China’s President Xi Jinping has broken a six-week silence about the war in Iran, vowing to take a “constructive” role in efforts to end the conflict. Internet-famous eagle couple Jackie and Shadow have two new chicks in need of names. For a small donation, you can submit your name suggestion on the Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV) website. “We are a nonprofit and your generosity helps us provide the livestream ad free, as a public benefit for all. Our website is THE ONLY PLACE to submit chick names for consideration,” the organization wrote in a social media post. Name suggestions will be taken until Sunday, April 26 at 11:59 p.m. PDT. FOBBV will then take a random sample and provide a list of finalist names to a group of third graders in Big Bear Valley. That intrepid group of youngsters will have the final say. Last year, FOBBV received over 54,000 name suggestions. The students then chose from 31 names including Skye, Crackle, Talon, Blaze, and Bell. In the end, the kids decided on Sunny and Gizmo. It’s been another roller coaster nesting season for Jackie and Shadow, a pair of internet-famous bald eagle parents living in San Bernardino National Forest in Southern California. After two of their eggs were destroyed by ravens in January, Jackie and Shadow laid two new eggs that have successfully hatched. Starting on March 4, the Bourse de Commerce will embrace this dramatic art technique that constrasts shadow and light with “Clair-obscur”: a collective exhibition that brings together around 20 artists who explore this paradoxical concept, mainly through works from the Pinault Collection. These works evoke twilight, embrace the night and await the day, poised on the edge of the visible and invisible. “They embody a strong tendency among today’s artists to resist too much light, too much clarity, too many artificial emotions. This resonates deeply with our present,” said Emma Lavigne, the director general of the Pinault Collection and the curator of the exhibition. Devoted fans of beloved bald eagle couple Jackie and Shadow are grieving after their recently laid eggs were destroyed by ravens, though there’s still hope that another clutch will come. Just before noon on Friday, Shadow left their Big Bear nest with its two eggs, according to Friends of Big Bear Valley, a nonprofit that monitors the eagles with 24-hour livestreams. Typically, the eagles would take shifts on egg duty. But Jackie was out, too. That afternoon, ravens flew into the unattended nest and ate the eggs. Less than 10 minutes later, Jackie returned and began incubating, or sitting on, one of the breached eggs “because her hormones are telling her to incubate.” said Jenny Voisard, media and website manager for the nonprofit. It’s not clear why the doting parents were both absent, “but we are sure they had their reasons as they have been incubating the eggs faithfully,” the nonprofit wrote in its “Eagle Log.” There are some possible explanations, according to Voisard. They explain that in one setting they are seen as too feminine and in another not feminine enough. Immigrants describe feeling too foreign in professional circles, yet not authentic enough within their own communities. Queer individuals share that they are called brave in one place and told they are too much in another. When I first read Marlene Watson’s Facing the Black Shadow, I found myself pausing often and rereading passages as if someone were finally giving language to experiences that many people have carried quietly for generations. Watson describes the “black shadow” as an internalized belief in Black inferiority, one that settles not only in the mind but in relationships, families, and the body. Her stories about colorism, self-blame, and the long emotional reach of slavery are tender and honest, and they illuminate how deeply collective trauma can shape a sense of self.
