Pope will inaugurate Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia tower and meet with migrants in June trip to Spain
ROME (AP) — Pope Leo XIV will inaugurate the soaring central tower of Barcelona’s famed Sagrada Familia basilica when he visits Spain next month in a weeklong trip that will also take him to a migrant reception center in the Canary Islands, the Vatican said Wednesday. The June 6-12 visit will first bring Leo to Madrid for meetings with the government, parliament and King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia. He will also preside over a prayer vigil with young people that will recall the last time a pope visited Spain: 2011, when Madrid hosted World Youth Day with Pope Benedict XVI. In Barcelona, Leo will be on hand to mark the 100th anniversary, on June 10, of the death of Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, who designed Sagrada Familia, the world’s tallest church. ‘The air resounds with a Babel’s Tower of languages’: why I wrote a novel based in Victoria Square, Athens | Athens holidays
After my father’s will banned me and my siblings from his funeral, I wrote a novel about some brothers and sisters stealing their dad in his coffin. The emotions were drawn from my painful experiences, but I invented the characters and the tragi-comic narrative in Stealing Dad. Despite growing up in England, I’ve lived in and written about Athens for 25 years, and it came naturally to create several Greek characters. Alekos is a wild sculptor who dies in London, and his daughter Iris (one of seven dispersed half-siblings) lives off Victoria Square – one of Athens’ most fascinating corners. In the 1960s, Plateia Viktorias was a fashionable neighbourhood with the fanciest restaurants, shops and theatres. Townhouses from the interwar period were being demolished and Athenians were occupying the new six-storey apartment blocks so fast that construction dust and the constant drilling were the main problem. Today, through wrought-iron and glass doors, elegant, marble-lined halls reveal concierges’ desks and traces of a vanished bourgeois life. A section of the original staircase from the Eiffel Tower will go up for auction in Paris on May 21, CNN reported, offering collectors the chance to take home a fragment of one of the world’s most recognizable tourist attractions. Aspiring bidders will need more than just deep pockets—the estimate is set at $140,000-$175,000—they’ll also need deep real estate. The piece stands nearly nine-feet-tall and spans more than five feet across. SINGAPORE: Tower Transit Singapore has paid tribute to its employee, whose body was found on Mar 30 after a collision between a pleasure craft and a supply vessel near the Southern Islands. The man, identified as Chua Muhammad Syafidi, was reported missing after the Mar 27 incident. In a Facebook post on Sunday (Apr 5), Tower Transit said about 100 staff members gathered to bid farewell to Syafidi. Syafidi had worked at the company for 10 years. “Through dedication and hard work, he rose from vehicle technician to engineering supervisor,” Tower Transit said. “He was a talented and creative engineer who loved to learn and grow.” The bus operator added that Syafidi had just completed a part-time diploma in operations and engineering management, and was looking forward to his graduation ceremony on May 5.
