The significant but overlooked risk factor for developing breast cancer

Understanding what breast density is, how it affects breast cancer risk and what it means for screening can help women make informed decisions about their health. Breast density refers to the proportions of glandular and connective tissue compared to fatty tissue in the breast, as seen on a mammogram. Simply put, dense breasts have more glandular and fibrous tissue and less fat. On a mammogram, both dense tissue and tumours appear white, making it harder to detect abnormalities in women with dense breasts. This masking effect can lead to cancers being missed during routine screening, which is why breast density is not just a risk factor for developing breast cancer, but also for having it go undetected until it is more advanced. Artnet Makes Significant Layoffs Following Consolidation with Artsy

Following yesterday’s news that Artsy and Artnet had been brought under the same leadership, the latter online art marketplace has laid off dozens of employees. Sources told ARTnews that the layoffs particularly impacted Artnet’s editorial arm, Artnet News, one of the most widely read art publications in the US and Europe. Among the senior reporters who are no longer at Artnet News are Sarah Cascone and Eileen Kinsella, both of whom were on staff at the publication for more than a decade. Related Articles Andrew Russeth, who previously served as executive editor of ARTnews, will reportedly now serve as the interim editor of Artnet News, which has historically operated out of New York, London, and Berlin. Also severely impacted, according to those sources, was the Berlin team that helps facilitate Artnet’s efforts to sell art online. In addition to publishing news articles and vending art listed by gallery partners, Artnet runs a database that allows users to track the results of sales held at major auction houses across the globe. Getty Museum Acquires Two Significant Dutch Still Lifes

The Getty Museum in Los Angeles has acquired two Dutch still lifes of note—including one that the institution said it “has been seeking over two decades,” according to a press release announcing the news. Jan Davidsz. de Heem’s Glass Vase with Flowers and Fruit (ca. 1673–74) is one of nine similar paintings that demonstrate the artist’s “skill of illusionism and accurate botanical and entomological observations,” per the release, and was unrecorded until it came out of a private collection in Germany in 2022. The arrangement includes flame tulips (“still a highly prized flower in the Netherlands”) as well as plums, berries, roses, morning glory, milk thistle, and honeysuckle. Related Articles Look closely and you will also see insects going about their business at minuscule scale. “Butterflies and caterpillars, associated with metamorphosis, represented the transience of life and the soul freed from greed and desire,” the Getty’s release reads. “And, according to literary tradition, ants were respected as hardworking and symbolized diligence and frugality.” De Heem’s painting is already on view in the Getty Center’s West …

Apple Preparing ‘Most Significant Overhaul in the iPhone’s History’

Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman has high expectations for Apple’s first foldable iPhone. In his Power On newsletter today, he said the foldable iPhone will be “the most significant overhaul in the iPhone’s history.” “iPhone 4, iPhone 6 and iPhone X were clearly a big deal, but this is a whole new design,” he said. Like Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7, the foldable iPhone will reportedly open up like a book, providing users with a large inner screen for watching videos, playing games, and multitasking. iOS 27 is expected to be optimized for the foldable iPhone, allowing for apps to be open side-by-side and for other iPad-like multitasking functionality. A few months ago, a report said the foldable iPhone will be equipped with a 7.7-inch inner display, and a 5.3-inch outer display. It was initially rumored that the device would have a virtually “crease-free” inner display, but it was later reported that Apple is using technology that “reduces the crease without eliminating it entirely.” Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects the foldable iPhone to have two …

Oscars announce significant change for upcoming ceremony away from Hollywood

Announced Thursday, this significant shift coincides with the telecast’s move from ABC to YouTube and marks a 10-year agreement with AEG, operators of the L.A. Live complex, 14.5 kilometres away. The decision is surprising, given the Academy specifically developed the Dolby Theatre to host the Oscars. It has served as the ceremony’s consistent home since 2002, barring a scaled-down event at Union Station in 2021. This was the longest continuous residency; awards previously moved between various Los Angeles hotels before settling into theatres in the mid-1940s. The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, a downtown fine arts facility, home to the LA Opera, became synonymous with the Oscars, hosting from 1968 to 1986. It then alternated with …
