In legendary Swiss village of Sils-Maria, the Chesa Marchetta hotel blends art with the art of living

In legendary Swiss village of Sils-Maria, the Chesa Marchetta hotel blends art with the art of living

The entrance embodies simplicity: a whitewashed façade, a stone ramp paved and engraved, and, near a glass door, the simple word “pensiun” in all caps and in Romansh – the fourth official language of Switzerland, alongside Italian, German and French. Having just opened in December 2025, Chesa Marchetta was the second hotel created by Iwan and Manuela Wirth, co-founders of the well-established Hauser & Wirth art gallery, who were already behind the Fife Arms in the Scottish Highlands. Read more In the Highlands, bedrooms fit for lords To house their new, intimate-scale venture, the couple chose the historic heart of Sils-Maria, a village in the Swiss Alps located in the canton of Graubünden, clustered around traditional houses and upscale hotels. Beneath the beams of a house (chesa, in Romansh) and barns with foundations dating back to the 16th century, the property offers 13 rooms and a restaurant seating around 50 guests. The extensive renovation was carried out by architect Luis Laplace, who was constantly careful to avoid ostentation. The Argentine, based in Paris, whose sense …

Swiss skier Von Allmen makes history by winning third Olympic gold

Swiss skier Von Allmen makes history by winning third Olympic gold

Franjo von Allmen became only the third male skier in history to win three gold medals at a single Winter Games when he claimed victory in Wednesday’s super-G in Bormio. Von Allmen booked himself a place in the pantheon of Olympic alpine skiing greats, with Austrian Toni Sailer and France’s Jean-Claude Killy the only other racers to have won a hat-trick of golds. Sailer won the downhill, giant slalom and slalom races at the 1956 Cortina Olympics, a feat mirrored by Killy at the 1968 Grenoble Games. Only Croatia’s Janica Kostelic has achieved the feat in women’s skiing, at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games. Switzerland’s Von Allmen, who won the downhill on Saturday, partnered Tanguy Nef to victory in Monday’s team combined. Wearing bib number seven for the super-G, the 24-year-old hit speeds of 120km/h (75mph) to dominate the race down the Stelvio course, clocking a winning time of 1min 25.32sec. American Ryan Cochran-Siegle followed up on his silver medal from Beijing Games four years ago with another second spot, 0.13sec off Von Allmen’s …

Slow train to Turin: a winter journey through the Swiss Alps to Italy | Turin holidays

Slow train to Turin: a winter journey through the Swiss Alps to Italy | Turin holidays

Is there a better sensation for a traveller than when a train speeds out of a tunnel? The sudden flood of light, that howling rush of air. Clearly, it’s not just me who thinks trains are the new (old) planes, with 2025 having seen a 7% rise in UK train travel, and more Europeans than ever looking to hit the rails. The Guardian’s journalism is independent. We will earn a commission if you buy something through an affiliate link. Learn more. It’s late December, and I’m heading out on a slow-train journey across the historic railways of the Swiss Alps and the Italian lakes. It’s a trip of roughly 1,800 miles (2,900km), crossing five countries, almost entirely by scenic daytime trains. What is clear from the off is how easy, and slightly disorientating, this type of train travel can be: drifting through stations, across platforms and over borders, it’s hard to believe we’ve hit three countries in less than a day – the UK, France and Switzerland – such is the ease of each passport stop. …

The death on Saturday was announced a month after the inferno at the ski resort of Crans-Montana. Besides those killed, another 115 were injured, most of whom remain in various hospitals. “An 18-year-old Swiss national died at a hospital in Zurich on Jan 31,” the Wallis canton’s public prosecutor Beatrice Pilloud said in a brief statement. “The death toll from the fire at Le Constellation bar on Jan 1, 2026, has now risen to 41.” Pilloud said no further information would be released at this stage by her office, which is investigating the tragedy. Those killed in the disaster were aged 14 to 39, but the majority were teenagers. Only four were aged over 24. Among the dead are 23 Swiss nationals, including one French-Swiss dual national, and 18 foreigners. They include eight French nationals, including a French-British-Israeli girl; six Italian teenagers, including an …

Italy recalls ambassador over Swiss release of Crans-Montana fire suspect – POLITICO

The diplomatic escalation follows the Jan. 1 fire at Le Constellation nightclub in the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana, which broke out during New Year celebrations shortly after 1 a.m., killing 40 people and injuring 116. Investigators believe indoor pyrotechnic sparklers attached to champagne bottles ignited flammable acoustic foam on the ceiling, triggering a rapid flashover that engulfed the packed basement venue within seconds. Swiss prosecutors opened a criminal investigation into the bar’s owners on suspicion of negligent homicide, bodily harm and arson. Jacques Moretti, one of the bar’s co-owners, had been detained earlier this month as a flight risk before a Swiss court ordered his release on bail on Friday. Source link
