Snowstorm in northeastern US leaves 40 million people under weather warnings

People walk through the snow on February 23, 2026, in New York City. RYAN MURPHY / AFP More than 40 million people were under weather warnings in the northeastern United States on Monday, February 23, as a winter storm dumped shin-deep snow and officials in New York enforced a citywide travel ban. The so-called “Nor’easter” pummeled the region overnight, disrupting flights and leaving hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses without power. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani ordered nonessential drivers off the road until midday Monday and shut down schools. Authorities in neighboring New Jersey and Rhode Island issued similar travel restrictions. The National Weather Service said snowfall would ebb overnight, but warned that strong winds would still create blizzard conditions in some areas. As of 4 pm local time, more than 5,600 flights in or out of the US had been canceled and hundreds more delayed, according to tracking service FlightAware. The three major airports in New York, as well as Boston Logan Airport, saw the most cancellations. By Monday lunchtime, Rhode Island’s TF …

Zohran Mamdani Wore Custom Carhartt to Tackle His First Snowstorm as Mayor

We imagine there are quite a few perks associated with being mayor of New York City. For Eric Adams, it was alleged unsanctioned luxury trips to Turkey. For current top dog Zohran Mamdani, it appears to be an arsenal of very sick jackets. This came in handy over the weekend, when the northeast was hit by a massive snowstorm—the first weather emergency Mamdani has had to face since taking office on New Year’s Day (in a Kartik Research tie, by the way). In the lead up to the storm, Mamdani was seen at various press conferences wearing conspicuously embroidered outerwear for various New York City agencies. There was the green techy “Department of Sanitation” jacket he wore when he announced the city’s preparations for the incoming onslaught of snow, wind, and freezing cold weather during a Saturday press conference at the Spring Street Salt Shed. Then …

This Mega Snowstorm Will Be a Test for the US Supply Chain

This Mega Snowstorm Will Be a Test for the US Supply Chain

Here it comes. Up to two thirds of the US is facing down the threat of serious snow, cold, and ice this weekend, with the potential to snarl roads (and the businesses that depend on them) from Texas up to New York City. At this point, grocery stores, logistics experts, warehouse operators, and trucking companies have been prepping for days. Still, the effects on the supply chain—and the retail store shelves that depend on them—are yet to be determined. On one hand, this is winter business as usual. Snowstorms happen every year, and the freight industry has a playbook. “If you’re a retailer, this happens all the time,” says Chris Caplice, the chief scientist at the transportation management firm DAT Freight & Analytics. “For people in the supply chain, this is just another Tuesday.” On the other, the places where this storm is happening, and its breadth, pose an extra challenge. “This one’s kinda tough, because you don’t have a lot of snow storms hitting the states that this one is hitting,” says Chris Long, …
