“Some were just walking on the street, some were killed in their own homes, some were tortured and raped,” Kallas said, adding the slaughter was just one example of Russia’s barbarity throughout the war and could not go “unpunished.” She added that the EU was “pushing forward” with creating a special tribunal to prosecute Kremlin officials over the full-scale invasion, along with a “claims commission” that will allow individuals to petition for Russian war damages. Ukraine signed an agreement with the Council of Europe to establish the tribunal in June last year, but it still needs legal and financial backing from states in Europe and beyond to get off the ground. All EU countries but Hungary put out a joint statement of support on Tuesday, welcoming the tribunal’s eventual “operationalisation.” Budapest, which is among Moscow’s closest allies in the EU, continues to use its veto to block a €90 billion tranche of funds for Ukraine over a bitter dispute with Kyiv about a pipeline transporting oil from Russia. Hungary is also refusing to approve the bloc’s 20th package of sanctions on the Kremlin. Kallas said there had been no breakthrough on the funds or sanctions, but that she hoped to …
Former hedge fund manager Crispin Odey “bullied” colleagues not to introduce measures at his firm to protect women, a tribunal heard. The hearing on Thursday also heard accusations that the 67-year-old threatened to close the company, Odey Asset Management (OAM), in order to put pressure on its governing body. Mr Odey is taking legal action against the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) after it fined him £1.8m and banned him from the UK finance industry last year over how he handled disciplinary processes into his alleged sexual misconduct at OAM. FCA lawyers told the Upper Tribunal in London that a report published by law firm Simmons & Simmons in January 2021 found at least 46 historical allegations of inappropriate conduct by Mr Odey towards female employees between 2003 and 2020. He was then alleged to have breached the terms of a final written warning by sexually harassing a temporary receptionist in 2021. Image: Mr Odey arriving at the tribunal in London earlier this week. What role has the United Kingdom played in Israel’s war on Gaza? We meet those who say it’s complicit in atrocities committed there. During the Gaza war, protesters have flooded the streets of major British cities, calling on their leaders to cut off the supply of weapons and other military hardware to Israel. The United Kingdom’s relationship with its ally is under scrutiny. Jeremy Corbyn, a British MP, set up the Gaza Tribunal to examine whether the UK’s support for Israel amounts to complicity. Doctors and aid workers gave emotional accounts of the horrors they saw while working in the Gaza Strip, and journalists presented evidence of weapons shipments and spy flights allegedly operating from a nearby British air force base. All were making the case that the UK’s unwavering support for Israel is no longer legally or morally justifiable. In its final report, published on March 16, the Gaza Tribunal said the UK has failed in its duty to prevent genocide and has been complicit in atrocities. It also recommended that the UK end …
A tribunal has rebuked the newly installed archbishop of Canterbury, Sarah Mullally (pictured, right), for her role in a safeguarding complaint against the archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell (pictured, left). The complaint against Cottrell was brought by a victim of sexual abuse perpetrated by David Tudor, then a vicar in Reigate. The victim was 15 when the abuse started in the early 1980s. The victim alleged that Cottrell, as bishop of Chelmsford between 2010 and 2020, twice inappropriately reappointed Tudor as an area dean in the diocese, and wrongly praised him as a ‘Rolls Royce’ priest. Cottrell was briefed about Tudor’s offences when he was first appointed bishop of Chelmsford. Tudor had been banned from ministry for five years in 1988 after he was convicted of sexual offences against other girls. The convictions were later quashed on technical grounds. Former archbishop of Canterbury George Carey advocated for Tudor to be allowed to return to ministry. In 2024, Carey resigned the priesthood after Tudor was finally permanently banned from the priesthood following furthers allegations of abuse, …

An employment tribunal has delivered its judgment in the case of a group of nurses who complained about a transgender colleague’s use of a female changing room. The tribunal found that the nurses from Darlington Memorial Hospital suffered harassment from their NHS trust, with the “effect of violating the dignity of the claimants and creating a hostile, intimidating, humiliating and degrading environment for them”. The nurses took County Durham and Darlington NHS Trust to an employment tribunal over a policy that allowed their colleague, Rose Henderson – who was born male but identifies as a woman – to use the facilities. Rose Henderson had used the room since starting at the hospital as a student in 2019. The complaints from other nurses began in 2023. “Women were in distress – their dignity and privacy was being violated,” Bethany Hutchinson, one of the nurses who brought the case, had told Sky News. “Women should be allowed to have safe single sex facilities. Particularly when you’re just about to start a shift – we have to undress …
