Beef season 2 review: Charles Melton is hilarious in another bloody, sizzling serving

Beef season 2 review: Charles Melton is hilarious in another bloody, sizzling serving

A star rating of 4 out of 5. Netflix’s Beef is the latest celebrated ‘miniseries’ to ditch that label in pursuit of further accolades, but Lee Sung Jin’s revenge-themed comedy-drama isn’t resting on its laurels in season 2. Rather, the screenwriter is bravely taking his first self-created series down the anthology path, shedding his original leads Steven Yeun and Ali Wong for an all-new story orbiting a country club for the super-rich. The recruitment of Alien: Romulus star Cailee Spaeny is ironic, given that Beef’s evolution matches that of the iconic sci-fi horror franchise, which famously went from lone survival story Alien to all-out war flick Aliens. Beef season 2 could, accordingly, have gone by ‘Beefs’ instead, doubling the number of participants in its bitter feud as two couples become fatefully entangled by a chance encounter. Oscar Isaac (Dune) and Carey Mulligan (The Ballad of Wallis Island) play middle-class couple Josh and Lindsay, who work senior positions at the aforementioned leisure club, which comes with an eye-watering $300,000 admission fee. San Gabriel restaurant ordered to stop serving stinky tofu over complaints

San Gabriel restaurant ordered to stop serving stinky tofu over complaints

Stinky tofu is no longer on the menu at Golden Leaf restaurant in San Gabriel after the city received complaints about the dish’s aroma. But the family behind the restaurant is fighting to bring back the popular Taiwanese street food, prized for its distinct, potent stench. “The scent of stinky tofu in Taiwanese night markets is an invitation to community and tradition,” said David Liao. He owns Golden Leaf, located in a strip mall at the corner of North Mission Drive and West Las Tunas Drive in San Gabriel. The dish, known as chou doufu in Chinese, is “a cherished taste of home and a source of cultural pride,” he said. There are several restaurants in the San Gabriel Valley that offer the dish, with most deep-frying squares of the tofu, resulting in a crisp exterior and a porous, sponge-like center. The flavor and smell can range from mild to eye-wateringly stinky, like an extra funky blue cheese or excellent kimchi. With most new refugees barred, synagogues turn to serving those already here

With most new refugees barred, synagogues turn to serving those already here

DURHAM, N.C. (RNS) — Over the past five years, members of Judea Reform Congregation have helped resettle 13 refugee families from such countries as Afghanistan, Haiti, Syria, Ukraine and Venezuela. Many of its volunteers are still caring for them. They recently sent the refugee families a spring food gift basket to celebrate Ramadan, Nowruz and Easter. Welcoming refugees is still a core mission of the synagogue, but no new refugees will be welcomed at the annual Refugee Shabbat commemoration this weekend. With President Donald Trump’s executive order, signed the day of his inauguration, all refugee admissions have been frozen, with the exception of Afrikaners, South African white farmers, of which 2,000 have been resettled across the U.S. Instead, at Friday night (March 13) services, the congregation will hear from the first Latina member of the Durham City Council about the city’s efforts to welcome immigrants. Next month, volunteers from this synagogue will join up with the Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Durham to start a sewing circle for Afghan women who have been resettled in …

HMP Risley prison guard sent naked pictures and videos of sex acts to serving inmate

A prison officer sent naked pictures and videos of sex acts to a serving inmate after the two formed an “intimate relationship” behind bars. Zoe Oldham also received bank transfers from a family member of the criminal in question, Lewis Smith. But their secret romance was rumbled when he became “overprotective” of her and began attacking other prisoners whom he believed had stepped out of line with the mum. The authorities then discovered a mobile phone hidden within a sock in his cell, with more than 1,000 messages which were uncovered as a result having laid bare the true nature of their relationship. Liverpool Crown Court heard today, Tuesday, that Oldham had been a guard at HMP Risley in Warrington for five years by 2023, when she engaged in an “intimate relationship” with Smith over the course of several months. This “included her sending images of her genitals” and money being transferred into the 29-year-old officer’s account. Simon Christie, prosecuting, described how there was also a “strong inference that there was a sexual relationship”, although …

Maxwell, who is in prison for child sex trafficking as an accomplice of Jeffrey Epstein, told Giannelloni that she would introduce her to someone “more famous than God”. Five Paris restaurants serving mouthwatering ramen

Five Paris restaurants serving mouthwatering ramen

It is no secret that ramen restaurants are everywhere, with each new opening sparking long lines of diners eager to dip their spoons into a steaming broth. But what exactly is ramen? To understand, we can only recommend the excellent book Ramen Forever by Tim Anderson, chef, author and ramen specialist. In it, the chef points out that this dish – wheat noodles soaked in a broth and topped with various garnishes – is believed to have originated in Japan during the Meiji era, around 1890, in food stalls opened by Chinese immigrants near the port of Yokohama. It was only after World War II, when Japanese people began consuming American wheat, that ramen became popular, eventually making its way into Japanese homes with the invention of instant noodles by Momofuku Ando in 1958. With its multiple and evolving origins, ramen takes on a wide variety of forms and flavors, depending especially on the region, and sometimes even the city, where it is made. That is why, Anderson says, ramen is a “glocal” dish: global …
