Its purpose has to do with making a prophetic alarm – a proclamation of what was to follow. There are two types of shofars used today: the small one is the ram’s horn, while the larger Yemenite shofar comes from an African antelope called the Kudu.  Note that “yôwbel“one of the Hebrew words for “trumpet” is also the word for “jubilee.” Scriptures teach us that the “Year of Jubilee” began with the sounding of the trumpet. 1998 marked the beginning of Israel’s first 50 year “Jubilee” since it became a nation in 1948.
