Trump’s FCC eyes new ways to squeeze the TV networks

Trump’s FCC eyes new ways to squeeze the TV networks

Conservative television broadcasters are getting bigger under Donald Trump — and thanks to his top communications regulator, they may get enhanced power to mute the president’s critics. The Federal Communications Commission’s approval of a $6.2 billion merger between the TV station owners Nexstar and Tegna is one step toward agency chair Brendan Carr’s goal of boosting local broadcasters’ market heft, a shift that can help them counter the programming decisions of networks such as NBC and ABC. For his next move, Carr is considering ways to make it easier for local stations to preempt network programs without triggering breach-of-contract penalties, he told POLITICO after the FCC’s March 26 meeting. “There’s a very healthy feedback loop when the local broadcasters could not just communicate their concerns to the national programmers but if need be, actually preempt,” said Carr, who has repeatedly expressed a desire to return to an era when stations had greater leverage against the networks. “I think we were better off. We’ve lost that.” FCC spokespeople didn’t respond to a request for comment this week about …

EU sanctions more Russian banks to squeeze Putin’s war economy – POLITICO

EU sanctions more Russian banks to squeeze Putin’s war economy – POLITICO

The sanctions also include four banks from Kyrgyzstan, Laos and Azerbaijan, in a bid to crack down on sanction-busting strategies and efforts to pay for Russian oil and gas through the back door. EU businesses are also banned from dealing with Russian companies that handle or exchange cryptocurrencies. The list of sanctioned Russian banks now extends to 70 lenders. The sanctions make it much harder for foreign banks to handle international trade, especially as they will be prohibited from using SWIFT, a financial messaging system used to communicate payment instructions across the world. The EU is also curbing exports of a few high-tech goods to Kyrgyzstan, a Central Asian country with strong economic and political ties to Russia. Metal-working machines and radio equipment may no longer be shipped to Kyrgyzstan after customs data showed clear evidence of circumvention. It is the first time the EU is using the so-called anti-circumvention tool. The Kyrgyz government has vowed it will, in turn, ban some exports to Russia. The two sides will monitor trade in other sensitive goods …

Chelsea squeeze past Villa to keep faint WSL title hopes alive

Chelsea squeeze past Villa to keep faint WSL title hopes alive

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN, March 29 : Reigning champions Chelsea needed a late goal from Sjoeke Nuesken to see off Aston Villa on Sunday, eventually winning 4-3 at their home ground of Kingsmeadow to keep their very remote hopes of a seventh WSL title in a row alive.  The win moves Chelsea up to second place on 40 points, nine behind leaders Manchester City, with both sides having played 19 of their 22 league games. Though they still have a theoretical chance of winning the league, Chelsea would need to win their remaining three games while City, who have only dropped seven points, would have to lose all of theirs. Those slim title hopes looked set to evaporate completely against Villa as the visitors took an early lead through Chasity Grant, but three goals in an eight-minute spell from Sam Kerr, Naomi Girma and Lauren James put Chelsea back in the driving seat.  However, Chelsea’s defensive flaws this season were once again exposed as Villa battled back to level thanks to two quick-fire goals from Kirsty Hanson. …

The AI Race Is Pressuring Utilities to Squeeze More From Europe’s Power Grids

The AI Race Is Pressuring Utilities to Squeeze More From Europe’s Power Grids

European countries are racing to bring new data centers online as AI labs across the globe continue to demand more compute. The primary limiting factor is energy—and specifically, the ability to move it. Though Europe is on track to generate enough energy, utilities experts say, grid operators broadly lack the infrastructure needed to transport it to where it needs to go. That’s throttling grid capacity and, by extension, the number of new power-hungry data centers that can connect without risking blackouts. National Grid, which operates the transmission network in England and Wales, says that proposed data centers representing more than 30 gigawatts (GW) of power demand are awaiting connection to its grid, equal to two thirds the peak demand of Great Britain. Even accounting for the likelihood that some of those data centers will never be built, there is currently not enough room to accommodate them. The wait for permission to plug in is causing some data center projects to collapse, undermining European ambitions to capture a share of the hundreds of billions of dollars …

Trump Oil Squeeze Chokes Cuba’s Tourism

Trump Oil Squeeze Chokes Cuba’s Tourism

VARADERO BEACH, Cuba, Feb 18 (Reuters) – Cuba’s Varadero peninsula is a postcard of a tropical paradise: turquoise waters, powder-white sand and palm trees. But the resort’s beaches, once crowded with tourists enjoying the sand and sunshine, began to clear out shortly after Cuba announced on February 8 it was running out of jet fuel. And they may not be coming back anytime soon. A Reuters survey of hotel and travel companies, airlines and on-island tourism industry workers found virtually every sector suddenly crippled by the fuel shortage. That could sound a death knell for an already hobbled industry vital to what remains of Cuba’s devastated ‌economy. Air Canada, WestJet and Transat – the top carriers from Canada, ‌the largest source of visitors to Cuba – have announced they are suspending flights to Cuba. That will lead to the cancellation of as many as 1,709 flights through April, according to analytics firm Cirium, a disruption likely to slash visitor numbers by the hundreds of thousands during the peak northern hemisphere winter season. Russia, the third-largest …

Layoffs loom at the British Council as budget squeeze hits overseas programs – POLITICO

Layoffs loom at the British Council as budget squeeze hits overseas programs – POLITICO

The Council has asked the government to relieve the financial pressure of the loan and declining grants, requesting an extra £20 million in annual funding. Its chief executive warned last year that the organization might have to sell assets to survive, and that dozens of country operations were at risk.  A similar process has unfolded at the BBC World Service, often cited as another standard bearer of British soft power. The BBC said in a statement this week that the service is facing hundreds of millions of pounds in cuts in the next three years. ‘Detaching from foreign engagement‘ “The axe has finally fallen,” said one British Council staffer whose role is expected to go. “It’s going to be a bloodbath, and we are not going to go quietly.” Italy is expected to be especially hard hit. Of 150 roles in the country, 120 are “in scope” — about 80 percent of the workforce. Plans in a European Works Council consultation pack emailed to staff indicate that in Italy the entire teaching division would close …

4 ways to squeeze extra performance out of a budget Android tablet

4 ways to squeeze extra performance out of a budget Android tablet

Tablets are a genuinely great piece of hardware to have in the home. While some folks may scoff at the thought of using something that’s basically just an enlarged phone without calling capabilities, they’re great for a plethora of different things. Watching your favorite shows or movies, playing games, and even using them for video calls is a great thing. But a budget tablet can sometimes cause more headaches than it’s worth. I’ve been using a Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+ since 2024 at this point, and recently, it’s started to get on the slower side. The tablet still has a fantastic screen and excellent audio, and I’d love to keep using it for the foreseeable future. I figured I should start tweaking things to make it run smoother, and these little tricks have breathed some new life into my tablet. Try running a minimal launcher Something like Niagara or KISS can make the interface much smoother Credit: Shaun Cichacki/MUO When using a budget tablet, one of the most cumbersome areas of navigation is using the standard …

The Only Short Book You Need to Squeeze In at Year’s End

The Only Short Book You Need to Squeeze In at Year’s End

My Sister the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite In the span of 240 pages, you learn everything you need to know about sisters Korede and Ayoola only to realize you didn’t know them as well as you thought. In sharp, sardonic prose, Braithwaite brings these two opposites to life. Ayoola is a bright, shiny, peppy young woman leaving a bloody trail of suitors behind her with Korede, her beleaguered older sister, left to clean up her little sister’s messes. But hard-working, responsible Korede has needs and desires too. I’m a sucker for books that explore relationships between sisters. Sisterhood can produce a bond both deep and divisive. Braithwaite plays this dynamic and stereotypes about the roles of older and younger sisters with dark, vicious humor and makes it fresh. I also love when a writer successfully leads me to rooting for villains, or at least villainous motivations. Perspective on why people do terrible things doesn’t come easily for most of us but it can turn a familiar trope on its head (say, that of the …
