Tomorrow’s Testimony: Kevin Warsh To Walk Tightrope On Rates, Inflation And Fed Independence

President Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the Federal Reserve, Kevin Warsh, will appear before the Senate Banking Committee on Tuesday at 10AM ET in what is shaping up to be one of the most politically charged confirmation hearings in the central bank’s modern history. Warsh, a former Fed governor who has spent years criticizing the institution as directionless and in need of “regime change,” now has the chance to outline his vision for remaking the world’s most powerful central bank. But he faces a delicate balancing act: signaling loyalty to Trump’s push for lower interest rates while reassuring markets, lawmakers, and global observers that he will safeguard the Fed’s independence and keep inflation in check. The hearing arrives against a backdrop of extraordinary tension. Trump has repeatedly attacked current Chair Jerome Powell, attempted to fire Fed Governor Lisa Cook (a move now before the Supreme Court), and backed a Justice Department criminal probe into Powell and the Fed over a $2.5 billion headquarters renovation project. Powell has called the investigation politically motivated. Markets continue to …

U.S. intelligence chiefs’ testimony is out of sync with Trump’s talking points

But Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and CIA Director John Ratcliffe told members of Congress that the president was informed about Iran’s potential reaction to a U.S. attack, including likely retaliatory strikes on Arab neighbors, and that Tehran could hold commercial shipping at risk in the Strait of Hormuz. The intelligence assessments prompted the Pentagon to take steps to safeguard troops at bases based in the region before the war was launched, Ratcliffe said. Gabbard added that though Iran’s “capabilities have been largely degraded,” the regime could “still have means to threaten passage through the Strait of Hormuz.” As for Trump’s prediction three weeks ago that the Iranian regime would crumble once the air strikes were finished, Gabbard told lawmakers that the regime was still “intact” but damaged. And Ratcliffe said toppling the regime was not an objective of the operation, dubbed “Epic Fury,” for the U.S., though that might be a goal for the Israeli government. “So to be clear, the president’s objectives with respect to Operation Epic Fury did not include regime …

LAFD testimony details missed chances to fully put out Lachman fire

Jacob Ulibarri spent about six hours on New Year’s Day last year squashing hot spots where the Lachman fire had burned. The rookie Los Angeles firefighter arrived sometime after 7 a.m., when the smoky areas were all over and easy to see. By the time the next crew swapped with his that afternoon, they were scarcer: “One every 30 minutes, roughly,” Ulibarri recalled. At that point, Battalion Chief Martin Mullen, who was running the mop-up operation, had walked three laps around the perimeter of the fire. He recalled one hot spot he saw about 10 a.m., which crews hit with water. Later in the afternoon, Mullen did his fourth and last loop and left the area for good. He decided to leave the hoses out overnight, just in case. Over the next two days, a series of communication failures and questionable decisions led crews to leave the area prematurely, with embers from the small Jan. 1 fire later reigniting into the devastating Palisades fire. A firefighter picking up hoses on Jan. 2 found crackling, red-hot …

Madalina Kilroy/The Epoch Times During the latest hearing on Capitol Hill, Republicans tried to pin down when the two Democratic leaders were alerted to the fraud, why payments continued afterward, and what role politics may have played. Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) summed up the scandal this way: “While whistleblowers were silenced, fraudsters got rich.” Comer chairs the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, which has now held two hearings on Minnesota fraud cases this year. 🚨 JUST IN: House Oversight Chair James Comer affirms whistleblowers testified UNDER OATH that they spent YEARS warning Tim Walz …

Hillary Clinton Epstein testimony descends into farce as she turns tables on Trump | US | News

Hillary Clinton’s Jeffrey Epstein testimony descended into chaos (Image: AP) Hillary Clinton’s Jeffrey Epstein deposition descended into chaos after she dramatically turned the tables on Donald Trump in a fiery opening statement. The closed-door deposition of the former US Secretary of State commenced on Thursday in Chappaqua, New York. US lawmakers are taking two days of depositions which will also include former President Bill Clinton. The questioning forms part of a congressional investigation into convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. In a fiery opening statement, Mrs Clinton turned the tables on Republicans, accusing them of targeting her while failing to investigate US President Donald Trump. She previously told the committee she has no memory of ever meeting Epstein, the disgraced financier who killed himself in 2019 while facing charges for sexually abusing and trafficking underage girls. Hillary Clinton says she has no new information on Jeffrey Epstein in testimony excoriating Republicans

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told the House Oversight Committee on Thursday she has no new information about Jeffrey Epstein and his co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell, criticizing Republicans’ handling of their investigations into the late convicted sex offender. “I had no idea about their criminal activities. I do not recall ever encountering Mr. Epstein. I never flew on his plane or visited his island home or offices,” she said in the opening statement, which she posted on X and delivered during a closed-door hearing with lawmakers. In her opening statement, Clinton accused the panel of engaging in partisan “fishing expeditions” by forcing her and her husband to sit for depositions, and said they are interviewing the wrong people. “[Y]ou have compelled me to testify, fully aware that I have no knowledge that would assist your investigation, in order to distract attention from President [Donald] Trump’s actions and cover them up despite legitimate calls for answers,” she wrote in the statement. “If this committee is serious about learning the truth about Epstein’s trafficking crimes, it would …

Plaintiff’s testimony delayed a day in landmark social media addiction trial

LOS ANGELES — The plaintiff in a landmark social media addiction trial is now expected to take the stand Thursday after other witnesses’ testimony ran overtime Wednesday. A 20-year-old woman identified in court by her initials, K.G.M., is the first to take major social media companies to trial over the harms she says the tech platforms inflicted on her mental health as a child. Her bellwether case in Los Angeles County Superior Court could set a legal precedent for whether social media platforms are liable for mental health issues in children. But her anticipated testimony was delayed after lawyers continued questioning K.G.M.’s former therapist, Victoria Burke, into the afternoon. Burke said her former patient experienced body dysmorphia and social phobia as a young teenager. Burke testified that she doesn’t think social media was the sole driver of K.G.M.’s mental health issues but that she does suspect it played a part. “I believe it was a contributing factor, not a causation factor,” Burke said of social media’s role in K.G.M.’s anxiety when she worked with her …

In War-Weary Kyiv, Wounded Ukrainian Veterans Turn Epic Poetry Into Living Testimony

In War-Weary Kyiv, Wounded Ukrainian Veterans Turn Epic Poetry Into Living Testimony

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Sitting in a circle the day before opening night, Ukrainian war veterans and drama students took turns reading their lines from a script that traveled centuries to reach them. At the center was Olha Semioshkina, directing the group through her adaptation of “Eneida” by Ivan Kotliarevskyi — an 18th-century Ukrainian reimagining of Virgil’s “Aeneid.” This production, though, had a modern-day message about resilience in the face of the war that’s nearing its fourth year since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The actors — men and women in their 20s to 60s — included Ukrainian military veterans who had returned from the front with amputations, severe burns and sight loss. Others had endured war on the homefront. Many had never set foot on a stage before this play. The production was created by Theater of Veterans, an organization founded by members of Ukraine’s Territorial Defense Forces that provides theatrical training and stage opportunities for former service members as part of their reintegration and recovery. It took more than a year to prepare …

Mark Zuckerberg Tries to Play It Safe in Social Media Addiction Trial Testimony

Mark Zuckerberg Tries to Play It Safe in Social Media Addiction Trial Testimony

Zuckerberg repeatedly fell back on accusing Lanier of “mischaracterizing” his previous statements. When it came to emails, Zuckerberg typically objected based on how old the message was, or his lack of familiarity with the Meta employees involved. “I don’t think so, no,” he replied when directed to clarify if he knew Karina Newton, Instagram’s head of public policy in 2021. And Zuckerberg never failed to point out when he wasn’t actually on an email thread entered as evidence. Perhaps anticipating these detached and repetitive talking points from Zuckerberg—who claimed over and over that any increased engagement from a user on Facebook or Instagram merely reflected the “value” of those apps—Lanier early on suggested that the CEO has been coached to address these issues. “You have extensive media training,” he said. “I think I’m sort of well-known to be pretty bad at this,” Zuckerberg protested, getting a rare laugh from the courtroom. Lanier went on to present Meta documents outlining communication strategies for Zuckerberg, describing his team as “telling you what kind of answers to give,” …
