Mughal-era pigeon training survives in heart of India’s capital | Arts and Culture

Published On 21 Apr 202621 Apr 2026 In the bustling heart of the Indian capital, a handful of devotees continue the ancient Mughal tradition of pigeon-rearing, known as kabootarbaazi, preserving skills passed down through generations by training birds to navigate vast distances. Daily, amid the crowded lanes near Jama Masjid in Old Delhi, just kilometres away from the affluent neighbourhoods of New Delhi, 30-year-old Azhar Udeen gathers with his younger brother and friends on his terrace. There, they release more than 120 pigeons of various breeds from their cages. These birds are fed and trained to fly in precise formations, sometimes participating in races as their keepers enthusiastically cheer them on. “I saw my grandfather doing this when I was a child, and after I grew up, I watched and learned from my ustad [teacher],” Udeen, a pigeon keeper, told the Reuters news agency. Kabootarbaazi, derived from the Hindi/Urdu word for pigeon, flourished under the patronage of Mughal rulers who governed India. Men would maintain flocks, teach them formation flying, and employ them as messengers. …

No. 1 Duke survives NCAA Tournament first-round scare against No. 16 Siena

The No. 1 Duke Blue Devils, the betting favorite to win the men’s NCAA Tournament, barely escaped the round of 64 with a 71-65 win over the No. 16 Siena Saints on Thursday. Follow along for live updates of Thursday’s games The Blue Devils trailed from the 15:31 mark of the first half until the 4:25 mark of the second, when an Isaiah Evans layup finally gave Duke the lead again. The Blue Devils finished the game on a 15-4 run to extinguish any hopes of a shocking upset. No. 16 seeds have upset No. 1 seeds only twice before in the men’s tourney, in 2018 and 2023. Gavin Doty was remarkable in a losing effort for the Saints, scoring 21 points. He was aided by big man Francis Folefac, who added 18. But they both cooled off in the second half, as did the rest of the team. After shooting 17-for-31 from the field in the first half, Siena made only eight of its 34 field goal attempts in the second. At one point, …

Ireland’s leader survives visit with cranky old guy in White House

It could have gone worse, you’d have to say, for Irish Taoiseach (or prime minister) Micheál Martin, who made his ritual St. Patrick’s Day visit to the White House on Tuesday. But in this case, maybe not a whole lot worse. In fairness, Martin was no more than a bit player in his joint press conference alongside Donald Trump in the Oval Office, a fate shared by many of the president’s past visitors and many more to come. Only a few of the questions flung at the two leaders by reporters had anything to do with Ireland or the recent complications in U.S.-Irish relations, which include the Iran war, Israel’s war in Gaza, Trump’s improvised tariff policies and his unrelenting hostility to the European Union. (The Republic of Ireland remains an EU member, unlike the larger island nation and former colonial superpower next door.) An Irish reporter asked Trump about the proposed expansion of his golf resort in County Clare, which is currently on hold over the fate of a protected species of snail. He …

Ian Huntley to be sent to £300,000-a-year secure hospital if he survives | UK | News

Soham murderer Ian Huntley faces being transferred to a £300,000-a-year secure hospital funded by the taxpayer should he survive the prison assault, according to reports. The cost would be substantially higher than the £85,000 required to detain the double murderer alongside fellow killers and sex offenders at HMP Frankland, County Durham. However, it is believed Huntley cannot be returned there should he pull through, as he would face considerable danger from fellow prisoners, The Mirror reports. Only three secure hospitals are authorised to accommodate Category A inmates: Broadmoor Hospital in Berkshire, Rampton in Nottinghamshire and Ashworth in Merseyside. Sources suggest Huntley, the ex-school caretaker, would be moved to Ashworth, representing a dramatic change from the harsh conditions of Frankland, dubbed Monster Mansion. Child killer Ian Huntley will be vulnerable to another attack if he survives | UK News

Any prisoner convicted of a child sex crime is a target for other inmates. The court may have delivered justice in a case such as Ian Huntley’s, but for some fellow criminals, what’s really needed is revenge – to make you suffer like you made your victims suffer. From his first day in inside, there was a price on Huntley’s head – not a monetary one, but the promise of “respect” for anyone who attacked him. Read more: Soham murderer Ian Huntley seriously injured In the violent world of a top security jail, respect from your fellow cons is everything and there’s nothing quite like hurting a prisoner considered “the lowest of the low”. An infamous villain once described to me over lunch how he witnessed a planned prison knife attack on a child sex offender, a story he told years later with relish, laughter and no grim detail spared. Image: Ian Huntley Huntley would have been on Rule 43, held in the prison’s unit for vulnerable inmates, mostly sex offenders, but police informants too. …

Starmer survives – but minister says Streeting ‘absolutely bottled it | UK | News

Embattled PM Sir Keir Starmer desperately clung to power Monday evening following a Cabinet-delivered eleventh-hour reprieve from political oblivion. The Prime Minister suffered a devastating blow when Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar dramatically demanded his resignation purportedly for the nation’s benefit amid the Mandelson scandal fallout. Mr Sarwar, formerly a Starmer ally but now whispered to be acting on behalf of Health Secretary and widely-touted leadership contender, Wes Streeting, declared Downing Street had committed ‘too many mistakes.’ He stated: “I have to be honest about failure wherever I see it. The distraction has to end, the leadership has to change.” Advance warning triggers panic Mr Sarwar notified the PM beforehand of his intervention, triggering No 10 panic and launching a substantial rescue operation. A Labour source revealed ministers received instructions to express PM support by day’s end or face dismissal. The Prime Minister was still absorbing the shock of chief of staff Morgan McSweeney’s Sunday exit, compounded by communications director Tim Allan’s Monday morning departure. Cabinet Secretary Sir Chris Wormald teetered on the brink of …

Sinner survives as Australian Open bakes in extreme heat

Sinner survives as Australian Open bakes in extreme heat

MELBOURNE, Jan 24 : Jannik Sinner battled back from the brink of a cramp-induced breakdown to keep his Australian Open title defence alive after extreme heat brought play to a halt on baking outdoor courts at Melbourne Park. In a dramatic third-round match, Italian Sinner lost his first set since October against inspired American Eliot Spizzirri and was a limping wreck under a blazing sun at Rod Laver Arena. However, the match swung in his favour when the tournament invoked its extreme heat policy, allowing the stadium’s roof to shut and Sinner to rally for a dramatic 4-6 6-3 6-4 6-4 win. Sinner, who will meet fellow Italian Luciano Darderi in the fourth round, said he was “lucky” to finish the last two sets under the roof after cramp affected first his legs and then his arms. “At the end of the day, tennis is a very mental game. I just tried to play as calm as possible,” he said before cutting short his on-court interview. The heat shutdown halted outdoor matches for most of …

French government survives no-confidence votes over budget – POLITICO

French government survives no-confidence votes over budget – POLITICO

That maneuver, Article 49.3 of the constitution, allows the government to ram through legislation without a vote but in turn gives opposition lawmakers the opportunity to respond by putting forward a no-confidence vote. Lecornu triggered that measure on Tuesday to pass the part of the budget that concerns raising revenue. He is expected to use it again Friday to pass the final part of the budget concerning government expenditures. Lecornu had been expected to survive, as the political extremes do not have enough lawmakers among themselves to bring down the government. The more centrist Socialists, who have played a kingmaker role during the prime minister’s tenure, did not try to topple the government after Lecornu offered them several last-minute budgetary concessions. France is under pressure from financial markets and international institutions to cut a budget deficit that came in at 5.4 percent of GDP last year and debt that is projected to go up to 118.2 percent of GDP in 2026, according to the government’s forecast. The country’s hung parliament was, for a second year …
