Jesuit artist’s exhibition ‘Twilight of the Idols’ finds new home at the Church of St. Francis Xavier after sudden Sheen Center cancellation

Originally scheduled for The Sheen Center, the exhibition now opens in the parish in partnership with Xavier High School, following concerns about the work NEW YORK — The Church of St. Francis Xavier and Xavier High School have stepped in to present “Nicholas Leeper, SJ: Twilight of the Idols,” an exhibition originally scheduled at the Sheen Center for Thought and Culture, which canceled the show following concerns about how the work might be received. The Church of St. Francis Xavier and Xavier High School are proud to provide a new home for the exhibition in support of Leeper and the way his work provokes, examines, and seeks to deepen the relationship between faith, culture, and a life of prayer. The exhibition will be on view from May 9 through May 29, with an opening reception following the 5:00 p.m. Mass on Saturday, May 9. The exhibition’s central work, Madonna and Child (Tomatokos), reimagines Mary as a mid-century housewife from a 1950s Campbell’s soup advertisement, holding a can of tomato soup in place of the infant Jesus. …

Twilight of the ‘Cougar’

Twilight of the ‘Cougar’

This article contains spoilers for Season 1 of Age of Attraction. No label really existed to describe my mother when in 1965, at the age of 27, she met the man who would become my father, a baby-faced guy who had just turned 18. But there were plenty of stereotypes. In The Second Sex, first published in France in 1949, Simone de Beauvoir had written of the older woman who pursues “fresh flesh” because young men are the “only ones” she can hope will feel desire for a “maternal mistress.” The woman does so, too, to combat the anxiety of aging, de Beauvoir wrote, felt by “the one whose life is already finished, even though death is not imminent.” Ouch. Hackneyed ideas about older women attracted to younger men have of course persisted into the 21st century. In 2003, after Demi Moore began dating Ashton Kutcher, who was 15 years her junior, celebrity weeklies weren’t the only ones that had a field day with the couple’s romance; national news outlets tossed around phrases such as …

The looks came in dusky blue and green tones, with pops of orange, oxblood and yellow. Tight dresses in dark leather had asymmetrical zips revealing a contrasting shirt underneath, while long brown overcoats featured huge sheepskin collars. Aviator jackets and trench coats were paired with glossy cycle shorts made out of lambskin.  Ostrich leather was used throughout for jackets, jodhpurs, and an orange biker-inspired jumpsuit that was zipped up the front and belted at the waist. Tailoring featured double-breasted jackets and cigarette trousers in browns and iridescent burgundy. The Oscar-nominated actor confirmed the news to Architectural Digest, saying she was “fascinated by broken-down old theaters”. “I didn’t realise I was looking for a theater until this place came to my attention. Then it was like a gunshot went off and the race was on. I ran toward it with everything I had,” she said. The theater opened in 1925 and closed after nearly a century in operation. It was designed by Lewis Arthur Smith and began as a vaudeville and silent-film house before shifting to mainstream releases. It was eventually subdivided into a triplex in the 1980s. Owner Dan Akarakian told the Los Angeles Times in March 2024 the theatre was unable …

Kristen Stewart would consider a return to Twilight in different role

Kristen Stewart has said she would be open to returning to the Twilight franchise, but not as Bella Swan. The actor, who recently made her directorial debut in The Chronology of Water, was catapulted to fame after the release of the 2008 vampire film based on the popular Stephenie Meyer book series. Speaking recently to Entertainment Tonight about how she “would love” to direct a reboot of Twilight, the Love Lies Bleeding star said: “I love what Catherine [Hardwicke] did, I love what Chris [Weitz] did, I love what all of the directors did with the movies.” She continued: “They were so themselves and weird and kind of like, squirrelly, and just so present in that time when they didn’t really know what they were yet, like before they blew up.” She added: “I know; imagine if we had a huge budget and a bunch of love and support, I don’t know. I would love to readapt – yeah, sure, I’ll do the remake. I’m doing it, I’m committed.” Stewart starred in the vampire franchise …
