9 Best Cooling Blankets to Stop Waking Up in a Pool of Sweat

9 Best Cooling Blankets to Stop Waking Up in a Pool of Sweat

Best Cooling Comforter: Buffy Cloud Comforter If you want your bed to still look plush and appealing, the Buffy Cloud Comforter is your best bet. It’s technically a comforter, not just a blanket, and has a lightweight, quilted design that is breathable without sacrificing that cloud-like loft. That said, it got hotter faster when I was sharing the bed compared to some of the more technical fabrics on this list. Still, if you don’t want to give up coziness, texture, or aesthetics—and you sleep solo or only run moderately warm—it’s a strong option. Best Cotton Cooling Blanket: Brooklinen Dreamweave Waffle Bed Blanket Brooklinen Dreamweave Bed Blanket Brooklinen’s Dreamweave Waffle Blanket doesn’t have fancy phase-change cooling tech baked in, but it doesn’t really need it. The airy, waffle-weave Turkish cotton creates a natural breathability that kept me feeling crisp all night long during testing. It’s lightweight but still substantial enough that you don’t feel like you’re sleeping under a flimsy sheet. And unlike the slippery feeling of some synthetic cooling blankets, this one feels cozy, substantial, …

Famous Welsh hotel demolished after fire reborn after ‘blood, sweat and tears’

Famous Welsh hotel demolished after fire reborn after ‘blood, sweat and tears’

A popular hotel that was demolished after being severely damaged in a devastating fire earlier last summer has announced it is ready to reopen. The Worm’s Head Hotel, located in the Gower Peninsula, collapsed after an overnight fire on July 14, 2025. The hotel, known for its breathtaking views of the iconic Rhossili Bay and the famous Worm’s Head, has long been a beloved destination for locals and visitors alike. The family-owned hotel was left heartbroken after the blaze, which was later determined to be accidental by the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service. Following the fire, the hotel’s owner vowed to “raise it from the ashes,” as an outpouring of support from the community and past guests flooded in. The team behind The Worm’s Head have done just that – announcing they are ready to open less than a year after the devastating fire. The hotel will reopen on Saturday, April 11, after “much blood, sweat, and tears”, the owners said in a Facebook post. Never miss a Swansea story by signing …

Democrats start to sweat over Virginia’s redistricting referendum

Democrats start to sweat over Virginia’s redistricting referendum

After putting an aggressive redraw of the state’s congressional map before voters, some Virginia Democrats are growing uneasy about its prospects for passage one month out from the special election. Virginia Democrats entered 2026 riding a wave of momentum, comfortably flipping the governorship and expanding their majority in the state House in last fall’s elections. And heading into the April contest, they hold massive fundraising and ad spending advantages. But recently, the realities of waging a unique campaign in a state that isn’t nearly as Democratic as California, where voters approved a redrawn map through a similar process last year, have begun to set in. Some supporters of the Virginia referendum acknowledge the challenge of convincing voters to back a gerrymandered map when Democrats, who several years ago backed the formation of the state’s bipartisan redistricting commission, have criticized Republicans for similar moves. Virginia voters are also not accustomed to going to the polls in April, when Democrats scheduled the special election, making turnout particularly unpredictable. And recent polling showing mixed views of the ballot …

‘Walking sharks’ lay eggs without breaking a sweat

‘Walking sharks’ lay eggs without breaking a sweat

Get the Popular Science daily newsletter💡 Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. Being pregnant and giving birth is hard work for any species—but epaulette sharks (Hemiscyllium ocellatum) might disagree.  These fish and a number of other species are known as “walking sharks” for their ability to traverse both the seafloor and land with their fins. But as of now, that’s no longer the coolest thing about this rather adorable predator. Epaulette sharks’ energy use didn’t change during their reproduction cycle, as described in a study recently published in the journal Biology Open.  “Reproduction is the ultimate investment … you are literally building new life from scratch,” Jodie Rummer, a marine biologist at James Cook University and co-author of the recent study, said in a university statement. “We expected that when sharks make this complex egg, their energy use would shoot up. But there was no uptick in energy use, it was completely flat,” she adds. They “appear to have adapted their physiology to be able to optimise their energy use.”   Researchers broadly believe …

Is it true that … you can sweat out a hangover? | Health & wellbeing

Is it true that … you can sweat out a hangover? | Health & wellbeing

Here’s a useful fact to quote to any smug relatives who say they went for a run the morning after their Christmas party: you can’t get rid of toxins by sweating. “Toxins” is a broad term, says Adam Taylor, professor of anatomy at Lancaster Medical School, covering anything that can damage the body – from heavy metals to chemicals found in plastics, as well as the normal byproducts of our own metabolism. The liver is designed to process the toxins in alcohol and either break them down into usable units or get rid of them. The waste products are then filtered from the blood and excreted in urine or stools. Going for a run or sitting in a sauna after a night of drinking won’t reduce the toxins produced by metabolising alcohol Sweat, on the other hand, has a very different job. Although it can contain extremely small amounts of some metabolic byproducts, its purpose is temperature regulation (and, in some situations, to signal stress or fear). “Sweating is not the means to remove toxins,” says Taylor. “Going for a run …
