Appeals court won’t let Trump freeze Gateway tunnel funding, for now

A federal appeals court allowed a judge’s order to take effect Thursday that requires the Trump administration to resume funding for the Gateway tunnel project connecting New York and New Jersey.  By declining to intervene, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit paved the way for the project to resume, at least briefly, as a lawsuit brought by the two Democratic-led states proceeds. The court will issue another ruling after holding… Source link

The U.S. Olympic bobsled team borrowed Honda’s wind tunnel for test runs

Get the Popular Science daily newsletter💡 Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. In the daredevil sport of bobsledding, intrepid athletes crammed into a narrow sleigh offer their fates to gravity as they hurl down a banked, twisty ice track. Races can be won or lost in one hundredth of a second. The sleds reach speeds of 90+ miles per hour and the athletes withstand forces up to 5g. Some call it the ‘Formula One of ice’ for its potent combination of danger and speed.  With that in mind, it makes sense that the U.S. bobsled team worked with Honda to help them achieve their best times on the biggest athletic stage of the world: the Olympics. At Honda’s East Liberty, Ohio, facility, the Team USA Bobsled and Skeleton teams prepared to compete at the Olympic Winter Games in northern Italy.  Using Honda’s $124 million, 110,000 square-foot wind tunnel, engineers reviewed data, suggested tweaks, and put their racing expertise to use. Racing is a core component of Honda’s DNA. Usually, though, it’s …

Hidden Tunnel in New York Museum was Used as ‘Safe House’ by Slaves

Hidden Tunnel in New York Museum was Used as ‘Safe House’ by Slaves

A historic Manhattan home that’s long been a window into 19th-century New York life has revealed an unexpected secret. It turns out the Merchant’s House Museum, a preserved landmark in the NoHo neighborhood, appears to have once served as a refuge for people escaping slavery. The discovery came during an inspection of a built-in dresser in a second-floor hallway. When archaeologists examined the area beneath its drawers, they found a small rectangular opening cut into the floorboards. The opening led to a concealed space, roughly 2 feet by 2 feet, complete with a ladder down to the ground floor. Experts said the secret passage suggests the house may have functioned as a “safe house” on the Underground Railroad, the secret network of abolitionists who helped enslaved people flee to freedom before and during the Civil War. Back then, danger was very real. In the years leading up to the Civil War, slave catchers, sometimes aided by civilians and law enforcement, hunted down people who had escaped bondage. The 1850 Fugitive Slave Act allowed them to …

New York Daily News | Tribune News Service | Getty Images A New York federal judge on Friday unfroze funds withheld by U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration for a $16 billion project to overhaul critical rail infrastructure in New York and ‍New Jersey. The Gateway Project will build a new ‍commuter rail tunnel between Manhattan and New Jersey ‍and repair a century-old tunnel used by more than 200,000 travelers and 425 trains daily. The existing Hudson Tunnel was heavily damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and needs frequent emergency repairs that disrupt travel on the nation’s most heavily used passenger rail line. U.S. District Judge Jeannette Vargas in Manhattan handed down the temporary ruling hours ‌after ‌New York and New Jersey said construction would halt for lack of funding. Vargas said the states were likely to succeed on their claims that a Trump administration directive freezing the funds was arbitrary and ran afoul of …

Disaster Strikes as Scientists Tunnel Into Core of Doomsday Glacier

Disaster Strikes as Scientists Tunnel Into Core of Doomsday Glacier

A scientific mission to study Antarctica’s rapidly melting Thwaites Glacier ended in heartbreak over the weekend, when researchers’ instruments became stranded somewhere within half-mile tract of glacial ice. According to the New York Times — which embedded with a team of researchers to install instruments beneath the infamous “Doomsday Glacier” — instruments meant to record data on the waters underneath Thwaites only made it about three-quarters of the way to their icy destination. To create a hole reaching the Antarctic waters, scientists and engineers blasted a borehole around one foot in diameter and about 3,300 feet deep using hot water. Unless the team kept applying hot water, they estimated it would re-freeze in just 48 hours. Their window of opportunity only lasted the weekend — if the scientists didn’t secure the instruments by Monday, an approaching front of bad weather would prevent helicopters from extracting them, effectively stranding them for an indeterminate period of time. Despite successfully dipping a set of pilot instruments into the drink before pulling them back out again, their main equipment …

Teenage boy raped girl, 12, in secluded tunnel after meeting online | UK | News

Jake Richards pleading guilty to raping a 12-year-old (Image: Dyfed-Powys Police) A teenager has been sentenced after pleading guilty to raping a 12-year-old girl in a secluded tunnel. Police said the victim “pleaded” with Jake Richards to stop the attack. The 19-year-old, of Garnswllt in the north of the Swansea valleys, had been speaking to the girl five years younger than him via Snapchat before meeting in person. While in the tunnel, Richards instigated sex and continued after the victim had told him ‘no’ several times, police said. The victim told officers she thought they were going there to talk.  Detective Sergeant Carl Pocock, of Dyfed-Powys Police, praised the victim for her “bravery”. He said: “Firstly, I would like to commend the victim, who was just 12 years old when this offence happened, for her courage in coming forward to report this offence, and for her cooperation during the subsequent investigation. “Rape, or any form of sexual abuse, is not easy to talk about, and especially at such a young age this must have been …

After Denouncing Tunnel Fits, Kyle Kuzma Has Embraced Minimalism

After Denouncing Tunnel Fits, Kyle Kuzma Has Embraced Minimalism

Kyle Kuzma is a man of many fits. The basketball star has never been afraid of a big sartorial swing, and there are years of NBA tunnel looks to prove it: red leather overalls, giant fur coats, and, of course, the giant pink Raf Simons sweater seen ’round the world. But that was before Kuzma—perhaps one of the league’s most adventurous dressers—essentially announced, in 2024, that he was stepping away from the supercharged pre-game catwalk. His declaration became major news in NBA fashion circles. And sure enough, since then, Kuzma has downshifted into a quieter mode of dressing—albeit one that’s no less intentional, or less packed with high-grade fashion. Over the past 12 months, Kuzma has embraced a more minimalist palette with ease. Relative to his kooky garments of yore, his outfits now read as calm, tonal, and deliberate. He favors monochrome looks and grounded shades: olive, brown, the minimalist classics of black and white. The luxury is still there, just stripped of excess flash. (Don’t worry, though, he still sneaks in splashy moments from …

Eurostar services resume after major Channel Tunnel disruption – POLITICO

Eurostar services resume after major Channel Tunnel disruption – POLITICO

A Eurostar spokesperson told POLITICO that services were to resume at 7 p.m. Brussels time (6 p.m. London time) on Tuesday evening, after a “partial reopening of the Channel Tunnel.” Getlink, the company that operates the Channel Tunnel, said work continued through the night to fix the power issue, allowing rail traffic in both directions to restart early Wednesday, BBC reported. Eurostar apologized to passengers for the disruption and warned of possible knock-on delays and last-minute cancellations on Wednesday as services return to normal. Travelers were urged to check their journeys before heading to stations. On Tuesday, Eurostar “strongly” advised passengers to postpone travel where possible and not to head to the train station if their train had been canceled. Source link

Eurostar services to restart after tunnel disruption caused travel chaos – POLITICO

Eurostar services to restart after tunnel disruption caused travel chaos – POLITICO

Earlier in the day, multiple issues caused transport chaos for thousands of people traveling ahead of New Year celebrations. “Due to a problem with the overhead power supply and a subsequent failed Le Shuttle train the Channel Tunnel is currently closed. Unfortunately, this means we have no choice but to suspend all services today until further notice,” the company said in an earlier update on its website. Le Shuttle, the rail service that transports vehicles and passengers through the Channel Tunnel, was experiencing delays of up to three-and-a-half hours, according to a message on its website. Eurostar had urged passengers not to travel to stations, which include Brussels-Midi, Gare du Nord in Paris and St Pancras in London. British media reported there were traffic jams in front of the tunnel terminal in Folkestone, England and stations crowded with stranded passengers in London and Paris. Eurostar denied reports about stranded train passengers in the tunnel. “It is a broken shuttle (LeShuttle) that has now been moved out of the tunnel,” a spokesperson said. The Channel Tunnel links Great …
