Lords vote to uphold decriminalisation of abortion and secure historic pardons for women – Humanists UK

Last night, the House of Lords voted to back abortion reform passed by MPs last year which will take abortion out of the English and Welsh criminal law for women in relation to their own pregnancies, voted in support of an amendment to pardon women who have been prosecuted under abortion criminal law, and fought off other anti-abortion amendments designed to limit choice and access. Humanists UK welcomes this as a milestone development for reproductive rights and applauds peers for championing and upholding dignity and autonomy.  What was voted on? In a series of votes late last night, peers voted to retain Clause 208 in the Crime and Policing Bill after anti-abortion peers tried to overturn the clause that was added to the Bill by MPs following a historic and decisive (379-137) vote to treat abortion as a healthcare issue rather than a criminal one.  In a further victory for reproductive rights, peers adopted an amendment from Baroness Thornton, a member of the All-Party Parliamentary Humanist Group (APPHG) to pardon women who currently have police …

Judges uphold decision to drop terrorism case against Kneecap member | UK News

Kneecap rapper Liam Og O hAnnaidh will not face a new terror trial after judges at the High Court rejected a Crown Prosecution Service appeal against the decision to throw out the case. The rapper, who performs under the stage name Mo Chara, was charged in May 2025 with the alleged display of a flag in support of the proscribed terrorist group Hezbollah at a gig in London on 21 November 2024. But the case against the Belfast-born Kneecap rapper was dismissed last September on technical grounds. At the time, chief magistrate Paul Goldspring told Woolwich Crown Court that the charge was “unlawful” and he had no jurisdiction to try the case – but prosecutors appealed against the decision. The High Court ruling was handed down remotely on Wednesday afternoon. Lord Justice Edis, sitting with Mr Justice Linden, said that “the judge was right to hold that he had no jurisdiction to try any summary-only offence alleged to have been committed on that date”. In the 13-page decision, Lord Justice Edis said their decision “turned …

Xi says China seeks to uphold UN-based world order

BEIJING: President Xi Jinping said Tuesday (Jan 27) that China seeks to uphold the UN-based world order, in remarks as he met Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo in Beijing. His comments come after Donald Trump unveiled plans for his new “Board of Peace” this month, which has sparked concerns the US president wants to create a rival to the United Nations. Xi told Orpo in the opulent Great Hall of the People that “China is willing to work with Finland to firmly uphold the international system with the United Nations at its core”, according to a readout by state broadcaster CCTV. While China has been invited to join Trump’s new grouping, it has not confirmed participation, and Xi has since stressed the importance of a UN-centred international order. Orpo meanwhile said he looked forward to discussing “international issues” and topics on “bilateral cooperation” with Xi. Orpo, on a four-day visit, joins a string of Western leaders who have recently courted Beijing, as Trump’s mercurial policies prompt a pivot from his allies. Source link
