The Trump administration is running a war with a skeleton crew, a small group of insiders and officials whose official roles seem to matter less than their loyalty to Donald Trump. When the president was making his decision to go to war with Iran, he met in mid-February with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Other people in the room included White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles; the secretaries of State and Defense, Marco Rubio and Pete Hegseth; and CIA Director John Ratcliffe. During this crucial meeting, Vice President Vance was out of town. Also missing? Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, the person who is in charge of the entire U.S. intelligence community, and who is technically Ratcliffe’s superior. One might be tempted to think that the most shameless shape-shifter in the Trump administration is JD Vance. After all, the vice president once called Donald Trump America’s Hitler, and ten years later, he is one of the president’s most ardent supporters. But Vance is a piker compared to the Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. No one in American politics is more brazenly hypocritical — and considering the contenders in the Republican Congress, that’s saying something.  Gabbard appeared last week before the House Select Intelligence Committee and the Senate Intelligence Committee and, along with FBI Director Kash Patel and CIA Director John Ratcliffe, delivered the worldwide threats assessment. After ordering the Iranian general Qassem Soleimani killed in 2020, Donald Trump claimed that the military officer had been “plotting imminent and sinister attacks on American diplomats and military personnel.” But that justification didn’t pass muster with then–Democratic Representative Tulsi Gabbard. Gabbard had long been explicit in her insistence that a president cannot unilaterally decide to attack another country in anticipatory self-defense. Donald Trump’s director of national intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, was grilled during an awkward clash with US lawmakers on Wednesday, focused on the Iran war. Her tense exchange came as Russian state media branded Ms Gabbard their only “friend” in Washington. U.S. lawmakers questioned Gabbard on Wednesday after the resignation of a top counterterrorism official, Joe Kent. As she was questioned by U.S. lawmakers, Gabbard appeared to avoid answering a question about Iran’s ‘imminent nuclear threat’. Politico reported that “she’s largely been silent since the U.S. and Israel began striking Iran in late February, and she’s been kept out of military planning on Iran since the U.S. struck nuclear sites in the country last summer”.
