Twelve Tons of KitKats Were Stolen, and You Can Help Find Them

Twelve Tons of KitKats Were Stolen, and You Can Help Find Them

On March 29, Kit Kat posted on Instagram that 12 tons of KitKats (about 413,793 bars) were stolen between Italy and Poland. Both the chocolate bars and the truck carrying them vanished and remain missing. Nestle is now searching for the hijacked KitKat bars, and it’s asking the public to help find them.  If the thief is trying to sell the candy, they might get tripped up. Nestle knows the serial numbers of the missing bars. Since the theft happened in Europe, candy sold in the US probably isn’t affected. These aren’t the traditional KitKats, but special-edition car-shaped KitKats developed for a Formula 1 promotion. A representative for KitKat did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Stolen KitKat Tracker KitKat launched the Stolen KitKat Tracker on April 1, though it’s no April Fools’ Day joke. To use the Stolen KitKat Tracker, enter the 8-digit batch number from your candy to determine if it’s from the missing group. KitKat will then provide specific instructions on what to do next, including how to submit the …

Rockin’ farm fields suck up tons of CO2

Rockin’ farm fields suck up tons of CO2

The people of Sarekha Khurd have grown rice for longer than they can remember. A few hundred families live in this village in north-central India. Trees separate their little fields, which are slanty rectangles of land. As those fields turn gold each fall with ripened rice, a sweet smell perfumes the air. Harvest time is nearing. But these fields aren’t just growing grain: They’re also capturing carbon. Farmers here are part of a worldwide effort to combat climate change. Its goal is to pull billions of tons of planet-warming carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air. In Sarekha Khurd, this effort starts in May. That’s when trucks rumble down dirt roads, dumping out huge piles of crushed, volcanic rock. Each load brings several hundred tons of gray basalt. Farmers sprinkle the dust-sized particles onto their fields. Weeks later, when the monsoon rains arrive, they plant rice. The dust comes from rock usually used in road building. People mine this basalt from a nearby quarry. It doesn’t look like anything special. Explainer: CO2 and other greenhouse gases …

‘Narco-Submarine’ Carrying 4 Tons of Cocaine Captured by Mexico’s Navy

‘Narco-Submarine’ Carrying 4 Tons of Cocaine Captured by Mexico’s Navy

The Mexican Navy announced on Thursday that it had seized a semi-submersible vessel carrying nearly four tons of cocaine. The seizure of 179 packages of the drug is the latest result in an effort to curb maritime trafficking of illicit substances across the Pacific Ocean—an issue also being addressed by the United States through a series of deadly attacks in the Caribbean against vessels suspected of carrying drugs. Omar García Harfuch, Mexico’s secretary of security, reported in a post on X that the interception of the vessel—known as a “narco-submarine”—took place in Mexican waters near Manzanillo, in the state of Colima. Three people have been arrested over suspected ties to the shipment. The Mexican navy (Semar) said that the operation involved an ocean patrol vessel, two fixed-wing aircraft, two rotary-wing aircraft, and two interceptor boats. It also received support from US Northern Command and the Joint Interagency Task Force, which provided intelligence to locate the target at sea. Harfuch emphasized that this action adds to other seizures made during the past week, which have resulted …

Smarter farming could pull billions of tons of carbon from the air

Smarter farming could pull billions of tons of carbon from the air

Fields of wheat, rice and corn might feel far from climate negotiations, yet they hold surprising power over the planet’s future. A new international study led by researchers at Queensland University of Technology argues that the world’s farms could become one of the biggest tools in the fight against global warming if you change how they work. Lead author Professor Claudia Vickers said the basic starting point is simple but huge. “Global croplands are estimated to capture more than 115 gigatons of carbon dioxide annually through photosynthesis,” she said. That number is staggering. It means your food system already pulls massive amounts of carbon out of the air every year. Her team’s message is hopeful and blunt at the same time. “Even modest improvements in how crops capture, use, and store that carbon, if applied across existing farmland, could deliver huge climate benefits.” Cartoon representation of the Earth–Space battery concept (Schramski et al. 2015).
