Politics Home Article | Tony Blair Think Tank Calls For Scrapping The Triple Lock

(Alamy) 3 min read1 hr The Tony Blair Institute (TBI) think tank has called for the government to scrap the “unaffordable” triple lock on state pensions. In a new report published on Friday, the think tank said current pensions policy is unsustainable and outdated and should be replaced by a more flexible alternative. “Britain’s state pension system was built for a different era. We can’t keep pouring money into a system that is increasingly unaffordable,” said Tom Smith, TBI Director of Economic Policy. Under the existing policy, pensions are guaranteed to rise by the highest of inflation, average earnings and 2.5 per cent. However, there have been growing warnings that factors like people living longer, a falling birth rate and high inflation levels mean that it is not sustainable in the long term. The TBI report points to the number of pensioners in Britain being expected to rise from 12.6m this year to 19m in 2070, with spending on the state pension expected to increase from 5 per cent of GDP to 7.5 per cent, costing the Treasury an …

Politics Home | Labour MP Calls For Pension Triple Lock Reform To Fund Defence Spending Boost

4 min read19 min A Labour backbencher has called for the pension triple lock to be reformed to help fund a rise in defence spending. Graeme Downie, who was elected as the Labour MP for Dunfermline and Dollar in 2024, wrote in The House this weekend that the government should be brave enough to ask older people who “benefited financially from peace” to make a greater contribution to future national security.  “If there is to be a true whole of society approach to defence, and younger people could be expected to die, what are older people willing to sacrifice?” he wrote. Prime Minister Keir Starmer is under pressure to expedite plans to raise defence spending amid warnings that international conflicts pose an increasing threat to the UK. As things stand, the government is committed to spending 2.5 per cent of GDP on defence by 2027, with the target of reaching 3 per cent in the next parliament. Starmer has recently indicated that he is willing to go further, but is facing growing calls, including from senior Labour figures, to detail how he will …

Experts believe diabetes may triple someone’s dementia risk. Here’s why

Get the Well Enough newsletter with Harry Bullmore for tips on living a healthier, happier and longer life Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore As increasing numbers of people with type 1 diabetes live into old age, a large new study has found they face almost three times the risk of developing dementia compared to people without the condition – raising urgent questions about how the disease affects the brain over time. To put this in context, of the 283,772 people in the study, 5,442 had type 1 diabetes. Of those, 144 people went on to get dementia. That is 2.6% of that group. Of those without diabetes, only 0.6% went on to develop dementia. Once the researchers had accounted for factors like age and education level, the overall increased risk was about three times higher. A similar trend appeared for type 2 diabetes. Those people had roughly a twofold higher risk. It is important to note that this data was taken from a health …

Police failed to arrest Nottingham triple killer on warrant months before attacks, inquiry hears | UK News

Police failed to execute a warrant to arrest a violent schizophrenic before he went on to kill three people in Nottingham, an inquiry has heard. Valdo Calocane killed University of Nottingham students Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar, both 19, as well as 65-year-old caretaker Ian Coates, and attempted to kill three more people in the June 2023 attacks. The arrest warrant was issued more than nine months before the killings in September 2022, after Calocane did not attend a hearing at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court over accusations of assaulting an emergency worker. He went on to assault two colleagues at a factory in Kegworth, Leicestershire, a month before the attacks, but was not arrested by Leicestershire Police at that time. Image: Valdo Calocane. Pic: PA In an opening statement on behalf of the relatives of those killed in the attacks, Tim Moloney KC said any attempt by police to claim arresting Calocane would not have made a difference would be “cowardly, highly offensive and insulting”. “If the police do say that executing a warrant for his …
