The controversy centers on BIWOC Rising, a nonprofit group in Berlin-Kreuzberg that operates a coworking space and café marketed as a protected venue for Black, Indigenous, and women of color, as well as transgender, intersex, and nonbinary people of color. Critics say the model amounts to a publicly subsidized space that excludes white people while presenting itself as a project for tolerance, diversity, and democracy. AfD co-leader Alice Weidel said the case showed why the party wants to overhaul Germany’s taxpayer-funded activist sector. “A Berlin café that bans white people from entering was funded with €662,450 in taxpayer money — from the federal program ‘Democracy in Action!’ Pure racism! The Department of the Interior, headed by a man who has received hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes from oil companies, just declared it will spend $1 billion of your dollars to convince a French oil company, TotalEnergies, to stop development of affordable, reliable offshore wind and instead shift to expensive, unreliable liquified methane gas. TotalEnergies is the third-largest oil company in the world, but it also operates some solar and wind projects in various parts of the world (including solar in Texas, and a wind farm in the North Sea, pictured above). It had owned two offshore wind leases in Carolina Long Bay and New York Bight, both awarded in 2022. It was going to develop these sites into offshore wind locations to help develop reliable, cheap power for the US. Offshore wind is one of the cheapest forms of electricity, and also one of the lowest-impact environmentally. It doesn’t use up any land space, and doesn’t create any pollution. The brother duo behind the UK betting shop chain Betfred has been named the UK’s biggest taxpayer for the first time. Brothers Fred and Peter Done, founders of bookmaker chain Betfred, have been named in the top spot of The Sunday Times Tax List, a round-up of the UK’s highest-paying taxpayers in 2025. The brothers paid £400.1 million ($547.7 million) tax over the last year, coming in ahead of various other rich names and families, including Harry Styles, aristocrats, and entrepreneurs.
