Urgent recall issued for popular burger sold by Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose | UK | News

A popular beanburger stocked by major UK supermarkets has been recalled over fears it may be contaminated with plastic. The burger has 4.5 stars on Google and is widely available across leading UK supermarkets including Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, and Ocado. The product which is meant to be frozen contains red kidney beans, cannellini beans and haricot beans with carrots, sweetcorn and peppers all coated in a crispy breadcrumb. But the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued an alert, warning consumers that the product is unsafe to eat. The FSA’s risk statement reads: “This product may contain pieces of plastic, which makes the product unsafe to eat.” The recall applies to Goodlife Spicy Bean Burger packs (454g), with batch codes L6030 and L6031, and a use-by date of July 28 2027. The batch code and use-by date can be found on the end of the product boх. Point-of-sale notices are being displayed in stores to inform customers about the issue and explain the steps to take. Customers can also contact Goodlife directly via its customer …

Waitrose’s new £13.25 rule in all UK stores – started in April | UK | News

Waitrose’s new £13.25 rule in all UK stores – started in April | UK | News

Shop floor staff at Waitrose stores across the UK saw their hourly pay increased this month, in a major boost for the chain’s employees. From April 1, their pay was boosted to at least £13.25 nationwide, with those working within the M25 getting £14.80 per hour. Rates of pay will increase to £14.31 per hour for workers outside the M25 who “gain enhanced skills and take on specialist roles”, increasing to £15.98 for London workers. Waitrose is operated by the employee-owned John Lewis Partnership, and shop-floor staff at its main brand, John Lewis, will also benefit from the pay rate change. The partnership says it represents a £108 million investment in its workforce and a 6.9%-pay increase for shop staff at both chains. The pay increase outstrips the national minimum wage rise and translates to an extra £1,600 per year for a typical full-time Partner, it said. John Lewis Partnership’s chief people officer, Helen Webb, said: “Our partners are the heartbeat of our business. “This £108 million investment is about putting more money into their …

Waitrose slammed after customers hit with £100 parking fines | UK | News

Waitrose slammed after customers hit with £100 parking fines | UK | News

Waitrose has been slammed after customers at its Romsey store were hit by high parking fines, which they claim were introduced without their knowledge. Shoppers have been issued fines of up to £100 after Britannia Parking was introduced back in December. Prior to the introduction of the third-party parking firm, the supermarket on Alma Road offered shoppers up to two hours of free parking. Tickets were produced on entry, stamped at the till, and then shown at the exit barrier. However, with ANPR systems now in operation and external wardens employed, many customers are being hit with hefty fines after ‘overstaying’ their two-hour slot, reports the Daily Echo. Sandra Rowden, who has shopped at the supermarket “for 29 years and spend around £24,000 a year,” said that it is “absolutely diabolical” that people are being targeted by parking wardens. She said: “Waitrose are known for valuing their customers, and it was lovely having a man on the barrier. You felt like you were part of the club, and you certainly didn’t have to worry about …

Iceland offers job to Waitrose worker sacked for tackling shoplifter | UK News

Iceland offers job to Waitrose worker sacked for tackling shoplifter | UK News

The boss of Iceland has offered a job to the man who says he was sacked from Waitrose for tackling a shoplifter. Walker Smith, who had been with the supermarket for 17 years, was dismissed two days after getting into a brief struggle with the thief, who was trying to steal Easter eggs. He told the Guardian he was reprimanded by his manager and apologised, but the issue was escalated, and he lost his job at the shop in Clapham, south London. Posting next to an article on the story on LinkedIn, Lord Richard Walker, executive chairman of Iceland and the government’s cost-of-living champion, posted: “You’re welcome to a job with us. We even share the same name…” It’s not known if Mr Smith has responded to the offer. Image: Walker Smith lost his job at Waitrose. Pic: Facebook Lord Walker also suggested in an interview last week that security guards should carry truncheons and pepper spray to deal with the violence they encounter. The Conservatives have urged Waitrose to reinstate Mr Smith, but the …

Waitrose employee sacked after tackling ‘Easter egg shoplifter’ should be reinstated, Tories say | UK News

Waitrose employee sacked after tackling ‘Easter egg shoplifter’ should be reinstated, Tories say | UK News

A Waitrose employee who said he was sacked after tackling a shoplifter trying to steal a bag of Easter eggs should be reinstated and handed a bonus, according to the Conservatives. Shadow home secretary Chris Philp said the supermarket chain had acted “disgracefully” by dismissing shop assistant Walker Smith, a long-standing employee who had worked at London’s Clapham Junction branch for 17 years. Mr Smith, 54, claims he was sacked two days after confronting a shoplifter who was attempting to steal the chocolate eggs, leading to a brief struggle before the shoplifter fled. The employee told The Guardian that after one of the bunnies broke into pieces he picked up a chunk and threw it towards shopping trolleys in frustration, not aiming it at the shoplifter. Mr Smith said he was told off by his manager and apologised, but the issue was escalated. Waitrose has said that reporting of Mr Smith’s case, based on an interview with the newspaper, does not cover the “full facts of the situation”. Mr Smith told the publication he regretted …

Major food company plunges into liquidation – works with Morrisons and Waitrose | UK | News

Major food company plunges into liquidation – works with Morrisons and Waitrose | UK | News

A major food wholesaler has collapsed after 35 years in business. A total of 71 people have lost their jobs after Enterprise Foods Limited, which traded as Localist, went bust. The East Kilbride-based company helped Scottish suppliers, producers, and farmers get their goods onto the shelves of retailers such as Waitrose, Co-op, Poundland, and Morrisons. The business fell into difficulty after failing to refinance debts of more than £5 million, amid cash-flow problems that had built up over several years. These were linked to bad debts following the failure of numerous customers and were worsened by challenging market conditions in both the retail and hospitality sectors. This has left 250 local suppliers up and down the UK uncertain about how to get products to retailers and receive payment. Localist helps deliver 4,000 products a week to over 2,500 stores and 1,000 catering companies. George Lafferty of BTG was appointed provisional liquidator on Wednesday (March 18) following the business’s petition. Thomas McKay, managing partner of BTG in Scotland and Northern Ireland, said staff are being supported …
