The internet was set ablaze this week when a TikTok user filmed what appeared to be disgraced billionaire and convicted abuser Jeffrey Epstein driving down a highway in South Florida. Jeffrey, who trafficked women and girls to elites for years throughout the ’90s and ’00s, died in 2019 inside his jail cell in Manhattan. His death was ruled a suicide, but conspiracy theorists believe he may still be alive and living a normal life. A video posted by TikTok user amposey27 went mega viral after he filmed a man driving in Florida with similar facial features to Jeffrey. “Ummm…Epstein is alive. Epstein is alive!” he was heard saying, as the camera focused on the man driving the convertible in a navy polo tee and white backwards cap. “Epstein out here in South Florida,” read the caption. This year, some countries will commence the month of fasting on Thursday, February 19, whereas other countries may begin it a day earlier. Similarly, at the end of Ramadan, different communities will celebrate Eid on different dates. The reason for this lies in the nature of the lunar visibility calendar – the new crescent Moon is not always visible everywhere on the same date. The prophet Muhammad is reported to have said: “Observe fast on sighting it [the crescent] and break fast on sighting it [the next crescent] – but if the sky is cloudy for you, then complete the number [30 days].” In modern times, some countries such as Turkey have implemented calendar reforms, removing the act of monthly visual sightings of the crescent. LONDON (RNS) — The Greenwich Royal Observatory is an ancient observatory of the stars and night sky, and home to Greenwich Mean Time, historically the worldwide basis for timekeeping, based on its prime meridian. This week, its astronomers will be looking to the heavens not to study the stars, but to help people get closer to God. On Wednesday (Feb. 18), the Royal Observatory will join forces with the New Crescent Society, a Muslim moon-sighting organization, to look for the crescent moon that marks the start of Ramadan — the Muslim period of fasting running up to the festival of Eid, expected this year to be on March 20. Although Ramadan is set to start on Wednesday, it officially begins only when the first sighting of the crescent moon takes place. The Royal Observatory will be streaming online, live from Greenwich, discussing Islam and astronomy, while astronomers on its roof keep their telescope trained on the night sky for the silvery sliver of the crescent moon. The second episode of the Netflix docuseries Encounters (“Believers”) features the mass UFO sighting and close encounter of the third kind alleged to have occurred at Ariel School in Zimbabwe on September 16, 1994. We hear the familiar description from some of the now-adult witnesses of seeing a glinting light beyond their playground, which some children believed was a spaceship, and of a strange figure with large black eyes others believed was an alien. The absent teachers, who were inside at the time, didn’t believe them, nor did some of their parents. Archival clips of some of the children describing what they saw are intercut. They’re bright-eyed and utterly compelling. Then we’re introduced to a new antagonist, a former pupil who appears to ridicule the whole thing.
