4 Android apps I keep on a spare phone to turn it into a useful home gadget

There’s a drawer, bin, or shelf in your home with the old tech products you rarely use but can’t justify throwing away. If you’re anything like me, it might include a handful of spare Android phones. They come in handy if a flagship phone is lost or breaks, giving you a backup until your primary device is repaired or replaced. However, if you wait to make use of your spare Android phone until a need arises, it could rot away in a junk drawer forever. That’s why I proactively put my extra Android devices to use as a smart home helper. With a few free apps, you can turn your Android phone into a smart home controller, home security camera, media server player, or digital toolbox. It quickly becomes an indispensable companion that can be mounted at your bedside table or on your desk, replacing a dedicated smart screen. This is how I did it — and how you can too. Only got five minutes to spare? Try this kettlebell workout to build strength and get your heart pumping

When I’m trying to squeeze a short workout into a busy day, it can feel like I spend longer choosing a workout than actually doing it. Article continues below You may like When she has just five minutes to exercise—and wants to get the most out of that time—she does a single set of timed kettlebell exercises, to get the most bang for her buck. I’m a trainer with a history of injury-prone knees—when I have five minutes spare I use this simple gym ball routine to help protect them

The hamstrings and glutes play an unsung role in protecting your knees. That was the major lesson I took away from my physiotherapist after tearing both anterior cruciate ligaments on the soccer field—in separate incidents in my late 20s and early 30s. Running down the back of the thighs, from the hips to the knees, the hamstrings help to stabilize the back of the knee joint to prevent hyperextension. Article continues below You may like At the same time, they work as shock absorbers to protect the ligaments and cartilage, and they also help you decelerate at high speed. Meanwhile, the glutes, which form a major part of the posterior chain system connected along the back of your body, help to stabilize the pelvis and keep your hips aligned to stop your knee caving inward under strain. I’ve tried countless ways to strengthen these two muscle groups over the years, but there is one exercise that has stuck with me: gym ball hamstring curls. Now, whenever I have a few minutes spare at the end …

Shingles vaccines can spare you a painful illness : NPR

Pain and itching can be early symptoms of shingles. triocean/iStockphoto/Getty Images hide caption toggle caption triocean/iStockphoto/Getty Images Chad Bernhard knows the pain of shingles firsthand. The New York City-based audio instructor was in his mid-30s when he noticed a rash on the left side of his body and around part of his chest and his back. It itched and it wasn’t long before the itching turned into a sharp, stabbing pain, “kind of like the whole side of your body was being stung by hornets, continuously,” he says. Shingles is a re-activation of the varicella-zoster virus that causes chicken pox. That virus lies dormant in our bodies for years after an infection, lurking in the root of a nerve. When it emerges again, the virus inflames that nerve, says Dr. Maria Carney, a geriatrician and executive director of the Northwell Aging Institute on Long Island. “And then it breaks through the skin and you get blisters and itching and burning and it can be very, very painful.” Around a third of Americans will get shingles …

I turned a spare Android into a Wi-Fi extender and it fixed my dead zones

I turned a spare Android into a Wi-Fi extender and it fixed my dead zones

I have a few Android phones lying around at home. Some are still in great working condition, while others are just waiting to be sold. Instead of letting the good ones gather dust, I decided to put one of them to better use. My home Wi-Fi is generally reliable, but there are a few annoying dead zones that always seem to test my patience. Those are the areas I wanted to fix. So, I took one of my spare Android phones and turned it into a makeshift Wi-Fi extender. It’s not something I thought I’d ever do, but it turned out to be a simple way to improve connectivity exactly where I needed it most. How a Music Streaming CEO Built an Open-Source Global Threat Map in His Spare Time

How a Music Streaming CEO Built an Open-Source Global Threat Map in His Spare Time

Elie Habib doesn’t work in the defense or intelligence industries. Instead, he runs Anghami, one of the Middle East’s largest music streaming platforms. But as missiles began flying across the region, a side project he coded earlier this year suddenly became something bigger: an open-source dashboard people around the world were using to track the war in real time. The engineer turned executive built the system, called World Monitor, to make sense of chaotic geopolitical news. Instead, it went viral. Habib’s day job revolves around licensing deals and streaming metrics. But during a stretch of increasingly chaotic geopolitical news, he started building a tool to make sense of it. “I’m an engineer by training, and I hold myself to a discipline of continuously learning new technologies regardless of my CEO title,” Habib tells WIRED. The idea emerged as headlines began colliding in ways that felt impossible to follow. “The news became genuinely hard to parse,” he says. “Iran, Trump’s decisions, financial markets, critical minerals, tensions compounding from every direction simultaneously.” Screenshots of worldmonitor.com COURTSEY OF …

“Spare me your fake f**king outrage”: Newsom lashes out at Hannity over allegations of racism

California Gov. Gavin Newsom railed against accusations of racism from right-wing commentators on Monday, calling their concern “fake f**king outrage.” The mini-controversy around Newsom came after he had a sit down with Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens. Speaking on his new memoir, which details the governor’s struggle with dyslexia, Newsom laid on an everyman schtick. “I’m not trying to impress you. I’m just trying to impress upon you, I am like you. I am no better than you. I am a 960 SAT guy,” he said. “And I’m not trying to offend anyone, [or] act all there if you got 940. But literally a 960 SAT guy. You have never seen me read a speech, because I cannot read a speech.” Conservative outlets took Newsom’s “like you” assertion to be racially motivated, extrapolating from their that Newsom assumed the mayor of Atlanta, who is Black, could not read. Rapper and recent Donald Trump booster Nicki Minaj said as much on social media. “His way of bonding with black ppl is to tell them how stupid he …

Brooklyn Beckham ‘set to follow in Harry’s footsteps with bombshell memoir’ | Celebrity News | Showbiz & TV

The bombshell book shared various new claims and accusations about the royals, particularly taking aim at King Charles, Prince William and Queen Camilla. Speaking of Brooklyn, the Daily Mail has now reported that a deal is “firmly in play”. Spare, which was released by Penguin Random House, sold more than 467,000 copies in its first week in the UK and became the fastest-selling non-fiction title in history. A source has said: “He’s seen how well the book did for Harry. Same publisher. Same idea of finally telling your truth. That’s not a coincidence.” David and Victoria are said to be aware of what is at stake, having seen the fallout between Harry and his family. The source added: “They know they have to be careful. If they push him, if they deny it publicly or hit back, it only makes him more inclined to go further. “They’ve learned from the mistakes of others. This is a game of chess.” The Duke of Sussex’s feud with his family escalated following his exit from royal duties in …

Exact amount Prince Harry got paid for writing memoir Spare revealed | Royal | News

Prince Harry published his memoir Spare three years ago now, sending shockwaves around the world with the explosive claims inside. While the book was likely not best appreciated by the Royal Family, who found themselves the subject of much criticism, it was no doubt appreciated by Harry and his publisher.  The Duke of Sussex is understood to have made quite a hefty paycheck from the memoir, with his earnings believed to be around £22million ($27 27million). This would have been a big success for Harry and his publisher, Penguin Random House, especially as the hardback was quick to become the UK’s fastest-selling non-fiction book ever. While Harry has never confirmed how much the book made him, the Daily Mail reported that the Duke is believed to have received a £16million ($20million) advance as part of a £32million ($40million) four-book deal in June 2021. The rest of Harry’s earnings were then estimated by author Richard Osman, who used his own knowledge of the industry to estimate how much he believes the Duke made from his memoir. …
