Foreign visitors return to Jewish pilgrimage in Tunisia under tight security

Foreign visitors return to Jewish pilgrimage in Tunisia under tight security

DJERBA, Tunisia (AP) — The annual Jewish pilgrimage to the 26-century-old El-Ghriba Synagogue in Tunisia drew a modest but notable return of international visitors this year, worshipping together under tight security after a deadly 2023 attack disrupted the festival. Visitors came from France, China, Ivory Coast and Italy, including France’s ambassador to Tunisia, a symbolic gesture after two French citizens were among those killed in the 2023 attack. A national guardsman shot and killed five people at the El-Ghriba synagogue soon after the festival that year, spreading fear among the local Jewish population and international pilgrims. Participants said about 500 people have attended this year’s pilgrimage, held on the Mediterranean island of Djerba from April 30 to May 6 to celebrate the Lag B’Omer Jewish holiday. Jews have lived in Tunisia since Roman times, and the pilgrimage remains central to the country’s small but long-standing Jewish community. Inside the synagogue, the atmosphere was calm and devotional, while also buzzing with conversations and social exchanges. Worshippers lit candles, read sacred texts and wrote wishes on eggs …

Tunisian Judge Orders Detention of Former Head of Anti-Corruption Body

Tunisian Judge Orders Detention of Former Head of Anti-Corruption Body

TUNIS, April 14 (Reuters) – A Tunisian judge ordered the detention of former anti-corruption chief Chawki Tabib on Tuesday, in the latest incident in what critics describe as an escalating crackdown on high-profile figures in the country. A judicial ‌official said the case against Tabib, ‌who is also a former head of the Tunisian Bar Association, concerned financial and administrative mismanagement during his tenure heading the anti-corruption body, which was dissolved by President Kais Saied in 2021. Boubaker Ben Thabet, the current head of the Tunisian Bar Association, told Reuters that Tabib’s detention violated legal procedures and amounted to harassment. Saied dissolved the elected parliament in 2021 and began ruling by decree, a move the opposition called a coup. In 2022, he also dissolved the Supreme Judicial Council and sacked dozens of judges. He said the steps were legal and aimed at fighting corruption. Tabib said on Sunday, before his detention, that the new case was part of a campaign targeting him. He had previously been placed under a travel ban. His detention came a …

Fifteen years after Egypt’s uprising, how faith and politics reshaped a generation

Fifteen years after Egypt’s uprising, how faith and politics reshaped a generation

(The Conversation) — Fifteen years ago, Egyptians from all walks of life took to the street to demand “bread, freedom, social justice.” They were protesting the oppressive 30-year rule of Hosni Mubarak. Egypt had been under martial law for 31 years. This meant that political opposition was silenced, and opponents were often imprisoned and tortured. Police brutality was the norm. Egypt’s economy was also weak and relied heavily on foreign aid and loans from the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. Even though the country’s per capita gross domestic product was growing, almost 25% of the population was living in poverty by 2011. Neighboring Tunisia had toppled its dictator, Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, on Jan. 14, 2011, after 28 days of protest. The Tunisian revolution’s success led to a wave of uprisings against corruption, injustice and economic inequality across the region, including the January 2011 revolution in Egypt. For many who joined the movement in Egypt, there was a newfound sense of unity, equality and nationalism. Egyptians young and old, Muslim and Christian, rich …

Tunisia Sentences Two Prominent Journalists to 3-1/2 Years in Prison

Tunisia Sentences Two Prominent Journalists to 3-1/2 Years in Prison

TUNIS, Jan ‌22 (Reuters) – A Tunisian court ‌on Thursday convicted and sentenced two prominent journalists to 3-1/2 years in prison on ‍tax evasion charges, which a family member said was retaliation for their reporting. The two journalists, Bohran Bssaies and Mourad Zghidi, worked for local radio IFM and have been imprisoned since 2024, first under ‌an eight-month sentence after being convicted of spreading false ‌news and insulting ‍the president then under pre-trial detention for the tax case. President Kais Saied has rejected accusations that he is restricting press freedom. Maryem Zghidi, Zghidi’s sister, said the family was “shocked” by Thursday’s sentence, describing the charges as baseless and retaliatory for his independent journalism. “The ruling is an attack on the press and freedom of expression”, she told Reuters. “They want to silence Mourad’s voice, but we will not remain quiet.” The families of the journalists are expected to appeal. Critics say the government has cracked down on dissent including opposition leaders, journalists, and civil society activists since Saied began ruling by decree in 2021. (Reporting …

Draw with Tunisia sends Tanzania into Cup of Nations last 16

RABAT, Dec 30 : ‌Tanzania grabbed a second-half equaliser to hold Tunisia to a 1-1 draw in their last Group C game at the Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday and book a place in the last 16. Tanzania’s second point of the tournament proved enough for them to advance as one of the four best third-placed finishers. Feisal Salum’s powerful shot three minutes into the ‌second half secured the draw after Tunisia had gone ‌ahead through a 43rd-minute penalty converted by Ismael Gharbi. Tunisia finished second in the group behind Nigeria, who beat Uganda 3-1 in Fes, with Tanzania third. Tunisia will meet Mali in Casablanca on Saturday in the last 16 while Tanzania will face hosts Morocco in the first knockout round in Rabat on Sunday.  Salum’s shot sneaked past Tunisia ‍goalkeeper Aymen Dahmen in the rain in Rabat after Tanzania defender Ibrahim Abdallah had given away a penalty for a handball offence. Gharbi tucked the kick away, having earlier hit the woodwork with a left-footed shot from the right side of the …
