Molineux’s back injury could prompt Australia to review captaincy before women’s T20 World Cup

Molineux’s back injury could prompt Australia to review captaincy before women’s T20 World Cup

April 8 : The decision to appoint Sophie Molineux as Australia women’s captain may require reassessment if she continues to be affected by injuries, selector Shawn Flegler said on Wednesday. The bowling all-rounder was named the team’s all‑format captain in January, succeeding Alyssa Healy. However, the 28-year-old has struggled with a back injury and was ruled out of the remainder of Australia’s multi-format series against India during February and March. Molineux captained Australia in the Twenty20 leg of their West Indies tour in March-April, but neither batted nor bowled in the first two matches and missed the other games. The women’s T20 World Cup begins on June 12 in England and Wales. “We were clear from the start that the T20 World Cup was the priority series and we were going to make decisions around that,” Flegler told reporters. “The stress reaction in the back during the Indian series, not ideal, but things do happen. She’s on track for the T20 World Cup and that’s what the goal was at the start. It’s probably a …

India were preordained to win T20 World Cup and they did not disappoint

India were preordained to win T20 World Cup and they did not disappoint

The 14th over emphasised the sense that Samson was operating on a rarefied level. First, Rachin Ravindra fractionally overpitched and was launched over long on. Then, when Ravindra overcompensated and dropped short, he was heaved over deep midwicket. Finally, Ravindra located a good length just on off stump. No matter: Samson launched another six, clearing deep extra cover with a crisp drive. For Samson, the only frustration was that, for the third consecutive match, he fell just short of a century. This 89, from 46 balls, matched his score against England, which followed an undefeated 97 versus West Indies. Yet the very lack of centuries reflects India’s culture of selflessness: the full embrace of the reality that T20 demands a completely different batting approach to the longer formats. “For too long in Indian cricket we’ve spoken about milestones,” Gautam Gambhir, India’s head coach, said. “Stop celebrating milestones, celebrate trophies.”  Samson’s status as player of the tournament was well deserved. He was only recalled for the final three games: a chilling illustration to the rest of …

Score and match updates from today’s T20 World Cup semi-final

Their defeat also came in spite of the considerable advantage of winning the toss, allowing them to chase as the dew took hold. Only twice in the previous 14 T20 World Cup knockout matches played under lights had the side batting first won. While England would hit 15 sixes, they still fell four short of India’s tally of 19. Seven of these came off Jofra Archer alone. With the new ball, Archer’s pace was exploited by Samson, either side of Brook’s drop. When he returned later in the innings, Archer leant upon his slower balls, which sat up in the pitch, just as they had against Nepal and West Indies earlier in the World Cup. The contrast with the supreme Bumrah, who had the chutzpah to execute a series of yorkers and only conceded 33 runs to Archer’s 61, was uncomfortable. Sam Curran, with his much-vaunted moon ball, was treated almost as brutally. Tournaments are natural backends to careers. This match might well prove the last international appearance for Liam Dawson, whose solitary over leaked …
