Politics Home | Top PM Aide Darren Jones “Sounding Out Support” For Potential Leadership Run

Darren Jones in Downing Street for a Cabinet meeting, October 2024 (Alamy) 3 min read2 hr Exclusive: Chief secretary to the Prime Minister Darren Jones has sparked suspicion among colleagues that he is quietly sounding out support for a future leadership bid of his own, PoliticsHome understands. While taking the mood of the parliamentary party amid growing calls for Keir Starmer to resign, Jones has been interpreted by colleagues as privately gauging support for his own prospects of becoming Prime Minister. A source close to Jones said he had been calling MPs on behalf of No 10 but had not raised his own leadership prospects and remains supportive of the Prime Minister. However, two other sources have told PoliticsHome that the discussions had taken into account Jones’ own leadership prospects. As Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and chief secretary to the PM, Jones was the government spokesperson on the media round this morning. He denied that it was “all over” for the Prime Minister today but did not rule out the possibility he …

Why America’s Catholic Bishops Started Sounding Liberal

Why America’s Catholic Bishops Started Sounding Liberal

Not so long ago, when U.S. Catholic leaders said something political, they tended to sound like conservatives. American bishops’ most prominent policy statements focused on three issues: same-sex marriage, contraception, and—above all—abortion. Their frequently stated opposition to all three put them at odds with not just the left but also many Catholics. It even created tension with Rome. Since Donald Trump’s reelection, however, the Church in the United States has been sounding more liberal. Its teaching hasn’t changed, but the president’s second term has shifted the bishops’ attention. The most urgent political concern for America’s Catholic leaders is no longer abortion; it’s immigration. The issue has featured in their agenda for a while. After all, the Catechism of the Catholic Church states that wealthy countries should welcome refugees and economic migrants “to the extent they are able.” But now immigration dominates U.S. Catholic leaders’ public messaging. In November, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops published a rare “special message” decrying the Trump administration’s “indiscriminate mass deportation.” The day of Trump’s State of the Union address, …

Nothing’s first over-ear headphones are as ambitious, polarizing, and divisive a product as you’d expect from the brand. The writing was always on the wall — from the moment the London-based tech company debuted with a pair of earbuds with a transparent design.  Yet, somehow, I found myself taking a step back when I unboxed the Headphone 1. To an extent, Headphone 1 represent the pinnacle of Nothing: a playful, finely tuned pair of headphones with Teenage Engineering influence, a seamless software experience that leaves no iOS or Android user behind, and a feel and finish that could split any room into two.  …

Nietzsche’s Riddle: Why Did Zarathustra Credit “Sounding Brass” for His Greatest Victory?

Nietzsche’s Riddle: Why Did Zarathustra Credit “Sounding Brass” for His Greatest Victory?

Published: Dec 15, 2025written by Simon Lea, PhD Philosophy   Nietzsche claimed that his most important work was Thus Spoke Zarathustra. Here, the titular character triumphs over a monstrous creature in a life-or-death battle, and in doing so, he discovers the secret of the eternal return. The concept of eternal recurrence is fundamental to Nietzsche’s philosophy. When Zarathustra triumphs, he credits his victory to ‘sounding brass.’ In a short section of the text, he mentions this idea three times. However, no one in secondary literature seems very sure what it is.   Friedrich Nietzsche’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra Portrait of Friedrich Nietzsche by Friedrich Hermann Hartmann, c. 1875. Source: Wikimedia Commons   Of all the texts produced by Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900), the most important to him was Thus Spoke Zarathustra. Written between 1883 and 1885, it is a poetical work published in four volumes. The book sold poorly. Of the thousand copies initially printed, fewer than eighty were sold in the first year. He fared slightly better the following year, managing to sell just under ninety …
