The dress is a remarkable witness to an incredible point in our history. Designer Norman Hartnell came up with nine ideas and she picked this one, the ninth. Its design tells us so much about her and about us as a nation at the time, and where she saw our place in the world, in terms of the different things she chose to have embroidered on that dress. “In addition to the traditional gold and white, she wanted colour, and alongside the thistle for Scotland, shamrock …

EastEnders villain’s return revealed in all-new story for George Knight

George Knight (Colin Salmon) is set to receive a chilling shock in forthcoming EastEnders episodes – as adoptive father Eddie (Christopher Fairbank) stages a return. Auf Wiedersehen, Pet star Fairbank portrayed Eddie across 16 episodes in early 2024, and was eventually sent down for the murder of George’s birth father, Henry Asare, four decades previously. An EastEnders spokesperson told Radio Times: “We can confirm Christopher Fairbank will be returning to EastEnders for a short stint later this spring.” Arriving into Albert Square alongside wife Gloria (Elizabeth Counsell), it quickly transpired that their motives for reuniting with their son were deeply sinister. George discovered that he was adopted from West Africa as part of a baby farming agreement, and when Henry was sent to the UK to collect him, Gloria pleaded with Eddie to do whatever it took to stop him. With a number of his racist cronies, Eddie beat Henry to death before stuffing his body into a suitcase and throwing it into the canal. A young George witnessed the incident, unaware of Henry’s true …

Coronation Street star reveals challenge of playing domestic abuse story

Coronation Street star reveals challenge of playing domestic abuse story

Gareth Pierce has revealed the challenges of portraying Todd Grimshaw’s (Gareth Pierce) domestic abuse storyline in Coronation Street. A special standalone episode that aired today saw Todd bravely report his husband Theo Silverton (James Cartwright) to the police after being subjected to months of verbal, psychological and physical abuse. On the surface, the relationship seemed to be a step in the right direction for Todd, though Theo slowly began to show his true colours. He stripped away Todd’s finances, mocked his appearance and forced him to lose weight, and even held a knife to his chest earlier this year. When Todd collated secret camera footage to prove what was going on, Theo manipulated the videos to look like he was the victim. Earlier this week, a badly beaten Todd turned up on Sarah Platt’s (Tina O’Brien) doorstep, begging her for help and asking her to take him to the police station. She’d believed that the couple had eloped to Northern Ireland, though it couldn’t have been further from the truth. Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) headed …

French film show: Sweet nostalgia in 1980s coming-of-age story ‘Just an Illusion’ – arts24

Film critic Manon Kerjean tells us why “Just an Illusion” is more than just a tender study of young teenagers’ first love, and how its retro décor and timely themes add weight to a family dynamic with Camille Cottin and Louis Garrel taking on parental roles. We also check out offbeat romance “The Doll”, starring Vincent Macaigne, Cécile de France and newcomer Zoé Marchal. Manon tells us why, despite its unlikely premise, the film makes some pertinent points about gender roles and loneliness, while delivering plenty of laughs. The true story of Philippe Croizon, a paraplegic who swam the English Channel, is brought to the screen in “For Better or Worse”, with para-athlete Pierre Rabine in the lead role. Plus we dip into Claire Denis’s latest film “The Fence” as the director depicts the tensions brewing on a construction site in West Africa. Source link

Margot Robbie confirms story details for new Ocean’s Eleven prequel

We’ve been given some new plot details about the upcoming Ocean’s Eleven prequel – with star Margot Robbie teasing that the film will focus on the parents of George Clooney’s character Danny Ocean. The news was confirmed at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, with the Barbie and Wuthering Heights star appearing during a sizzle reel that teased Warner Bros’ 2027 slate. “Before Danny Ocean ever stepped foot in Vegas, two masterminds taught him everything he knows – his parents,” she revealed. “You’ll see them in their prime, and in our new movie, pulling off an epic heist at the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix.” That certainly sounds like a fittingly glamorous setting for the movie, which will star Bradley Cooper alongside Robbie after the former replaced the previously announced Ryan Gosling in the cast. Cooper will also be helming the project – his fourth film as director following A Star Is Born, Maestro and Is This Thing On? – after Twisters and Minari filmmaker Lee Isaac Chung departed the film due to creative differences last month. How a fake Russian story became a real problem for Estonia – POLITICO

How a fake Russian story became a real problem for Estonia – POLITICO

“For years we lived together without any problems,” said Svetlana, a pensioner sitting on a bench looking out over the river, where, in a mirror image, Russians on the other side could be seen enjoying the springtime weather, walking along a promenade and sitting on a pair of swings.  “Everything was good. There wasn’t any discrimination.” She accused politicians in Tallinn and Brussels of scaremongering and fueling tensions among Estonians. “There is no threat, Russia is not a threat,” her husband Gennady, agreed emphatically, wondering aloud why in Switzerland, where he studied and worked, having multiple languages wasn’t seen as a problem.. Although he held Russian citizenship he didn’t express any desire to live in Russia, and neither did his wife, an Estonian citizen. “We don’t belong there. We are just Russian-speaking Estonians. I will live here until I die. This is my place,” Svetlana said sadly. “But I feel worried for my children’s future here.”  The two declined to give their full names or ages or be photographed, out of concern that would put …
