UK spring sunshine prompts warnings over unsafe fake designer sunglasses | Health

While many will be enjoying the spring sunshine, experts have cautioned against wearing fake designer sunglasses, warning they could do more harm than good. As the College of Optometrists notes, sunglasses not only protect the eyes against glare on sunny days, but can also shield them from harmful ultraviolet (UV) light. That’s important because UV rays have been linked to a number of eye conditions. In the short term, for example, they can cause a temporary but painful condition called photokeratitis – essentially a “sunburn” on the cornea, which sits at the front of the eye. In the longer term, UV exposure is associated with the development of early-onset cataracts, non-cancerous growths on the cornea known as pterygia, some types of eyelid cancer, and potentially even age-related macular degeneration, which can lead to sight loss. However, experts have warned wearing fake designer sunglasses could be worse for your eyes than going without as they often lack crucial UV filters. Alex Day, a consultant ophthalmologist at Moorfields eye hospital, said: “When you buy fake sunglasses, you …

How Long Will Spring Sunshine Last In The UK?

How Long Will Spring Sunshine Last In The UK?

After an exceptionally soggy February, the UK is experiencing an unusually warm and dry April. In fact, we saw the warmest April day in 80 years earlier this month, and temperatures are expected to reach 21°C again in parts of the UK. Some parts of the UK have seen 2% of their usual rainfall in April. As the BBC reports that no rainfall is expected soon, we thought we’d share what we know so far about how long the sunny spell is expected to last. When will the sunshine end this spring? Good news if you’re looking to get out in the garden this weekend: from Saturday 25 April to Monday 27 April, the Met Office said the weather should stay “largely fine and dry with plenty of sunshine”, with “temperatures above average for many”. While fog and frost are expected at night, the days should remain dry and warm. In fact, the Met Office added, “high pressure is likely to remain centred close to or over the UK through the remainder of April and …

Break in the grey as Aberdeen sees sunshine for the first time in 21 days | Aberdeen

Aberdeen has finally had some sunshine, for the first time in 21 days – marking the end of the longest sunless period in the area since Met Office records began in 1957. Residents of the Granite city in north-east Scotland glimpsed the sun late on Thursday afternoon, with sunshine having been last recorded on 21 January. The Met Office said that 30 minutes of sun was officially recorded in the Dyce area in the hour up to 4pm. It followed weeks of unrelenting rain in the region and throughout the UK. More than 277mm of rain fell on Aboyne in Aberdeenshire in January, about four times the monthly average, while the first 10 days of the year brought heavy snow to the north-east of Scotland. In just the first three days of this month, south-east England received nearly a third of its average February rainfall. The wintry weather is expected to continue, with a yellow warning for snow and ice for most of Scotland and northern England in place until 12 noon on Friday. The …

Sleep, stress and sunshine: endocrinologists on 11 ways to look after your metabolism | Health

Get to know your hormones “Most people would like to have more energy and be leaner,” says Prof David Ray, an endocrinologist at the University of Oxford who also provides NHS services. “There is a connection between how we choose to live, what our bodies look and feel like, and the hormones that are going around the body. What endocrinologists deal with is disorders of either a lack of hormones, or too much of a hormone.” Hormones impact almost all bodily functions, from skin, to the gut, to our moods. “During an average day, the hormones in our body will vary depending on what time it is and what we’re doing,” he says. “For example, have we recently had something to eat or are we hungry? Are we having a stressful day or a calm and quiet day?” “Metabolic rate refers to metabolism, which describes how the body uses different components from the foods that we eat and turns those into all the various things that it needs to fuel the body, build proteins and …

West African sunshine dishes: Toyo Odetunde’s chicken yassa pot pie and stuffed plantain boats – recipes | Food

If there’s anything that can assuage my winter blues, it’s a soul-soothing chicken pie. I’ve long enjoyed innovating fusions between west African and other cuisines, and today’s marriage of a deeply flavourful Senegalese chicken yassa-inspired filling in buttery, flaky puff pastry is one of my all-time favourites. But, first, my take on hearty Nigerian stewed beans – ewa riro – using tinned beans for added convenience. Typically paired with ripe plantain, I use the rich beans to fill canoas (plantain boats) in a playful, Latin American-inspired twist. Plantain boats stuffed with stewed black-eyed beans (pictured top) Dried prawns and west African red palm oil, which are integral to our cooking (and the latter is not to be confused with those industrial palm oils that are driving mass deforestation), give this dish its signature umami and uniquely earthy and subtly sweet flavour.
