Is there a more fair way to sell World Cup tickets? : Planet Money : NPR

Michael Steele/Getty Images Last October, I had a decision to make. Did I want to spend around $775 on World Cup tickets? For the first time since 1994, the men’s World Cup is being held in the U.S., as well as in Mexico and Canada. I had just hours to decide. At this point, I also began to question the economic logic of FIFA’s approach to World Cup tickets. Was FIFA, as soccer’s governing body and the guardian of the beautiful game, bungling the ticket sales? For millions of soccer fans, buying World Cup tickets has been an ordeal. My friends and I had signed up for updates from soccer’s governing body, FIFA, and their emails about how to buy tickets felt a bit like receiving the fine print of an insurance policy in monthly digests. First there was a presale—but it was sponsored by Visa and only for people with Visa cards, and it was a lottery. Winning the lottery didn’t get you a ticket, though. You won the chance to buy a ticket. …

When should I buy plane tickets, as Iran war disrupts travel : NPR

The U.S. and other nations have agreed to tap into oil reserves, but the move might not do much to bring jet fuel prices down rapidly, an expert tells NPR. It’s one way violence in the Middle East can affect flights around the world. Here, an Emirates airliner prepares to land at Dubai’s main airport on Sunday. AFP via Getty Images hide caption toggle caption AFP via Getty Images The war in Iran is rattling the aviation industry, from flight cancellations to rising costs for jet fuel. So if you’re planning to travel this spring or summer, should you grab a ticket now, or wait? “You should go ahead and book,” says Sean Cudahy, an aviation reporter at The Points Guy travel and personal finance website. It’s generally recommended to buy international flights further in advance than domestic trips. But in the current circumstances, Cudahy says he would go ahead and book even domestic flights. His advice is a sign of how the Middle East conflict is rippling outward, affecting prices and itineraries around the …

Sam Smith Castro Theatre San Francisco Residency Tickets: Buy Online

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, The Hollywood Reporter may receive an affiliate commission. Sam Smith has kicked off his residency at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco, with the singer’s 20-date stint helping to officially usher in a new era for the historic landmark. First erected in 1922, the Castro closed in 2024 for a reported $41 million renovation project. But the century-old Spanish-style Baroque theatre is open for business — and music — once again, with its gilded ceiling and ornamental walls restored to its original design, while seating is now reconfigurable for different events, including 650 seats that can be removed to create more standing room space (like for Smith’s concert). More importantly, city officials hope the re-opening of the Castro Theatre will also help revive the predominantly queer neighborhood it sits in, which shares a name with the venerable venue. “Do you guys realize how special this street is?” Smith asked the sold-out crowd, during night two of their residency last week. …

Labour blasted as ‘simpler’ train tickets push fares up | Politics | News

Train passengers are being landed with higher fares despite Labour pledges to keep travel costs down. Sir Keir Starmer’s Government is under fire for so-called ticket “simplification” pushing up prices. Government-owned operator LNER admits people will “sometimes” pay more under its “simpler fares” structure when “customer driven demand pushes prices”. The Conservatives said the prospect of higher prices at times when more people want to travel has “blown apart” promises to make train travel cheaper. They claim “some passengers are now paying more than 40% more for comparable journeys than they did just 18 months ago”. The Tories accuse ministers of failing to “assess whether stripping away cheaper fare options could make fare evasion worse”. Last month the Government admitted the “Rail Delivery Group (RDG) has estimated annual revenue lost to fraud and ticketless travel is at least £350-£400million.” The Conservatives warn Labour is “redesigning the fare system blind, without testing whether squeezing out cheaper tickets risks pushing more passengers towards non-payment”. Shadow Transport Secretary Richard Holden said: “Labour promised to freeze rail fares, yet …
