Netflix has released some first-look images of upcoming serial killer film The Whisper Man – which sees Hollywood icon Robert De Niro star alongside Severance’s Adam Scott and The White Lotus star Michelle Monaghan. A streaming release date of Friday 28 August has also been revealed for the thriller, which is based on a bestselling 2019 novel of the same name by Alex North and will be directed by New Zealand director James Ashcroft (The Rule of Jenny Pen). The synopsis for the film reads: “When his eight-year-old son is abducted, a widowed crime writer looks to his estranged father, a retired former police detective, for help, only to discover a connection with the decades-old case of a convicted serial killer known as The Whisper Man.” Cr. 2026 ASC Awards Full Winners List

2026 ASC Awards Full Winners List

One Battle After Another’s Michael Bauman has won the American Society of Cinematographers’ top prize for work on a theatrical feature-film, setting the Oscar nominee up as the front-runner to win the Academy Award in exactly one week. To this point, the race has been considered a nailbiter: Bauman also won the BAFTA, Train Dreams’ Adolpho Veloso won the Spirit Award, and Sinners’ Autumn Durald Arkapaw dominated the critics’ awards circuit (she’d be the first woman ever to win the cinematography Oscar). The list of nominees was rounded out by Frankenstein’s Dan Laustsen and Marty Supreme’s Darius Khondji, both of whom are also nominated at the Oscars.  This is the second time in three years that the ASC Awards and the Academy landed on the same lineup of cinematography nominees. (Last year, the guild oddly expanded its nominations slate from the usual five to seven, but still blanked the Oscar-favored Emilia Pérez.) When it comes to winners, however, the voting bodies have matched for best cinematography only six out of the last 10 years, going …

Severance Producer Boards Sequel to Nigerian Netflix Hit Black Book

Nicholas Weinstock, the Emmy-nominated producer of Severance, is on board to produce The Black Book 2 – Old Scores, the sequel to Editi Effiong’s 2023 Nigerian revenge thriller that smashed records worldwide. The original Black Book, made for just $1 million, hit no. 3 on Netflix‘s global charts in 2023, ranking in the top 10 in more than 69 countries and racking up more than 20 million views worldwide. It stars Richard Mofe-Damijo as Paul Edima, a former hitman and deacon, who takes revenge after his son is framed and killed by a corrupt police unit. Weinstock’s Invention Studios is producing The Black Book 2 along with Effiong’s Anakle Films. Effiong returns as writer and director on the sequel. The feature picks up where Black Book ended, with Paul Edima continuing his assault on the corrupt system. A blurb for the film says the second installment will “delve deeper…into themes of justice, redemption, and societal unrest in contemporary Nigeria.” “The Black Book showed us that local stories can spark global conversations,” said Effiong, in a …

Apple acquires all rights to ‘Severance,’ will produce future seasons in-house

Apple has acquired the IP and all rights to its hit show “Severance” from its original studio, Fifth Season, as first reported by Deadline. Under the deal, which was worth just under $70 million, Apple’s in-house studio will be producing the show’s future seasons. Fifth Season will remain as an executive producer. The deal is similar to one Apple struck with AMC Studios for sci-fi show “Silo” after season one. “Severance” will now be one of Apple’s marquee titles, joining popular series such as “Your Friends and Neighbors” and “Stick.” According to Deadline, the production costs for “Severance” had exceeded what Fifth Season could afford. The studio had already requested advances from Apple and was considering relocating production from New York to Canada for bigger and quicker tax rebates. Since Apple definitely has the funds to back the show, the company decided to take full control. “Severance” is important to the streamer, as the show’s second season became Apple’s most-watched series at the time. It also had the highest number of nominations at the 2025 Emmy …

Apple Takes Full Control of ‘Severance’ in Surprise Deal

Apple has fully acquired the rights to its hit Apple TV series “Severance,” bringing future seasons and content in-house under Apple Studios, Deadline reports. Apple is said to have acquired the intellectual property and all rights to Severance from Fifth Season in a deal valued at just under $70 million. Apple previously licensed “Severance” from Fifth Season. More than six years after ‌Apple TV‌ launched, Apple Studios now produces roughly half of the platform’s slate. The move transitions the series from an externally produced show to a fully in-house Apple Studios production, with Fifth Season remaining attached as an executive producer going forward. The change mirrors Apple’s earlier move to bring the sci-fi series “Silo” under Apple Studios after its first season. The acquisition follows a difficult production cycle for the show’s second season, which reportedly cost as much as $20 million per episode. Season two faced prolonged production delays caused by COVID-19, Hollywood labor strikes, and script changes that led to reshoots and scrapped sets. Borrowing costs rose significantly during the extended production window, …
