Pete Hegseth’s Shameless Vice Signaling

Pete Hegseth’s Shameless Vice Signaling

This is an edition of The Atlantic Daily, a newsletter that guides you through the biggest stories of the day, helps you discover new ideas, and recommends the best in culture. Sign up for it here. The term virtue signaling refers to an annoying moral peacocking that has less to do with politics than with self-gratification. It’s the dinner guest who feels compelled to comment on the climate impact of every course. It’s the guy who annoys his colleagues during meetings with constant bits of civic guidance. (The author Richard Russo, in a 1990s satire of academic life, created a character whose nickname was “Orshee” because when anyone in a faculty meeting used he as a generic pronoun, the fellow would chirp “Or she” as a correction.) But Donald Trump and his administration have embraced the Mirror Universe version of virtue signaling. They’ve pioneered the practice of “vice signaling,” or saying insulting or odious things both as attention-seeking behavior and as a way of showcasing their supposedly transgressive political views. They aim to demonstrate strength …

Bessent Will Meet China’s Vice Premier in Paris Ahead of Trump’s Visit to Beijing

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will meet with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng on Sunday and Monday in Paris for a new round of trade talks, the Treasury Department said, paving the way for President Donald Trump’s state visit to Beijing starting March 31. The talks between He and Bessent are seen as preparatory work for the state visit that Beijing has not confirmed. The White House has said Trump is traveling to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping, and it’s widely believed that the visit aims to keep relations stable between the world’s two largest economies. “Thanks to the bonds of mutual respect between President Trump and President Xi, the trade and economic dialogue between the United States and China is moving forward,” Bessent said in a statement Thursday. “Under the guidance of President Trump, our team will continue to deliver results that put America’s farmers, workers, and businesses first.” China’s commerce ministry confirmed He’s trip to France for talks with the U.S. and said Friday the two sides are set to …

Ohio Man Charged With Threatening to Kill Vice President JD Vance and Possessing Child Abuse Files

Ohio Man Charged With Threatening to Kill Vice President JD Vance and Possessing Child Abuse Files

An Ohio man has been charged with threatening to kill Vice President JD Vance while he was visiting his home state last month. But the man’s lawyer said his health makes it unlikely he would have been able to carry out the threat. In addition to the charge for threatening Vance, prosecutors also charged Shannon Mathre with possessing digital files depicting child sexual abuse that were discovered during the investigation. That second charge carries a much stiffer potential penalty of up to 20 years in prison. The charge related to the threats could lead to a maximum five-year sentence. Lawyer Neil McElroy said that Mathre’s health challenges would have been apparent to anyone in the courtroom Friday when he pleaded not guilty to the charges, so he doesn’t think the threat charge makes sense. McElroy said he couldn’t comment on the charge related to the possession of child sexual abuse files because prosecutors haven’t yet provided any details about that at this early stage of the case. “Anyone that spends any time in a room …

Vice signaling explains Trump’s enduring appeal

Vice signaling explains Trump’s enduring appeal

Last Friday, the day before Alex Pretti was killed by Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis, Colorado Public Radio reported that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Eagle County, Colorado, had left ace of spades cards inside the cars of nine Latino immigrants they had detained. Family members found the cards, which read “Denver Field Office” and listed the address and contact information of a detention facility in the city of Aurora.  The ace of spades has a violent and racist history attached to it. During the Vietnam War, American soldiers often left the cards on the bodies of dead Viet Cong guerillas and North Vietnamese soldiers. They were a symbol, death’s calling card.  In a statement, a spokesperson from the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees the agencies tasked with carrying out Donald Trump’s wide scale immigration raids, condemned the behavior as unauthorized and promised an investigation. “Under President Trump and Secretary [Kristi] Noem, ICE is held to the highest professional standard.”  The action in Colorado is symbolic for the life-and-death morality play that is …

EU can’t relax and go back to normal with Trump, warns Germany’s vice chancellor – POLITICO

Klingbeil, who also acts as Germany’s finance minister, in particular voiced frustration over the European Commission’s handling of the Greenland crisis over the course of the past week, suggesting the Commission was not acting with enough urgency. “When I returned from Brussels on Monday, I was extremely frustrated because I had held talks with the Commission where I was given the impression that everything was great, everything was on the right track, and I don’t think that is appropriate given the situation we are in,” Klingbeil said. Klingbeil said that his frustration with the EU’s pace prompted him to reach out to his counterparts in Spain, France, the Netherlands, Italy and Poland to discuss economic competitiveness, raw materials and defense financing, among other matters, during a virtual meeting next week. “The urgency and pace that we actually need are not there at the moment, and that is something that greatly concerns me,” he said. “I’m a big fan and believer in the European Union, but I think a few countries need to take the lead now,” …

Vice President JD Vance and His Wife Usha Vance Say They Are Expecting Their Fourth Child

The couple said they were excited to share the news of their fourth child, who will join their other three young kids: Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel. Vance, 41, and his wife, 40, said in the post that both mother and baby were doing well. “During this exciting and hectic time, we are particularly grateful for the military doctors who take excellent care of our family and for the staff members who do so much to ensure that we can serve the country while enjoying a wonderful life with our children,” the post read. The news of the Republican vice president’s growing family comes as he has spent years passionately advocating for Americans to have more children. Vance repeatedly expressed alarm about declining birth rates as he launched his political career in 2021 with a bid for the U.S. Senate in Ohio. As vice president, he has continued on that mission, saying in a 2025 March for Life speech, “I want more babies in the United States of America.” The vice president has been accompanied on …

North Korea’s Kim purges vice premier, slams ‘incompetent’ officials

North Korea’s Kim purges vice premier, slams ‘incompetent’ officials

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has fired his vice premier and railed against “incompetent” officials in a rare and very public broadside against apparatchiks at the opening of a critical factory, state media said Tuesday. Vice Premier Yang Sung Ho was sacked “on the spot”, the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said, in a speech in which Kim attacked “irresponsible, rude and incompetent leading officials”. “Please, Comrade Vice Premier, resign by yourself when you can do it on your own before it is too late,” Kim reportedly said. Nuclear-armed North Korea, which is under multiple sets of sanctions over its weapons programmes, has long struggled with its moribund state-managed economy and chronic food shortages. Kim has been quick to scold lazy officials for alleged mismanagement of economic policy but such a public dismissal is very rare. Touring the opening of an industrial machinery complex on Monday, Kim blasted cadres who for “too long been accustomed to defeatism, irresponsibility and passiveness”. Yang was “unfit to be entrusted with heavy duties”, Kim said, according to …

Europe’s Greenland fears grow as US vice president dives into talks  – POLITICO

‘Fundamental disagreement’ The discussion “wasn’t so successful that we reached a conclusion where our American colleagues said, ‘Sorry, it was totally a misunderstanding, we gave up on our ambitions,’” Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen quipped to reporters after what he described as a “frank” exchange with Vance and Rubio. “There’s clearly a disagreement.”  “The president has this wish of conquering over Greenland,” Rasmussen added. “For us, ideas that would not respect territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark, or the right of self determination of the Greenlandic people, are of course totally unacceptable. And we therefore still have a fundamental disagreement. And we agree to disagree.” Talks in future must, he said, respect the “red lines” set by Greenland and Denmark. It is hoped that the working group will help lower “the temperature” on the issue when it begins its work in the coming weeks, Rasmussen added.  While Donald Trump can be distracted, some EU officials say, JD Vance appears to be more ideological in his hostility to Europe. | Aaron Schwartz/EPA The small win, …
