‘How a near-death experience changed my life – and introduced me to the violet flame’

‘How a near-death experience changed my life – and introduced me to the violet flame’

Violet Skies vividly remembers the moment she realised she was about to die. Driving home from work in her early twenties, she fell asleep at the wheel. Her car rolled across three lanes of motorway traffic, hit two trees, and was left crushed beyond recognition. Emergency services later told her it was “a miracle” she survived. And what happened next was set to change her life forever.  “There was this overwhelming feeling of, ‘Okay… I should have died. I haven’t died. What?’ It was almost like this sense that I had something to fulfil – like it wasn’t my time to go,” says Violet, whose work as an intuitive, healer and guide facilitating women’s circles and retreats all evolved from her near-death experience.

Violet Oon and the legacy of Singapore heritage food

Violet Oon and the legacy of Singapore heritage food

Their first restaurant, Violet Oon’s Kitchen, was a casual eatery along Bukit Timah Road serving Peranakan food with a few Western twists. It wasn’t until 2015, when the National Gallery Singapore invited them to set up a restaurant in its new premises, that the family were able to realise their goal of spotlighting Singapore’s culinary heritage. The historic venue, in what was once City Hall, was the perfect site and particularly meaningful to Oon. As a young music and arts journalist in the early 1970s, she had spent much of her time in the Ministry of Culture offices on the building’s third floor. “That was exciting for me, but also a great responsibility, because how do you interpret national food?” she recalled. “Is it hawker food? Home food? Or restaurant food?”  The short answer is, of course, all of the above.  “So I went to learn to make idlis from scratch from Indian housewives. We made chilli crab, because that’s what’s national to us, and then we had fish head curry,” she said. “Food is not only …

Violet Grohl isn’t afraid of or bothered by the ‘nepo baby’ label

Violet Grohl isn’t worried about being labelled a nepo baby. The 19-year-old musician is the daughter of Foo Fighters frontman and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, but Violet Grohl isn’t bothered by suggestions that she’s achieving success on the back of her dad’s fame. In a new interview with music magazine The Forty-Five, Violet Grohl shared: “Obviously, doors are open for me because of my last name. It’s not something I’m ever going to hide behind or say, ‘No, I worked so hard for this! You guys shouldn’t say that! That hurts my feelings’. I don’t care – I really don’t.” Violet Grohl has faced the accusations for years, and she doesn’t allow it to bother her. She said: “I’ve heard that since I was 13 years old. So call me a nepo baby all you want. It’s ‘whatever’ to me. I just hope that eventually people will give me a shot.” Violet Grohl also appreciates the privileges she enjoys in her life. Violet Thistlewaite Is Not a Villain Anymore by Emily Krempholtz

Violet Thistlewaite Is Not a Villain Anymore by Emily Krempholtz

Emily Krempholtz’s debut novel poses a question that feels both whimsical and deeply serious: can a former villain truly become good? In Violet Thistlewaite Is Not a Villain Anymore, we meet a protagonist who spent most of her life as the Thornwitch, the feared right-hand enforcer of the dark sorcerer Shadowfade. With her master now dead, Violet arrives in the quaint mountain town of Dragon’s Rest with a singular goal—to reinvent herself as a kind, normal florist and finally discover who she might have been if circumstances had been different. This isn’t your typical redemption arc where a character simply announces they’ve changed and everyone accepts it. Krempholtz crafts something far more nuanced and emotionally resonant. Violet’s journey toward goodness is messy, uncertain, and filled with the kind of self-doubt that makes her feel startlingly real. She doesn’t just want to stop being evil—she wants to understand what being good even means, and whether someone with her past deserves the gentle life she’s trying to build. The Charm of Dragon’s Rest and Its Residents The …
