After tragedy at Swiss resort bar, residents express ‘anger’ and ‘shame’

Bouquets of flowers and candles were placed in tribute to the victims of the fire at Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana (Switzerland) on January 6, 2026. FABRICE COFFRINI/AFP A feeling of “anger,” “shame,” and incomprehension spread through the streets and shops of Crans-Montana on Tuesday, January 6, six days after the tragedy at Le Constellation bar, where a fire claimed 40 lives and injured 116 people during the night of Wednesday, December 31, to Thursday, January 1. “In my apartment, just like in my shop, they come to check my outlets or my chimney every two years,” said a shopkeeper, who requested anonymity, like the vast majority of residents and regulars of the Valais winter sports resort in Switzerland. “How is that possible?” “That” referred to the statements by the town’s mayor Nicolas Féraud, who admitted during a morning press conference that Crans-Montana’s municipal services had not carried out any safety inspections at Le Constellation since 2019, even though local regulations require annual checks. “Shocked by the mayor’s lack of answers to the families,” an …

Abdullah Nattat was once an energetic young man working as a singer and a performer, hosting wedding celebrations and entertaining children. The 30-year-old now sits in a wheelchair, both of his legs amputated. Recommended Stories list of 3 itemsend of list “At this time every year, I would usually be busy performing at Christmas and New Year’s celebrations held by Gaza’s hotels and restaurants before the war,” Abdullah told Al Jazeera with a sad smile. In September, as an Israeli military ground operation began in northern Gaza, Abdullah was displaced from Beit Lahiya in the north to an apartment belonging to relatives in central Gaza City. There, as he walked among a group of pedestrians near the as-Saraya Junction, an air strike hit. Charlie Kirk (R) with Ben CarsonCredit: Gage Skidmore, Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 2.0 Charlie Kirk! That name says so much, now. I am sure that we should be very careful about adding our comments to the sad story of a recent killing. I have a neighbor who is a Christian, like me, and he liked to follow information from and about Charlie Kirk, before he was killed. My neighbor is now very sad, and I respect him. In general, Charlie Kirk was a successful activist and a persuasive speaker, and now that he is dead, there are some huge arguments. There are many people who seem to be happy that Mr. Kirk is now dead, and they seem to be celebrating. That is not my opinion. There is at least one website where people can report ghoulish people who are making happy comments about the death of Charlie Kirk. You can find more, with a search, but it’s a topic I don’t want to drill into. I can report that many people have lost their jobs, …
