GRS/AP hide caption toggle caption GRS/AP NEW YORK — CBS News said Friday it will shut down its storied radio news service after nearly 100 years of operation, ending an era and blaming challenging economic times as the world moves on to digital sources and podcasts. Said longtime CBS News anchor Dan Rather: “It’s another piece of America that is gone.” When it went on the air in September 1927, the service was the precursor to the entire network, giving a youthful William S. Paley a start in the business. Famed broadcaster Edward R. Murrow’s rooftop reports during the Nazi bombing of London during World War II kept Americans listening anxiously. Today, CBS News Radio provides material to an estimated 700 stations across the country and is known best for its top-of-the-hour news roundups. The service will end on May 22, the network said Friday. The CBS Broadcast Center on 57th Street …

Cuba Shutters Beach Resorts As Fuel Crisis Spreads Economy-Wide

President Trump’s pressure campaign on Cuba is gaining serious momentum as the Caribbean island’s energy crisis deepens, unleashing rampant fuel shortages and prolonged power blackouts. The government rolled out new conservation measures late Friday to preserve energy, but large parts of the economy are already imploding. Bloomberg reports that Trump’s move to curb fuel shipments to Cuba is spilling over into the tourism sector, with energy shortages forcing two large beach resorts to shut down as early as this weekend. Here’s more from the outlet: At least two large beach resorts on Cayo Coco, on the northern coast of the Caribbean nation, will be closing as soon as this weekend due to gasoline shortages, employees reported Friday. A worker at Mojito Cayo Coco said the resort was shutting down because there wasn’t enough fuel for employees to get to work. Instead, about 200 guests will be transferred to Sol Cayo Coco about 30 miles away. The worker, who asked not to be identified for fear of retaliation, blamed Trump’s sanctions and said many of his …

Blue Origin shutters New Shepard rocket program to focus on moon lander development

WASHINGTON, Jan 30 : The space tourism rocket that blasted celebrities like Katy Perry and William Shatner to space is shuttering operations, at least for two years, Blue Origin said on Friday, winding down the company’s centerpiece space tourism program to sharpen its focus on building a moon lander for NASA. Blue Origin, owned by billionaire Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos, will “pause its New Shepard flights and shift resources to further accelerate development of the company’s human lunar capabilities,” the company said in a statement. Standing 60 feet tall, the reusable New Shepard rocket, with its gumdrop-shaped crew capsule on top, has launched dozens of paying passengers and research experiments from Texas across 38 brief, suborbital flights to the edge of space since 2021. Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp announced the decision internally to employees on Friday in an email that began, “I have some significant news to share with you,” according to a copy seen by Reuters. “New Shepard has achieved great success and will forever be our first step,” Limp said, adding “the decision to pause …

Veneklasen Gallery Appoints New Partners, Werner LA Space Shutters

Dealer Gordon VeneKlasen has released new details about his plans after separating from Michael Werner Gallery. After running Werner’s New York space for more than 30 years, VeneKlasen will take over that location, as well as Werner’s London space, under his own eponymous gallery, and promote two longtime employees to partners. As part of the agreement, the short-lived Los Angeles branch of Michael Werner Gallery will close. Justine Birbil, who oversaw global operations at Werner, and Kadee Robbins, who headed up Werner in London, have both been made partners at VeneKlasen. New York–based Birbil began working with VeneKlasen in 1988, when he was a director at Curt Marcus Gallery; he hired her at Michael Werner in 1993. NFT Platform Nifty Gateway Shutters Amid Market Collapse

Nifty Gateway, one of the earliest and most high-profile online marketplaces for non-fungible tokens (NFTs), announced it will close on February 23, citing sharply declining activity. The platform, which has already entered “withdrawal-only mode,” is advising users to move their assets before the deadline, after which they will no longer be able to buy, sell, or bid on NFTs, though withdrawals will still be possible. Founded in 2018 by twins Duncan and Griffin Cock Foster, Nifty Gateway was designed to make NFT transactions accessible via cryptocurrency or fiat. In 2019, it became the first acquisition of Gemini, the crypto exchange founded by Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss. At its height in 2021, the platform reported $300 million in gross merchandise value, boosted by a Sotheby’s partnership for a $17 million NFT drop by the artist Pak. Related Articles “The Nifty team pioneered dozens of innovative drops and creative experiences,” Gemini said in its announcement, expressing gratitude to artists and collectors for joining the platform. The NFT boom, though, has since collapsed. Trading volumes have tanked from …
