Guthrie, 54, has been absent from “Today” since Feb. 2, the day after learning her mother Nancy was abducted from her Tucson home. Her 84-year-old mother’s case, still being investigated by law enforcement, generated an outpouring of public affection for the co-host. Many media industry insiders expressed serious doubts over whether Guthrie would return to television before law enforcement determined what happened to Nancy Guthrie. But people close to Guthrie believe her grit and deep religious faith will provide her with the strength to move forward. Paramount’s Jeff Shell hit with $150-million fraud lawsuit by gambler

The high-stakes feud between Paramount Skydance President Jeff Shell and Las Vegas gambler and self-professed “fixer” Robert James “R.J.” Cipriani spilled into court on Monday. Cipriani filed a lawsuit against Shell on claims of fraud and eight other counts, alleging that he reneged on an oral agreement to develop an English-language version of a Spanish music show that streams on Roku TV. He is seeking $150 million in damages. In the 67-page lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, Cipriani claims that in exchange for providing “sophisticated, high-value crisis communications services, entirely without compensation” over 18 months, Shell had agreed to develop the show “Serenata De Las Estrellas” (Star Serenade), but failed to do so. Cipriani and his wife were to be named as co-executive producers. “This case arises from the oldest form of fraud: a powerful man took everything a less powerful man had to offer, promised to repay him, lied to him when he asked about it, and then refused to compensate him at all,” states the complaint. Representatives of Shell did …

Brittany Broski Says She’ll Bring Fangirl Energy as Vanity Fair Oscar Party Livestream Host

A few Oscars moments stick with Brittany Broski. The year Leonardo DiCaprio finally won best actor for The Revenant in 2016. Decades earlier, when Marlon Brando sent Native activist Sacheen Littlefeather to decline his 1973 best-actor trophy in protest of the film industry’s treatment of Native Americans. And as a documented Cillian Murphy fan, “Oppenheimer year, I was locked in,” Broski tells Vanity Fair of the 2024 ceremony, in which the Christopher Nolan film earned seven Oscars, including best picture, best actor for Murphy, and supporting actor for Robert Downey Jr. “When RDJ won that award?” Broski shakes her head at the memory, adding in the giddy, slightly exaggerated Southern twang familiar to her 20.1 million followers, “He’s my dad.” Broski is bringing her signature frenetic energy to the Vanity Fair Oscar Party 2026 on March 15, where she’ll host the livestream of star-studded red-carpet arrivals alongside fellow internet celebrities Quenlin Blackwell and Jake Shane. The Texas-born Broski parlayed a viral 2019 meme of her sampling some kombucha into a Super Bowl ad, a popular …

I wasn’t happy with Windows 11, so I replaced the entire shell

I wasn’t happy with Windows 11, so I replaced the entire shell

I know there is always a debate about whether to switch from Windows to something else. But the reality is that even if Windows isn’t the OS we wish it were, it’s a solid option, regardless. It’s fast, stable, and great for several daily workflows. Also, as far as convenience goes, it’s one of the best options. Personally, aside from privacy concerns, there is just one thing I wish were better: the Windows shell (desktop, taskbar, and Start menu). So, I decided to do what any tinkerer would do: fix it. In that attempt, I stumbled upon an open-source tool called Cairo Shell, and I think I am now much happier with Windows. Windows 11 kept interrupting my workflow The small frictions added up until I questioned explorer.exe Afam Onyimadu / MUO I always found the Windows Start menu a bit frustrating. I know the apps I like to have, so I’m not looking to Microsoft for new recommendations. I also found it very inconvenient to use the “Show more options” menu that appears after …

What Sparked Paramount’s Investigation of Jeff Shell

What Sparked Paramount’s Investigation of Jeff Shell

The high-stakes gambler who sparked an internal investigation and filed a whistleblower complaint against Jeff Shell had previously discussed a music reality show with him. R.J. Cipriani co-created and exec produced Roku’s Spanish-language series Serenata De Las Estrellas, in which Latin acts like Ozomatli and Los Lobos perform surprise mini-concerts for fans who’ve gone through tough times. He’d been introduced to Shell via their mutual attorney Patty Glaser, and he’d recently pitched the studio boss on picking up the English-language format of Serenata. After the discussion soured, Cipriani brought claims to the attention of Paramount about Shell. As THR previously revealed, the entertainment mogul is alleged to have improperly disclosed details about the timing, cost and structure of his public company’s $7.7 billion media rights deal with the Ultimate Fighting Championship, whose parent TKO Group Holdings jumped 10 percent following news of the pact. Notably, Glaser has been both Shell’s attorney as well as counsel representing Cipriani in business pertaining to Serenata, whose English-language version has been shopped as Star Serenade. In the current conflict, …

Nancy Mace on Friday said that Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick should testify to the House Oversight Committee to answer questions about his association with notorious sex predator Jeffrey Epstein. “Howard Lutnick should take questions from the Oversight committee,” Mace, R-S.C., said in an X post on Friday morning. Mace’s tweet responded to an X post that said the Department of Justice had removed from its database of Epstein-related documents a photo of Epstein standing in front of a man who “appears to be Howard Lutnick.” It is not known when the photo, which since has been restored to the DOJ’s public database, was taken. Indigenous communities in southern Brazil hunted large whales 5,000 years ago

Indigenous communities in southern Brazil hunted large whales 5,000 years ago

The first clue sits in a museum drawer, not on a windswept Arctic shore. It is a whale bone, marked and shaped by human hands. Around it are more bones, more tools, and a coastal story that reaches back 5,000 years. New research from the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the Department of Prehistory of the UAB says Indigenous communities in southern Brazil hunted large whales far earlier than scholars once believed. The work places active whaling in Babitonga Bay, in Brazil’s Santa Catarina state, about a thousand years before the earliest documented evidence from Arctic and North Pacific societies. If you have ever pictured early whaling as a Northern Hemisphere breakthrough, this study asks you to redraw the map. The researchers argue these coastal communities built specialized tools, planned strategies, and social systems that made large-whale hunting possible long before the timeline most textbooks imply. New Scientist recommends The Big Oyster: History on the half shell

New Scientist recommends The Big Oyster: History on the half shell

I am currently reading The Big Oyster: History on the half shell, a chronicle of New York City told through its renowned oyster beds. Even though I am a local, I was only vaguely aware of the city’s relationship with the molluscs. I knew there were efforts to boost the oyster population, but I was ignorant about how massive it once was. It was so bountiful that when Europeans arrived on the island in the early 1600s, they described oysters the size of their feet. The Lenape Indigenous people would feast on them, discarding the shells in huge piles that archaeologists would later call shell middens. Construction workers still happen upon the heaps when they are building subway tunnels or rail lines. By weaving together historical accounts, archaeological evidence and city records, journalist Mark Kurlansky details New York City’s evolution from a natural oasis to a concrete jungle. It is a fascinating perspective, and one that has reshaped how I see the city. Grace WadeReporter, New York Topics: Source link
