Catherine Zeta-Jones, 56, reveals her daily diet for glowing skin and a toned figure

Catherine Zeta-Jones continues to defy the years, with her radiant skin and enviable figure prompting one big question: what’s her secret? As it turns out, the Oscar-winning star’s approach to food is all about balance – with a structured weekday routine and a more indulgent, family-focused weekend. The 56-year-old has offered a rare glimpse into her daily diet, revealing how she fuels her body while maintaining that signature glow. Her mornings begin early, often in what she describes as a “super quiet house,” where she starts the day with a French press coffee before taking her dog out. © Getty ImagesCatherine enjoys her food while keeping treats to weekends Breakfast is non-negotiable, but it changes with the seasons. In winter, she opts for a comforting bowl of porridge topped with brown sugar, bananas and blueberries. When the weather warms up, she switches to a lighter option: non-fat vanilla yogurt with granola, blueberries and raspberries. “I’m a three meals a day kind of girl,” she told Harper’s Bazaar, noting that she usually waits until around 8am …

From eczema to psoriasis: what’s really causing your itchy skin – and how to fix it

From eczema to psoriasis: what’s really causing your itchy skin – and how to fix it

It’s easy to brush off an itch as something minor, but the truth is it can really take a toll on your quality of life – especially when it becomes a chronic issue with no end in sight.  The first step is getting to the bottom of what’s causing your itching, but from there you can look into how to solve it – and that doesn’t necessarily mean medication.  A pharmacist told us about some sure-fire natural treatments to try, including tried-and-tested home remedies that aren’t just myths. According to pharmacist Pilar Pérez, pruritus (the medical term for chronic itching) can be triggered by a variety of factors, ranging from simple surface irritation to more complex internal health issues – but thankfully, there are remedies that can help. The expert highlights the following common culprits of chronic itching: Dry skin (xerosis): Often the simplest and most common cause. Atopic eczema: A long-term inflammatory condition that leads to dry, irritated skin and intense itching. Psoriasis: An autoimmune condition that results in itchy, scaly patches (plaques) on the …

The nightly habits a dermatologist recommends for menopausal skin – and the one ‘myth’ that is actually true

The nightly habits a dermatologist recommends for menopausal skin – and the one ‘myth’ that is actually true

When it comes to skincare, I’ve noticed my friends generally fall into one of two camps: those who follow their night-time routine religiously, and those who collapse into bed without so much as a face wipe – makeup and all. Which group do you belong to? I hope you’re in the first, because if you’re in the second, I’m afraid I have a bit of a wake-up call: you’re not just neglecting your skin, you’re fast-tracking the ageing process quite unnecessarily. Following a solid evening routine is more than just a bit of self-care, it is also the most effective way to keep your complexion healthy, glowing and hydrated.  Did you know that your skin actually “works” overtime while you sleep, making it far more receptive to products? During the night, your skin enters a crucial regeneration phase, meaning a well-thought-out routine is your best ally for waking up fresh-faced, no matter what your age. To cut through the noise, I caught up with dermatologist Dr Natalia Jiménez, who walked me through the essentials of …

An implant under the skin could replace insulin injections

An implant under the skin could replace insulin injections

A small device implanted just beneath the skin, roughly the size of a large postage stamp and weighing about two grams, kept diabetic mice and rats healthy for three months without a single dose of immunosuppressive medication. That result, published in the journal Device by researchers at MIT, represents a meaningful step toward something diabetes patients have long needed: a way to receive transplanted insulin-producing cells without the drugs that prevent the immune system from destroying them. The implanted device has a built-in mechanism for keeping living pancreatic islet cells alive. The substrate material protects the transplanted pancreatic islet cells by allowing them access to a continuous supply of oxygen generated within the substrate itself. This process occurs without the need for complex systems to supply oxygen. Instead, it uses moisture present within the body as the source for generating the oxygen needed for the islet cells. The concept of islet cell transplantation is not new. Physicians have known for many years that taking insulin-producing cells from a donor can restore normal glucose control. A …

I asked former classmates about it, and they told me they never noticed my skin being bad. “I was shocked. I had always believed I would be remembered as the girl with terrible acne.” Skin dysmorphia is an increasingly recognised condition, where the sufferer looks in the mirror and believes there are imperfections all over their face. This can lead to an obsessive …

Small microneedle skin patch tracks body’s response to disease, vaccines, and treatment

Small microneedle skin patch tracks body’s response to disease, vaccines, and treatment

A small patch, no larger than a bandage, may soon change how doctors understand the immune system. Instead of relying on blood draws or surgical biopsies, scientists have created a device that listens directly to immune activity in the skin. The technology, developed by researchers at The Jackson Laboratory and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, offers a new way to track how the body responds to disease, vaccines, and treatment. The study introduces a microneedle patch that can painlessly collect immune cells and inflammatory signals from the skin. Within minutes, it can detect early signs of inflammation. Within hours, it gathers specialized immune cells that once required invasive procedures to study. “Traditionally, studying some of the most important immune cells in the body requires a skin biopsy or blood draws. Because many of these cells live and respond in tissues like the skin, accessing them has meant invasive procedures,” said Sasan Jalili, a biomedical engineer and immunologist at The Jackson Laboratory. “We’ve shown we can capture them painlessly and noninvasively instead. This is especially important …

But how do the purported benefits of red light therapy – also known as photobiomodulation – align with the science? Well, maybe more than you might believe. “I thought this was just the latest fad to get people to spend their money,” Dr. Rachel Reynolds, interim chair of the Department of Dermatology at Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, said …

Stabilising hypochlorous acid for better skin

Stabilising hypochlorous acid for better skin

Avantamine offers an innovative solution to stabilise hypochlorous acid (HOCl), enabling higher concentrations and longer-lasting effectiveness on the skin. Whenever your body is attacked by a pathogen (bacteria, fungus or virus) and develops a skin infection, your immune system triggers your white blood cells to produce a compound called hypochlorous acid. Hypochlorous acid selectively kills pathogens, promotes tissue repair, and then breaks down harmlessly. Our skin responds perfectly to it because nature evolved this particular pathogen-killing compound to protect us. It’s the ideal antiseptic. Unsurprisingly, hypochlorous acid (HOCl) skincare products are popping up on store shelves everywhere in sprays, toners, mists, and gels to treat eczema, itching, acne and more. Many of these skin ailments have a pathogen, usually bacteria, that is either driving or complicating the condition. Acne, for example, is often the result of, or aggravated by, the presence of the bacteria Cutibacterium acnes. HOCl is an oxidising antiseptic that kills bacteria just like benzoyl peroxide, one of the most common acne treatments. The equivalent efficacy of HOCl and benzoyl peroxide for mild …

17 Best Wrinkle Creams of 2026 for Smoother, Clearer Skin

Over-the-counter versus prescription: Lastly, there are limits to what you can achieve with over-the-counter products. Dr. Shah says that proactively seeking out professional treatments, rather than waiting for wrinkles to form and skin to sag, can also pay dividends. Prevention will always be easier than treatment. “And then I wouldn’t discount having a routine to get procedures done,” Dr. Shah says. “A lot of people get procedures done, almost reactionary, to an issue, right? Like, they develop a wrinkle, or they develop a dark spot, and they go in. But there is something to be said about getting regular [procedures]. Not to the point where it’s taking over your life, but going to a dermatologist and getting a laser treatment once a year, which really can make a big difference to your skin health, or doing micro-needling, you know, every six months, or picking something and just having some routine.” Why We Wrote This Aging skin is a natural part of living, and while some people take it in stride, others hope to slow down …

Sali Hughes on beauty: finally, a dry skin remedy with a touch of elegance | Skincare

I could write a thesis on derma body lotions, but it would be as boring to read as they are to use. You know the ones – rows of near-identical white and blue family moisturisers for extra dry skin, smelling of nothing, feeling like lard and standing unhappily away from the fun aisles full of fruity, silky and whipped creams costing half as much. The Guardian’s journalism is independent. We will earn a commission if you buy something through an affiliate link. Learn more. The joyless, pricey pharmaceutical aisle is where we dryness-, cracked-, eczema- or sensitivity-prone skin types must shop, because a vat full of something more elegant would barely lubricate an elbow. For us, I deliver good news: Mixa has landed from France, 102 years late. You may remember its UK launch and swift withdrawal some years ago (because of something boring about distribution). Now it’s back, in supermarkets, chemists and online – and it’s marvellous. double quotation mark Mixa’s fine, ungreasy textures will be a pleasant surprise to those of us for whom …
