China steps out of the shadows in Iran war – Access Asia

China steps out of the shadows in Iran war – Access Asia

China’s President Xi Jinping has broken a six-week silence about the war in Iran, vowing to take a “constructive” role in efforts to end the conflict. Beijing is wary of being drawn into a war it took no part in, and faces a delicate balancing act between its long-term partnership with Iran and its strategic interests in the Middle East and beyond. Yuka Royer speaks with Ja Ian Chong, a political scientist at the National University of Singapore, about what’s behind Beijing’s calculations.  Also on the show: India has embarked on a costly and long-overdue project to update its official population count. The year-long census involves multiple phases, with millions of officials carrying out door-to-door surveys. Last tallied in 2011, the new nationwide survey could redefine welfare programmes and redraw political representations in the world’s most populous nation.  Finally, one of Bollywood’s most iconic voices, singer Asha Bhosle, has passed away at the age of 92. Celebrated for mixing traditional, religious and Western melodies in her songs, Bhosle dominated the Indian music industry for over …

Paris’s Bourse de Commerce explores the interplay of shadows and light

Paris’s Bourse de Commerce explores the interplay of shadows and light

‘Titiriteros’, 2023, by Victor Man. VICTOR MAN. PINAULT COLLECTION. Chiaroscuro has haunted the history of art. Starting on March 4, the Bourse de Commerce will embrace this dramatic art technique that constrasts shadow and light with “Clair-obscur”: a collective exhibition that brings together around 20 artists who explore this paradoxical concept, mainly through works from the Pinault Collection. These works evoke twilight, embrace the night and await the day, poised on the edge of the visible and invisible. “They embody a strong tendency among today’s artists to resist too much light, too much clarity, too many artificial emotions. This resonates deeply with our present,” said Emma Lavigne, the director general of the Pinault Collection and the curator of the exhibition. Heirs of Caravaggio, the Baroque master who pushed pictorial technique to its limits, the gathered artists offer a contemporary interpretation on a path unavoidably tinged with darkness. There are bodies fragmenting in Danh Vō’s work; bodies igniting in the mesmerizing videos of Bill Viola; atoms exploding in Trisha Donnelly’s pieces; young girls flirting with death …

Ravens devour Jackie and Shadow’s eggs, but more are possible this season

Ravens devour Jackie and Shadow’s eggs, but more are possible this season

Devoted fans of beloved bald eagle couple Jackie and Shadow are grieving after their recently laid eggs were destroyed by ravens, though there’s still hope that another clutch will come. Just before noon on Friday, Shadow left their Big Bear nest with its two eggs, according to Friends of Big Bear Valley, a nonprofit that monitors the eagles with 24-hour livestreams. Typically, the eagles would take shifts on egg duty. But Jackie was out, too. That afternoon, ravens flew into the unattended nest and ate the eggs. Less than 10 minutes later, Jackie returned and began incubating, or sitting on, one of the breached eggs “because her hormones are telling her to incubate.” said Jenny Voisard, media and website manager for the nonprofit. It’s not clear why the doting parents were both absent, “but we are sure they had their reasons as they have been incubating the eggs faithfully,” the nonprofit wrote in its “Eagle Log.” There are some possible explanations, according to Voisard. While Jackie and Shadow were out, eagle observers noticed there was …

The Shadows We Carry | Psychology Today

The Shadows We Carry | Psychology Today

People tell me quietly that they do not feel enough in certain spaces. They say they become too visible the moment they enter a room. They explain that in one setting they are seen as too feminine and in another not feminine enough. Immigrants describe feeling too foreign in professional circles, yet not authentic enough within their own communities. Queer individuals share that they are called brave in one place and told they are too much in another. When I first read Marlene Watson’s Facing the Black Shadow, I found myself pausing often and rereading passages as if someone were finally giving language to experiences that many people have carried quietly for generations. Watson describes the “black shadow” as an internalized belief in Black inferiority, one that settles not only in the mind but in relationships, families, and the body. Her stories about colorism, self-blame, and the long emotional reach of slavery are tender and honest, and they illuminate how deeply collective trauma can shape a sense of self. Although the “black shadow” emerges from …

An epic tale of power through the eyes of a man in the shadows

An epic tale of power through the eyes of a man in the shadows

Jude Law (Vladimir Putin) and Paul Dano (Vadim Baranov) in ‘The Wizard of the Kremlin,’ directed by Olivier Assayas. GAUMONT DISTRIBUTION LE MONDE’S VERDICT – Worth seeing For a deeper understanding of contemporary Russia, one can turn to the excellent documentary Mr. Nobody Against Putin, directed by Pavel Talankin and David Borenstein, available in theaters and on ARTE’s website. Through the testimony of a rebellious professor, viewers could see how Vladimir Putin’s powerful grip permeated every aspect of Russian citizens’ lives. And, on a different scale, there is Le Mage du Kremlin (The Wizard of the Kremlin), Olivier Assayas’s adaptation – assisted by writer Emmanuel Carrère – of the best-selling novel by Giuliano da Empoli, a former political adviser to Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi who later devoted himself to writing. Staying true to its source material, the film covers 30 years of political change in Russia, from Mikhail Gorbachev’s arrival at the Kremlin to the 2014 annexation of Crimea. This epic saga of power is told from behind the scenes by a man who …
