathered at Dakar’s African Renaissance Monument said his actions were justified. “This Africa Cup was full of …

Pape Gueye blasted Senegal to Africa Cup of Nations glory after Morocco’s Brahim Díaz missed a stoppage-time penalty as the tournament ended in chaos. Villarreal midfielder Gueye hammered home an eventful game’s only goal in extra time to secure the continental crown for the second time, but only after Real Madrid star Díaz had wasted a glorious, if controversial, opportunity to win it for the hosts when he directed his Panenka attempt straight at goalkeeper Édouard Mendy. Senegal coach Pape Thiaw, who had minutes earlier seen his team denied a goal for a foul, took his players off the pitch after referee Jean Jacques Ndala awarded the hosts a spot-kick after a VAR review eight minutes into stoppage time amid acrimonious scenes, but saw them live to fight another day. Thiaw’s men, fuelled by a sense of injustice, regrouped and forced their way in front when Gueye surged forward and blasted a left-foot piledriver into the net off the underside of the crossbar. Senegal win Afcon title after farcical scenes over penalty award

RABAT, Jan 18 : Senegal stormed off the field in protest at a penalty awarded against them before returning to beat hosts Morocco 1-0 after extra time and win the Africa Cup of Nations amid farcical scenes in Sunday’s final. Midfielder Pape Gueye netted the 94th-minute winner after Morocco’s star player Brahim Diaz had squandered the chance to win it for the home side by fluffing the last-gasp penalty in normal time following a 14-minute delay. Senegal coach Pape Bouna Thiaw ordered his players off and it was talisman Sadio Mane who persuaded them to return. The penalty was awarded following a VAR check by Congolese referee Jean-Jacques Ndala after Diaz had been tugged to the ground by Senegal full back El Hadji Malick Diouf while defending a corner five minutes into stoppage time. Officials and players jostled with each other while the referee consulted the touchline screen and again when Senegal walked off. Once the players returned to the field, Diaz inexplicably tried a Panenka-style chip and his weak penalty sailed tamely into the …
