new undercover drama explores tense clash between state loyalty and criminal credibility

Netflix’s latest drama Legends offers a compelling window into the criminology of undercover policing, covert surveillance and organised crime. Inspired by a real UK customs investigation, the six-part drama follows ordinary British customs officers sent deep undercover to infiltrate drug trafficking gangs. Written by Neil Forsyth (also creator of Brink’s-Mat robbery drama The Gold), Legends balances tension and realism with a measured, slow-burn pace that prioritises character over spectacle. Steve Coogan plays Don, a former undercover police officer tasked with recruiting customs officers to go undercover themselves to infiltrate drug gangs. Much of its strength rests on the central performance of Tom Burke, whose portrayal of the lead undercover officer, Guy, anchors the series emotionally. Burke brings a quiet intensity to the role, capturing the unease, vulnerability, and moral ambiguity of someone living between identities. The supporting cast also does an exceptional job, reinforcing the drama’s grounded and realistic tone, capturing the collective pressure, uncertainty and emotional toll of undercover work. Becoming a legend Unlike elite operatives, these are everyday officials thrust into extraordinary criminal …

Heroin was flooding in from northern Pakistan, through Turkish and north London crime networks, and onto the streets. Overwhelmed and seemingly out of options, the Investigation Division did something nobody saw coming. At the behest of Margaret Thatcher, they recruited a small team of their own officers, gave them false identities – “legends”, in the trade – and sent them deep into the criminal underworld. These were not trained intelligence agents. Not police detectives. They were customs officials, used to checking suitcases and occasionally confiscating Scotch. Barely overseen and with limited funding, these undercover narcs ended up seizing more than 12 tonnes of heroin, with a street value of over £1bn. If this sounds like the plot of a thriller, that’s because it …

“A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is the “Undercover Boss” of our era

“A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is the “Undercover Boss” of our era

The longest-running fantasy on TV sunnily depicts the American commoner’s relationship with the ruling class, and vice versa. It also airs on CBS. “Undercover Boss” premiered during the Great Recession, when the wage gap had yawned into a canyon. Layoffs and waves of foreclosures became the norm while the same financial institutions received government bailouts, ensuring their leadership maintained their bonuses. All told, it was a terrible look for this country’s corporate rulers. Enter this cheerful work of capitalist propaganda. Over its 11 seasons, an assortment of C-suite lords and ladies have infiltrated the ranks of their lowest-rung laborers to appreciate how hard they grind for their bread. Alarmed at the realness of their struggle, they toss their smallfolk a cash bump, a modest promotion, or maybe, if they’re really lucky, a nicer place to urinate. Rarely if ever do these minimum wage safaris net lasting structural change at the companies featured on the show. But if a person is fortunate enough to be chosen by a producer to be shadowed by their boss, they …

Modesto police detail undercover illegal gambling operation, after community complaints

The Modesto Police Department has taken to social media to share an insight into an undercover gambling and smoke shop enforcement operation, with multiple people arrested for allegedly offering illegal gambling. It was this week when the Modesto Police Department’s Crime Reduction Team (CRT) worked in coordination with Code Enforcement to conduct an operation targeting illegal online gambling and smoke shop violations. The police say this came after numerous community complaints about alleged illegal gambling activity occurring inside local businesses. “Through undercover operations, officers identified four locations that were providing access to illegal online gambling. Undercover officers opened gambling accounts at the businesses, placed wagers, and were able to both gamble and collect winnings directly from store employees. Based on these investigations, search warrants were served at each location,” the post reads.
