Iran crisis shoves Europe’s economic woes off summit agenda – POLITICO

“Heads of state and government are right to invest significant time in the unexpected geopolitical crises that have occurred over the course of the last weeks,” said Siegfried Mureșan, the lead lawmaker on the budget from the center-right European People’s Party, from which European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and most of the leaders also hail. “However, I believe that as a union we should not spend all of our political time on a single topic at a time and then ignore other subjects which are important but maybe not necessarily urgent.” Leaders have called on Brussels to help protect consumers and industry from high energy prices resulting from Iran’s blockade of maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, which has already lasted for six weeks. Oil and gas tankers have been left stranded in the strategic waterway, which links major exporters like Qatar and Saudi Arabia to the global market. Finland’s President Alexander Stubb told POLITICO last month that the conflict risks triggering a “self-inflicted global recession.” But leaders are wrestling with several …

Senators Plan Taiwan Trip Ahead Of Trump’s Summit With Xi Jinping

Senators Plan Taiwan Trip Ahead Of Trump’s Summit With Xi Jinping

Authored by Jacob Burg via The Epoch Times, Four U.S. senators from both sides of the aisle are planning to visit Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea within the coming days to strengthen U.S. alliances that they see as critical to challenging China’s sphere of influence. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), who serves as the ranking Democrat member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, announced the trip on March 28. Sens. John Curtis (R-Utah), Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), and Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) will join her on a trip to Taipei, Taiwan; Tokyo; and Seoul, South Korea, ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump’s May summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing. The trip could cause friction with Chinese leadership, which opposes other countries having relations with Taiwan and sees such activities as a challenge to Beijing’s claim of sovereignty over the independent island. While Taiwan is backed by the United States for its democracy, Trump’s recent floating of potential arms sales to Taiwan in discussions with Xi has highlighted implications about the future of U.S. policy toward the …

2026 Social Impact Summit Honors Kenneth Cole and Selena Gomez

Kenneth Cole and Selena Gomez were honored at the 2026 Social Impact Summit, the first outing of the Social Impact Fund to focus on fashion and beauty philanthropy, where speakers and panelists shared insight on topics from the importance of creative diversity to why college isn’t the only pathway to a career in the industry. Veteran fashion and accessories designer Kenneth Cole was honored with the Social Impact Fund’s Excellence in Fashion Philanthropy Award by Michael Atmore, editor-in-chief of Women’s Wear Daily, in front of an audience full of VIPS, Fashion Institute of Technology students and fashion and beauty execs inside FIT’s theater. In 1985 — more than 40 years ago — Cole started a very witty ad campaign in support of HIV/AIDS research and charities. He was the first person in fashion to launch a full-scale philanthropic ad campaign, which led the way for many others. “At the time I started,” Cole told Atmore as part of an onstage Q&A, “AIDS was already pervasive, but no one was talking about it. I don’t think we could …

NAPTE, Realscreen Summit Shut Down Amid Industry Consolidation

NAPTE, Realscreen Summit Shut Down Amid Industry Consolidation

Brunico Communications has shut down its U.S. television events business, including NAPTE and its Kidscreen and Realscreen Summits. “This decision was deeply considered and stemmed from the market consolidation that continues to progress and have structural impacts on the content production business,” Russell Goldstein, president and CEO of Toronto-based Brunico, said in a statement on Tuesday. The move follows NATPE, a onetime storied trade show, and the Realscreen TV conferences and markets being combined in one Miami event in Feb. 2026 for one last time. Kidscreen and Realscreen will continue as kids and unscripted content publications, respectively. With the closure of the U.S. events, Claire Macdonald, NATPE’s executive director, and Jocelyn Christie, Kidscreen’s publisher, will leave Brunico. Napte in Miami returned in 2024 after the assets of The National Association of Television Program Executives were acquired by Brunico, which also operates the Banff World Media Festival. The acquisition followed NAPTE filing for bankruptcy protection in Oct. 2022 after running into a financial wall due to the forced cancellations of the 2021 and 2022 U.S. TV markets amid the pandemic.  NAPTE …

US Lawmakers Say They’ll Visit Taiwan Before Trump’s Summit With China’s Xi

WASHINGTON (AP) — A bipartisan group of four senators has plans to visit Taiwan, Japan and South Korea in the coming days on a trip meant to bolster U.S. alliances seen as important to countering China’s dominance in Asia. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, announced the trip Saturday. She will be joined by Sens. John Curtis, R-Utah, Thom Tillis, R-N.C., and Jacky Rosen, D-Nev. Their visits to Taipei, Tokyo and Seoul are coming before President Donald Trump’s trip to Beijing in May for a rescheduled summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The lawmakers’ stop in Taiwan could draw scrutiny from China, which opposes such relations and sees them as a challenge to its claim of sovereignty over the self-governing island. Taiwan relies on American backing for its democracy, but recent moves by Trump, such as discussing a potential weapons sales to Taiwan with Xi, have raised questions about the future direction of U.S. policy. Analysts in both China and the United States believe Xi, through …

Prediction markets forum set to debut at SBC Summit Americas

Prediction markets will take center stage at this summer’s SBC Summit Americas, as the fast-growing industry continues to spark debate across the U.S. gambling and financial industries. The Prediction Markets Forum is scheduled for June 11 and will run as part of the conference’s Breakout Stage lineup. The forum will bring together sportsbook executives, legal experts, analysts, and academics to unpack how these markets are evolving and what their rise could mean for traditional sports betting. Patrick Everson, a longtime sports betting analyst and contributor to FOX Sports, will chair the four-session program. The agenda centers on discussions of how sportsbooks are experimenting with event contracts, as well as the mounting regulatory and integrity concerns that have followed the sector’s rapid expansion. Prediction markets surge into public view Prediction markets entered the mainstream spotlight during the 2024 U.S. presidential election cycle, when trading on political event contracts took off in popularity. The surge in activity during that period drew attention from major betting operators and regulators alike, pushing the products into broader public and political …
