Kevin Durant Improving but Game 4 Status Vs. Lakers Unclear as Rockets Face Elimination, Udoka Says

HOUSTON (AP) — Houston coach Ime Udoka said Saturday that injured star Kevin Durant was doing better but his status for Game 4 against the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday night was still unclear with the Rockets facing elimination. “He’s getting treatment still around the clock,” Udoka said. “I think there’s some soreness and (he’s) pushed a lot of swelling out, but it’ll be a matter of if he can go. We’ll try it out I’m sure tomorrow morning and before the game, and we’ll know his status then.” Udoka was asked how likely he believes it is that Durant will play Sunday as the Rockets try to avoid being swept in the best-of-seven Western Conference series. “Every day that goes by, the likelihood goes up,” he said. “But I thought he might be OK (Friday) based on shootaround and that’s different going half speed and then ramping it up right before a game. And so you really can’t tell, but he’s doing everything he can to get back.” Durant missed the opener of the …

Trump Is Claiming Victory, Even As What Exactly America Won Remains Unclear

WASHINGTON — Even as President Donald Trump declares a victory in his war against Iran, what precisely the United States has won remains unclear, while the purported loser may be better off in key respects than it was 40 days ago. “The world has just witnessed a historically swift and successful military triumph,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt proclaimed at a press briefing on Wednesday. “Operation Epic Fury was a historic and overwhelming victory on the battlefield, a capital ‘V’ military victory,” Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said at the Pentagon. While the 39 days of air assaults by the United States destroyed much of Iran’s air force, navy and missile and drone capability, the war Trump launched without consulting either allies or Congress has ended — or has at least paused — with little clarity. Iran’s hard-line theocracy is still intact and still in possession of its enriched uranium. Seizing that was one of the many and various reasons Trump has given for waging the war. Further, there is not even a consensus on …

Mexico’s Coastal Communities Fear More Crude Contamination as Spill Source Unclear

(Corrects surname of ecologist to Zepeda from Zepada in paragraph 5) COATZACOALCOS, Mexico, March 20 (Reuters) – Residents along Mexico’s Gulf Coast fear more crude oil will wash onto beaches in Tabasco and Veracruz states nearly a month after the ‌first signs of contamination were ‌detected, as authorities investigate the source of the spill. The contamination has affected 230 km (143 miles) of shoreline and 39 communities in the two states, according to the Gulf of Mexico Reef Corridor Network, a coalition of fishing, Indigenous and environmental groups. Many affected communities depend on fishing and tourism and worry the spill could damage their livelihoods ahead of the Easter holidays, when beaches typically attract visitors. The group said the crude has reached Ostion lagoon in Veracruz, a breeding area for fish, shrimp and clams. It has raised concerns about the lack of information on damage to wildlife and warned that coastal ecosystems must be cleaned quickly before sea turtle nesting season begins in April. “These slicks are going to keep spreading,” ecologist Alex Zepeda said during …

Unclear whether Ricky Hatton meant to take own life, coroner rules | UK News

Boxer Ricky Hatton had brain disease caused by repeated head trauma when he died, an inquest has ruled. Alison Mutch, senior coroner for South Manchester, recorded a verdict of hanging, saying he was the person who caused his own death. But she did not come to the conclusion it was suicide, saying it was unclear whether the former world champion meant to take his own life. The inquest, in Stockport, was told that Hatton was more than twice the alcohol drink drive limit at the time of his death, aged 46, in September last year. Ms Mutch said police found no notes or anything that gave any suggestion of an intent to take his life. He had been under the influence of alcohol and there were also brain changes identified by the pathologist at his post mortem as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) – a brain disease caused by repeated head trauma in contact sports like boxing. Trump’s first ‘Board of Peace’ meeting: ‘Still unclear what he’s trying to achieve’

President Donald Trump on Thursday announced $10 billion in US funding for the “Board of Peace,” initiatives as he presided over the inaugural meeting of the board, which gathered around two dozen world leaders and senior officials, including several of Trump’s authoritarian-leaning allies. However, there was little information on how the money would be used and it “remains unclear” what Trump is trying to achieve with the board, says France 24’s James Andre. Source link

Social media age verification is full of risks and unclear rewards

Social media age verification is full of risks and unclear rewards

Politicians across the aisle want social media users to submit themselves to biometric scans, increased account monitoring and share their IDs — all in the name of children’s safety online. Bipartisan bills in Congress, like the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA), and laws across the country are attempting to bar children from social media by requiring age verification to many, if not all users. Social media apps like Instagram and TikTok have long come under fire for potential harms to children and teens using their platforms. A first-of-a-kind lawsuit against Meta and Google, parent companies of Instagram and Youtube, began trial in Los Angeles Feb. 9, with the plaintiff’s attorney claiming the apps have “engineered addiction in children’s brains.” However, there isn’t conclusive evidence that using these platforms alone negatively impacts children’s mental health, as it can be hard to separate the effects of social media from the background of other social ills, like climate change and rising authoritarianism. Nevertheless, a public and private push to curb or even ban teen social media use, largely …
