Brits facing extra EU border checks, as ‘technical difficulties’ hamper new system | Money News

British travellers heading on their spring and summer holidays face changes at borders after the introduction of the EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES). The EES, which replaces passport stamping for all non-EU citizens, began its much-delayed rollout on 12 October 2025 and is scheduled to become fully operational across all Schengen area border crossing points from today. But not all countries appear ready to start processing “third-country nationals”, including the British, in accordance with the rules laid down by Brussels. Which countries will have the Entry/Exit System? It will apply to 29 European countries in the Schengen area free travel zone – 25 EU member states and four non-EU countries. OpenAI’s Sam Altman announces Pentagon deal with ‘technical safeguards’

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced late on Friday that his company has reached an agreement allowing the Department of Defense to use its AI models in the department’s classified network. This follows a high-profile standoff between the DoD — also known under the Trump administration as the Department of War — and OpenAI’s rival Anthropic. The Pentagon pushed AI companies, including Anthropic, to allow their models to be used for “all lawful purposes,” while Anthropic sought to draw a red line around mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons. In a lengthy statement released Thursday, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said the company “never raised objections to particular military operations nor attempted to limit use of our technology in an ad hoc manner,” but he argued that “in a narrow set of cases, we believe AI can undermine, rather than defend, democratic values.” More than 60 OpenAI employees and 300 Google employees signed an open letter this week asking their employers to support Anthropic’s position. After Anthropic and the Pentagon failed to reach an agreement, President …

‘Technical malfunction’ causes mass power outages in Ukraine

‘Technical malfunction’ causes mass power outages in Ukraine

Ukraine’s power grid experienced mass outages on Saturday after a “technical malfunction” caused electrical lines between Moldova, Romania and Ukraine to fail, Ukraine’s energy minister said. The malfunction “caused a simultaneous shutdown of the 400 kilovolt line between the power grids of Romania and Moldova and the 750 kilovolt line between western and central Ukraine”, Denys Shmygal said on Telegram. Problems in Ukraine’s power grid also led to the emergency shutdown ‍of Moldova’s energy system on Saturday, Moldova’s energy ministry said. The latest outages come amid recent Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure that have caused major disruptions to heat, electricity and water provision as the country faces a particularly harsh winter. Nvidia Aided DeepSeek AI Breakthrough With “Extensive Technical Support,” House China Chair Warns

Congressman John Moolenaar (R-MI), chairman of the House Select Committee on the CCP, penned a letter to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick that Nvidia provided extensive technical support to DeepSeek, enabling the startup to achieve chatbot performance breakthroughs despite US export controls on advanced AI chips to China to mitigate the risks of the technology falling into the hands of Beijing’s military. “While NVIDIA asserts its relationship with DeepSeek is “to promote the [AI] ecosystem flywheel and improve NVIDIA’s products,” documents produced to the Committee reveal NVIDIA provided extensive technical support that enabled DeepSeek—now integrated into People’s Liberation Army (PLA) systems and a demonstrated cybersecurity risk—to achieve frontier AI capabilities,” Moolenaar wrote in the letter sent to Lutnick’s office on Wednesday. Moolenaar continued, “These findings demonstrate why rigorous enforcement of the Department’s H200 export rule, which requires certification that chips will not serve military purposes, is essential—even if such enforcement effectively prevents H200 exports to the PRC altogether.” DeepSeek’s release sent shock waves through US markets last year – about this time – over risks that …

Radar ‘technical issue’ halts flights to Birmingham Airport | UK News

A power outage, caused by bad weather, at a National Air Traffic Service’s (NATS) radar site halted arrivals to Birmingham Airport overnight. Over 20 flights bound for the airport were cancelled, diverted or delayed – with several flights suffering delays of over four hours. The radar which serves Birmingham Airport was restored shortly before 1.30am on Monday. NATS apologised for the disruption and said it was working closely with the airport as it resumed its air traffic service. Engineers from NATS worked with National Grid to resolve the issue, with National Grid saying it responded “to a power cut in Shropshire”. Pic: Flightradar24 The technical issue with the NATS radar that serves Birmingham Airport had meant that only departing flights were being allowed to operate. Birmingham Airport also apologised for the disruption.
