Politics is shaken by a new wave of #MeToo reckonings

This story was originally reported by Grace Panetta of The 19th. Meet Grace and read more of their reporting on gender, politics and policy.   A years-long, explosive investigation by The New York Times last month exposed allegations of sexual abuse by the late labor leader Cesar Chavez. Two members of Congress, one Democrat and one Republican, resigned this week after being accused of sexual misconduct. And Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer is facing an internal investigation, including allegations of inappropriate behavior by her father and husband toward young women staff. The #MeToo movement, founded in 2006 by activist Tarana Burke, brought a reckoning for powerful men at its public peak in 2017 and 2018, leading to changes in laws and policies to address abuse and help survivors get justice. It also drew a swift cultural backlash, culminating in President Donald Trump’s election to a second term after he was found liable of sexual abuse. Now, in 2026, sexual misconduct by people in positions of power is back at the forefront of the political conversation and …

Andrew left ‘visibly shaken’ in ‘dressing down’ by senior royal | Royal | News

The former Prince Andrew built a playboy image through numerous romantic liaisons before marrying Sarah Ferguson. After their divorce, the ex-prince allegedly returned to his bachelor ways, even turning up at rock star Courtney Love’s residence to “look for chicks.” In “Prince Andrew: The War Hero from Buckingham Palace” by Jessica Jayne, the author outlines how Andrew was preferred over his brother, Prince Charles, by both the Queen and Prince Philip. She claims: “Andrew was the son that Philip really wanted. The Duke wanted a tough boy, not a sensitive one like Charles. “Andrew inherited his father’s charm and looks as well as the Mountbatten arrogance. He was the only one who could shake his father out of one of his famous sulks.” The book, released in 2012, indicates that over time, it became clear that Andrew, the spare to the heir, had become the Queen’s favourite. Jessica Jayne explains, “His early life as a playboy was hurting the image of the royal family, further worsened by the fact that the prince didn’t perform engagements …

How the death of a far-right activist has shaken up the French left’s mayoral campaigns

Rabya Boinaheri, LFI candidate for mayor of the 15th and 16th arrondissements of Marseille, February 20, 2026. THEO GIACOMETTI FOR LE MONDE No municipal campaign debate goes by without mention of the death of far-right activist Quentin Deranque, who was beaten to death by antifascist activists on February 14 in Lyon. The debate held in Lyon itself on February 24 saw heated exchanges between the four participants. The same dynamic played out in Marseille during the first – and perhaps only – televised debate bringing together the four main candidates for mayor on Thursday, February 19. “The half-hour on Quentin wasn’t even on the agenda… We wanted to talk about Marseille, but they took us for fools,” said the left-wing incumbent mayor, Benoît Payan, after the broadcast. Radical-left candidate Sébastien Delogu, whose party La France Insoumise (LFI) has ties with a group accused of taking part in the beating, tried to defuse the controversy from the outset by paying his respects to Deranque, while also recalling that, in 1995 in Marseille, a young man named …

‘Shaken’ CNN staffers say they fear what Paramount takeover would mean for newsroom

CNN employees reacted with alarm after Netflix abruptly pulled out of the bidding war for Warner Bros. Discovery, effectively clearing the way for a takeover of the 24/7 cable channel by Paramount Skydance, the media giant run by technology heir David Ellison. Seven current CNN employees who spoke to NBC News on Thursday night, hours after Netflix announced it would not try to match Paramount’s bid for WBD, expressed a combination of fear and concern. They described the mood inside the company as “shaken” and” depressing.” Paramount’s offer, formally signed into an agreement by WBD’s board Friday afternoon, still needs to go through Justice Department regulators. Democratic politicians and California’s attorney general have said they will also be looking closely at the deal. But if it is approved, Ellison — the son of Oracle technology mogul Larry Ellison, a close ally of President Donald Trump — stands to control two of the key pillars of the traditional news media: CNN and CBS News, home of “60 Minutes.” One CNN journalist who regularly appears on air …

Cuba’s economy and stability are shaken by the Venezuela crisis

Line at a gas station in Matanzas, Cuba, January 7, 2026. NORLYS PEREZ/REUTERS Cuba risks losing its primary ally as the United States tightens its grip on Venezuela. The alliance between Havana and Caracas, forged at the start of the century by former Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez (1999-2003) and his Cuban counterpart Fidel Castro (1976-2008), was military, political and economic. Although Cuba has always denied having security forces in Venezuela, at least 32 Cuban soldiers died under unclear circumstances during the abduction of the presidential couple, Nicolas Maduro and Cilia Flores, on January 3. “Except for a very small minority, no one in Cuba is rejoicing at the tragic events in Venezuela. There is a very strong attachment to sovereignty in Cuban society. The fear of losing an ally like Venezuela can only fuel anxiety among a population facing an unprecedented social crisis,” said Janette Habel, a researcher at the Institute of Advanced Studies on Latin America specializing in Cuban affairs. The island’s economy took a nosedive starting in 2016, along with that of Venezuela, …
