Steak ‘n Shake Announces Pitiful “Bitcoin Bonus” for Workers

Steak ‘n Shake Announces Pitiful “Bitcoin Bonus” for Workers

Illustration by Tag Hartman-Simkins / Futurism. Source: Getty Images Still think burger flipping is a low-wage job? Think again. The Indianapolis-based fast food chain Steak ‘n Shake recently announced a new “Bitcoin bonus” for hourly wage earners. According to an announcement on X-formerly-Twitter, “all hourly employees” at corporate locations will receive $0.21 in Bitcoin per hour. “We take care of our employees; they, in turn, take care of customers; and the results take care of themselves,” the company declared. Of course, there’s a catch. As the announcement reads, “employees will be able to collect their Bitcoin pay after a two-year vesting period,” meaning workers will have to stay with the company for two full years before they can actually access their “bonus.” Vesting periods are typical in corporate compensation models, where employees can be payed in part through stock options, RSUs, or 401(k) contributions. But they’re pretty much unheard of for fry cooks, as is the idea of a bonus paid out through crypto. The magnitude of the bonus is also rather meager. Assuming there …

‘Nowhere to hide’ for water companies, vows government in industry shake up | UK News

‘Nowhere to hide’ for water companies, vows government in industry shake up | UK News

The creaking water industry is set for a “once-in-a-generation set of reforms”, the government has said as it proposes new legislation to overhaul the system. Nightmare situations such as taps running dry in Kent and Sussex recently would be avoided, the government says, thanks to a new proactive system that would perform “MOTs” on water companies to preempt major failures. Ministers are set to unveil a series of reforms in parliament on Tuesday as they move ahead with a major shake-up in the industry in England and Wales, including abolishing the current system of overlapping regulators. Public confidence in the old way collapsed as sewage spills grew and pipes crumbled, while water company bosses enjoyed ever bigger bonuses. The new plans, outlined in a White Paper on Tuesday, would create one single regulator, as well as an ombudsman to make it easier for bill-payers to complain about their suppliers. But campaigners and the water industry have warned the proposals won’t come in soon or reach far enough. ‘Nowhere to hide’ The environment secretary Emma Reynolds …

Researchers Just Found Something That Could Shake the AI Industry to Its Core

Researchers Just Found Something That Could Shake the AI Industry to Its Core

For years now, AI companies, including Google, Meta, Anthropic, and OpenAI, have insisted that their large language models aren’t technically storing copyrighted works in their memory and instead “learn” from their training data like a human mind. It’s a carefully worded distinction that’s been integral to their attempts to defend themselves against a rapidly growing barrage of legal challenges. It also cuts to the core of copyright law itself. Copyright is a form of intellectual property law designed to protect original works and their creators. Under the US Copyright Act of 1976, a copyright owner has the exclusive right to “reproduce, adapt, distribute, publicly perform, and publicly display the work.” But, crucially, the “fair use” doctrine holds that others can use copyrighted materials for purposes like criticism, journalism, and research. That’s been the AI industry’s defense in court against accusations of infringement; OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has gone as far as to say that it’s “over” if the industry isn’t allowed to freely leverage copyrighted data to train its models. Rights holders have long cried …

Under 10% of an earthquake’s energy makes the ground shake

Under 10% of an earthquake’s energy makes the ground shake

Earthquakes are driven by energy stored up in rocks over millennia—energy that, once released, we perceive mainly in the form of the ground’s shaking. But a quake also generates a flash of heat and fractures and damages underground rocks. And exactly how much energy goes into each of these three processes is exceedingly difficult to measure in the field. Now, with the help of carefully controlled miniature “lab quakes,” MIT geophysicist Matěj Peč and colleagues have quantified this so-called energy budget. Only about 1% to 10% of a lab quake’s energy causes physical shaking, they found, while 1% to 30% goes into breaking up rock and creating new surfaces. The vast majority heats up the area around a quake’s epicenter, producing a temperature spike that can actually melt surrounding material. The team also found that the fractions of quake energy producing heat, shaking, and rock fracturing can shift depending on the tectonic activity the region has experienced in the past. “The deformation history—essentially what the rock remembers—really influences how destructive an earthquake could be,” says …
