What a Muslim folk trickster can teach us about the danger of holding a single worldview

What a Muslim folk trickster can teach us about the danger of holding a single worldview

(The Conversation) — White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller told CNN in January 2026 that “we live in a world … that is governed by strength, that is governed by force, that is governed by power” – what he called the “iron laws of the world.” This “might-makes-right” mindset, which seems to permeate the Trump administration, sees the world through a singular prism and leaves little room for understanding others or their perspectives. Although President Donald Trump later said that he did “believe” in international “niceties,” his administration has focused on the exercise of raw power – as seen in its military operations against Venezuela and Iran – while cutting programs that seek to foster understanding. In September 2025, for example, the Department of Education terminated US$86 million in Title VI funding for foreign language and area studies programs at universities across the country, calling them “inconsistent with administration priorities.” Consider also the drastic cuts to international exchange programs and the administration withdrawing the country from 66 global cooperation organizations, including UNESCO, the …

Danes risked all to save Jews from Hitler. We must do nothing less to protect Denmark now.

Danes risked all to save Jews from Hitler. We must do nothing less to protect Denmark now.

(RNS) — Speaking to Jake Tapper of CNN about the proposed takeover of Greenland from Denmark — which could effectively end NATO and throw our civilization to the wolves — Trump aide Stephen Miller said, “We live in a world in which you can talk all you want about international niceties and everything else, but we live in a world, in the real world, Jake, that is governed by strength, that is governed by force, that is governed by power.” No wonder Miller’s childhood rabbi has criticized him as a purveyor of “negativity, violence, malice and brutality” who learned nothing from his Jewish spiritual education. This Hobbesian ethic is precisely the opposite of what the Talmudic rabbis meant when they said the world stands on, among other things, acts of kindness, truth and peace (Avot 1:2,18).  They also stated: “Be careful in your dealings with the ruling authorities, for they do not befriend a person except for their own needs. They seem like friends when it is to their own interest, but they do not …

William Shatner Reacts to Stephen Miller Complaint Over Woke Star Trek

William Shatner Reacts to Stephen Miller Complaint Over Woke Star Trek

William Shatner had a fascinating response to Stephen Miller‘s suggestion that the star’s insight was needed to improve the Star Trek franchise. Last week, the White House deputy chief of staff for policy shared a post from the X account End Wokeness that featured a viral clip of new series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. The clip showed castmembers Tricia Black (playing Lt. Rork), Gina Yashere (Lura Thok) and Holly Hunter (Nahla Ake), and the End Wokeness post added the message, “Star Trek 2026… Beyond parody…,” seemingly reflecting unhappiness over the performers’ looks. Miller wrote, “Tragic. But it’s not too late for @paramountplus to save the franchise. Step 1: Reconcile with @WilliamShatner and give him total creative control.” On Monday, Shatner responded by joking about the supposed problem with the scene, focusing on the fact that Hunter’s character uses glasses. “I am so on the same page with you @StephenM !” the 94-year-old star wrote. “The fact that they have not cure Hyperopia by the 32rd Century is an abysmal oversight on the writers!” The actor …

Would NATO fight a U.S. invasion of Greenland?

Would NATO fight a U.S. invasion of Greenland?

A fishing boat navigates around icebergs that broke off from the Jakobshavn Glacier and are floating in Disko Bay on March 10, 2025, in Ilulissat, Greenland. Joe Raedle | Getty Images News | Getty Images Europe spent much of 2025 scrambling to bolster its defenses against Russia — but just a week into the new year, it’s being forced to rethink security once again amid President Donald Trump’s threats to annex Greenland. Trump has been ramping up calls for Greenland — a semi-autonomous Danish territory — to be brought under Washington’s control. This week, the White House said Trump was considering various options to make it happen, including military action. Greenland, the world’s largest island, is rich in untapped mineral resources. Although geographically positioned on the North American continent, it is politically part of Europe. Acquiring the island would be no mean feat. Aside from political obstacles both at home and abroad, any attempt to take the territory by force would pit the U.S. against its NATO allies. Would NATO fight the U.S. over Greenland? …

Christopher Anderson on His White House Photos

Christopher Anderson on His White House Photos

The White House isn’t just the home of the sitting president of the United States—it’s also known as the people’s house, a symbol of democracy at work. Vanity Fair’s Chris Whipple took readers inside the building and the inner workings of a half-dozen of Donald Trump’s closest advisers, interviewing chief of staff Susie Wiles several times throughout the first months of Trump’s second term, and speaking to Stephen Miller, Marco Rubio, Karoline Leavitt, JD Vance, and others in a bombshell two-part feature. Whipple has discussed his reporting process for the story, and now, here’s Anderson in conversation with VF, taking us behind the scenes of the assignment that he almost turned down. And, to answer the question on everyone’s mind right away, Anderson says of those ultra-tight shots, “No, they’re not cropped versions. I’m standing very, very close.” Vanity Fair: What compelled you to take this assignment for Vanity Fair?Christopher Anderson: I wasn’t eager to accept the assignment at first. My roots are in journalism. I have done a lot of political work over the …

Behind The Scenes of Vanity Fair’s Revelatory White House Report

Behind The Scenes of Vanity Fair’s Revelatory White House Report

Now that the article is out, are you surprised by how it has been received/commented on? By the public and by the administration? I’m pleased by the overwhelmingly favorable public reaction to the story–and not at all bothered by the administration’s response. They’ve failed to challenge a single assertion or quotation from the piece. That’s because they know it’s rock solid. Do you think this is the last bit of significant access, and subsequent output, any journalist will ever get from this administration? Or do you think that them “closing their doors” to such an extent would create more problems than weathering an occasionally problematic article? My access to Susie Wiles was extraordinary and rare–and a decision made by her rather that any kind of White House policy. The Trump administration hasn’t made a habit of talking to mainstream media reporters and I don’t think that’s going to change. If you revisited this story a year from now, what thread would you most want to follow further? I’d want to pursue many threads–retribution, Epstein, Venezuela, …
