‘Euphoria’ Star on That Surprise Death and His First Job on ‘The Wire’

[This story contains spoilers from the third episode of Euphoria season three.] The first time Darrell Britt-Gibson appeared on our screens, he killed a beloved character on one of the greatest TV shows ever: The Maryland native had joined The Wire in its fourth season as Darius “O-Dog” Hill, a member of the crew backing rising gang leader Marlo Stanfield (Jamie Hector) — and who promptly killed Preston “Bodie” Broadus (J.D. Williams), whom viewers had been following since the pilot.  “People still haven’t forgiven me for that — my own mom has a problem with me for that one,” Britt-Gibson says with a laugh. “Going out in the world in Baltimore, and just in general, people did not like me. It was a very visceral reaction, people not liking me. I was unaware of the magnitude of the show.” Now 20 years later, Britt-Gibson is back on an HBO hit, again circling various crime underworlds and again spending a lot of time with some OG fan favorites — in this case, no less than the series protagonist. …

‘The Wire,’ ‘Veep’ Actor Was 71

Isiah Whitlock Jr., the actor who portrayed State Senator Clayton “Clay” Davis on HBO’s The Wire, has died. He was 71. Whitlock’s manager, Brian Liebman, announced his death Tuesday on Instagram. “It is with tremendous sadness that I share the passing of my dear friend and client Isiah Whitlock Jr. If you knew him – you loved him,” Liebman wrote. “A brilliant actor and even better person. May his memory forever be a blessing. Our hearts are so broken. He will be very, very missed.” Born in Indiana in 1954, Whitlock began studying theater at Southwest Minnesota State University. Following his 1976 graduation, he attended San Francisco’s American Conservatory Theater and earned his first onscreen credit in the 1981 TV movie A Christmas Carol. Whitlock went on to appear in several projects led by Spike Lee, including 25th Hour, She Hate Me, Red Hook Summer, Chi-Raq, BlacKkKlansman and Da 5 Bloods. In 2002, he joined The Wire as the corrupt state senator Clayton “Clay” Davis, a role he played through the series’ end in 2008. “Today I Learned Of The Passing …
