One of the UK’s busiest airports has warned rail services to and from the huge travel hub will be impacted on Saturday and Sunday due to “major engineering works”. Stansted Airport said there will no direct train service to and from London Liverpool Street on May 9 and 10, with passengers advised to take an alternative route. The airport, with a message shared on X, said that “due to planned engineering works” there will be limited rail replacement services. “There will be no direct train service to and from London Liverpool Street during this time, and passengers travelling to London will be advised to travel via Cambridge and London King’s Cross,” the message from the airport also said. Stansted Express passengers will be advised to travel via Cambridge and King’s Cross. Motorists stopping for 15 minutes or more will face a £28 fee, while those staying for under 15 minutes will be charged £10, marking a £3 rise from previous rates. Drivers exceeding 30 minutes in the terminal area risk a £100 Parking Charge Notice, which can be reduced to £60 if settled within 14 days. A £28 charge applies to vehicles re-entering the car park within 30 minutes of their initial entry. Blue Badge holders are entirely exempt from all these new fees. A spokesperson for Stansted Airport said that the move would aim to “manage congestion at the terminal and reduce ‘kiss and fly’ traffic, which is a major contributor to road congestion around the airport”. In September we arrived at Stansted airport to find that a fire within a departure lounge had closed the terminal. We had to wait outside in the chilly small hours for nearly two hours. It was another hour before security opened in the terminal, by which time our flight had departed empty to maintain the airline’s schedules. We were rebooked for the following day. We had to take the train home and pay for a taxi to take us to the airport for a second time early the next morning. We are thus more than £100 out of pocket. The airport tells us it’s not its fault. The airline says the (empty) flight left on time, so it is not its responsibility. Our insurers say we would be covered for an unforeseen delay in arriving at the airport, such as disruption to our journey there, but the small print doesn’t allow for the circumstances we actually found ourselves in.
