I replaced Task Manager, Startup apps, and Event Viewer with three better Microsoft tools

I replaced Task Manager, Startup apps, and Event Viewer with three better Microsoft tools

If something goes wrong with your PC, be it sluggish performance, slow startup issues or even frequent crashes, Windows offers a few built-in tools to know what’s wrong. For instance, Task Manager can tell you if sluggish performance is due to high disk or memory usage by a process, and Startup apps lets you measure and fix slow startup issues. Event Viewer, on the other hand, helps you know why and when your system crashed. But these tools only scratch the surface. You get the what, rarely the why. You could install third-party tools to fill that gap, but I didn’t have to. Microsoft’s own Sysinternals suite already has sharper alternatives to all three, built by the same people who know Windows internals better than anyone. Process Explorer, Autoruns, and Sysmon have replaced Task Manager, Startup apps, and Event Viewer on my setup for a while now. Process Explorer shows you what Task Manager hides A proper process tree with color-coded internals Task Manager is fine for the basics. I can glance at the Processes …

I stopped using Event Viewer to check failed logins after discovering this PowerShell trick

I stopped using Event Viewer to check failed logins after discovering this PowerShell trick

Your PC is where you keep everything from your personal documents and saved passwords to work files and even your financial accounts. So keeping it secure becomes necessary, especially if you use it in an office or any public setting. The good news is that Windows already helps you with this, not just by locking your PC with a PIN or password, but also by keeping a record of any failed sign-in attempts. Even better, finding this information is as easy as running a quick PowerShell command. Event Viewer can show failed sign-in attempts, but it’s too much work It has the data, just not the simplicity Event Viewer is a built-in Windows tool that logs everything that happens on your PC. From system warnings and app errors to security events like failed sign-in attempts, you can find it all here. The only thing is, the tool isn’t designed for quick answers, so you need to dig in to find what you’re looking for. To find details about failed sign-in attempts, open Event Viewer, and …

For years, the hit baking competition — known as The Great British Baking Show in the U.S. — has frustrated fans with its opening credits, which feature a chocolate cake topped with raspberries that many believe is missing one berry in the bottom-right corner. On Wednesday, April Fool’s Day, the series finally fixed the missing raspberry in an updated intro shared on Instagram. “We’ve made a little raspberry-shaped change for the new series,” the caption read. The clip begins with a series of fan messages about the missing berry. “BAKE OFF, EXPLAIN YOURSELVES #BERRYGATE,” one person said, while another commented: “The missing raspberry is stressing me out.” For years, The Great British Bake Off’s original title sequence (below) has received numerous complaints over …

The Chase’s Mark Labbett defends “unfair” rule after viewer complaints

The Chase’s Mark Labbett defends “unfair” rule after viewer complaints

The Chase star Mark Labbett has defended a rule after noting that viewers complained about a tactic he regularly uses. Best known as ‘The Beast’, Labbett has held the role as a Chaser since the show’s launch back in 2009. During yesterday’s episode of the ITV quiz show, Labbett faced contestants Caren and Andy in the Final Chase, beating them with only five seconds left on the clock. Speaking after his win to host Bradley Walsh, Labbett said: “Can I address something? There’s a thing on social media where people claim that it’s unfair the Chasers can jump in and interrupt you when the contestants can’t. “That is absolutely not true. The contestants can jump in whenever they like, if they’re brave enough or confident enough. I’ll put it another way, we jump in early because I had to there.” It looks as though Labbett won’t be changing his tactic anytime soon if his comments are anything to go by, so it’s likely we’ll see him use it on the recently announced spin-off show, The …

Amazon’s NFL Wild Card Game Sets Streaming Viewer Record

Amazon’s NFL Wild Card Game Sets Streaming Viewer Record

The opening round of the NFL playoffs featured several down-to-the-wire games — which brought in big audiences, including a couple of record-setting ones. Prime Video’s telecast of the Chicago Bears’ comeback victory over the Green Bay Packers averaged 31.61 million viewers, the largest audience to date for a streaming-exclusive NFL game. The previous record — which stood for all of 16 days — was 27.52 million for Netflix’s Christmas telecast of a game between the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings. The Bears-Packers game was (obviously) also an all-time high for the NFL on Prime Video. It was up by 43 percent from the 22.07 million viewers for the Amazon-owned streamer’s wild card game last year, though the latter figure doesn’t include Nielsen’s big data component. Fox Sports had the biggest game of the weekend with 41 million viewers tuning into its Sunday late afternoon contest that saw the San Francisco 49ers defeat the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. It was Fox’s biggest wild card round audience since 2015 and the largest on any network since 2022 …
